Food Waste Friday-12.5

This week, I wasted some leftover Hibachi Chicken and Shrimp. Normally, it would have gotten eaten, but my husband was working from home last Friday and didn’t eat leftovers for lunch like usual. We did work our way through quite a number of leftovers last weekend, but we just didn’t make it to this bowl.

I also threw away a bag of wheat bran. I bought it a long time ago to use in some recipe I wanted to try, and, well, I never got around to it. It’s rancid now, so I threw it away. I bought it way before I started working on reducing my food waste, though, so I’m not feeling too bad about it. The new, less wasteful Kristen would probably have used it up before it went bad. 😉

What about you? Did you manage to eat up all your post-Thanksgiving leftovers? Link us up!(and remember to enter a direct link to your post about your food waste).

I too am a recovering food waster! I am getting better, but still seem to slip up...I am progressing though.

That is a good idea about a bird table. I always have stuff left over when I am done with a chicken and I would like to put it to some beneficial use instead of into a landfill.

Just found your site. Love it, someone after my own heart. A quick comment on food waste, you may already do this, if it won't go into the compost you may be able to give it to the birds. As you know there are a number of items that you can't put into the compost such as meat, fish, fat etc. We put up a "Bird table" - just a board attached to a tree, or you can attach a board to the top of a post. On that we put all our scraps that birds will eat. After the turkey is finished for example, and I mean really finished, we have removed every scrap of meat and the bones, gristle, skin etc has been boiled for soup or stock we take the remaining solids and put onto the bird table. Also the fish scraps, the 1/2 a hot dog that the grandchild dropped and wouldn't eat. The fat from the top of the stock etc etc - you get the idea. Consequently we always have a plethora of birds to look at, from Crows to LBJ birds (Little Brown Jobs). Keep up the good work I will be checking in to see your site. David.
