Meet Wilson and Sheldon.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I post a picture and just a few words.

Remember Sonia's highly detailed can-we-afford-a-hamster calculations?

Well, their grandparents bought them a hamster cage for Christmas, and gave them some money to spend on a hamster.

So, they ended up buying two hamsters.   😉

(Lisey donated her old hamster cage to the cause, since the two hamsters we bought couldn't room together.)

This is Wilson.

And this is Sheldon.

They're Chinese Dwarf Hamsters, so they're really small and also quite mild-mannered, which makes them perfect for Sonia and Zoe.

Hamsters are more fun when you can take them out and play with them, after all, and these guys are played with multiple times every day.

No shortage of hamster love here.

  1. They are so adorable! My sister and I wanted hamsters so badly when we were kids. One of my dad's co-workers had hamsters who had babies. We adopted all five of the babies. Three were in one habitat for my sister, two were in another for me. We woke up one morning, and my sister's hamsters had been fighting and were all bloody. They were okay, but they had to be separated. That meant we had four hamster habitats! Our poor parents, LOL.

  2. I don't have the hamster lovin' gene but Wilson and Sheldon are pretty cute. Sonia's budget analysis is adorable and great practice for life in general!

  3. Wilson and Sheldon are pretty cute!

My sister had a hamster when we were kids. I would watch him while she cleaned out the cage. The first hamster she had proceeded to crawl up my pants leg and bite me when we tried to get him out. Needless to say after that, I wasn't too crazy about hamsters.

  4. Make sure they're extra careful when they take them out to play - my sister lost her gerbil in the house once! My folks discovered he had made his way into the wall. Let's just say, they had no choice but to send him to the "farm". :/

  5. Aww, I love hamsters and I love their names! I had hamsters growing up and my youngest daughter (now almost 17) had a couple. She's recently acquired a guinea pig and he's so precious. <3 But his cage is way smellier than a hamsters, that's for sure!

    Have fun with them.

      1. My daughter left me with ten guinea pigs to deal with when she went off to college. She had started with two and greatly underestimated their ability to reproduce. Of course, the males had to be kept apart from the females, so that meant quite a few large smelly cages. I solved the problem by allowing my high school students to adopt them after getting a letter of permission from their parent. I made them come back at the end of the day so my principal didn't have to deal with guinea pigs roaming the halls. My slogan was, "Get an A and get a guinea pig!"

  6. We are reading the Adventures of Humphrey books, have you read them? Your girls would probably love them. They are very sweet and about the adventures of a classroom hamster.

  7. They are sooo cute! Pictures of hamsters always make me sad because we went through about half a dozen of them when I was a kid. They kept getting "wet tail" and dying. I'm still teary-eyed thinking about burying little "PeachyKeen" in the backyard. Here's hoping you have better luck with them than I did.

  8. You're not an animal person, if I remember correctly? I think you're a great mom for allowing your kids to have pets anyway, provided they care for them themselves, of course. 🙂 Way to compromise!

    1. I agree! So cool and I hope the girls are having tons of fun with their furry buddies! I'm a dog person myself but those little guys look pretty cute 🙂

  9. I've deprived my poor children of the hamster experience. We are dog people--specifically medium to large hounds. Right now we have a sweet and well-behaved elderly lab/pit/pointer mutt. Small animals might be eaten on sight. So I have a "no rodents, no reptiles" rule.

But lately I've had to expand it to a no otters in the bathtub, no ponies in the backyard, no monkeys, chimps or apes, no panda bears. Sigh!

Curses to FaceBook and cute animal videos.

  10. So sweet! This brings back fond memories of having hamsters growing up. I had one that lived many years until he was truly elderly...poor baby!

  11. Where do I start? Well, last night I dreamed our hamsters escaped.
You may not know this but we too have 2 Chinese Dwarf Hamsters! It's a long story, but we were given the impression that as they were siblings they would live together in harmony. Nope. Hence 2 cages here also. Ours are called Nutty & Nibbles! Both girls.
    Welcome to Wilson and Sheldon!

    1. Oh, that's so funny!

When we first got these guys, we had a cage that was meant for larger animals, and so one of them escaped and made it from the top floor of our house to the bottom floor. =O

  12. We had a couple of teddy bear hamsters. My son's hamster was missing one of his front paws, which we didn't notice until several hours after we got home from the pet store. It freaked me out. I thought we accidentally pinched it in the plastic carrying box. The vet calmed my fears, the mother sometimes will nip and tthat's what likely happened . This hamster ' s name was destiny, Luke. The force was with him.
The other hamster, Fluffy, was an escape artist, and we found her twice in the ductwork. Unfortunately the third time was the end of Fluffy.

  13. Will hamsters sate the pet urge for kids who really want a dog? (Which they are not going to get?) How old do you need to be to care for a hamster?

    1. Um, that I don't know. We are most definitely not not not getting a dog and my kids have always known this, so they've never really pushed for one. They do seem to be quite satisfied with the hamsters!

Zoe can pretty much handle her hamster all by herself and she just turned 9. You put food in, change the bedding every other week, and change water every other day. And of course, she and Sonia play with their hamsters...handling them regularly is important if you want to be able to play with them.
