Food Waste Friday | a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week
Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born. If you're not a blogger but still want some food waste accountability, feel free to participate by leaving a comment.
Well, as far as food waste goes.
There were some happy things about this past week (I spent several days doing birthday stuff, and I got my ebook finished and released), but those happy things are kind of responsible for my food waste.
When I'm busy with other stuff, I really do not stay on top of my fridge and pantry like I should.
I don't even think I have pictures of all the stuff I wasted this week.
I did snap a photo of these biscuits and bread heel, both of which had gotten moldy.
I know I also threw out a really dried-up piece of pizza. And the last several peaches from our orchard trip got mushy and rotten, so I composted those.
I also think I have a few other yucky produce items in my fridge that need to be composted.
Suffice it to say that it was not a zero-waste week around here.
But, it's not every week that I have birthday stuff to do and certainly not every week that I release an ebook, so I'm not going to stress about this overly much. And hopefully next week's report will be much better.
Speaking of the ebook, if you haven't bought your copy yet, you still have a little bit of time to get one with the 50% off discount code. I think e-junkie may operate on Pacific time, so you might even have until noon EST to use the code. So, hurry and buy a copy...$3.99 is a good deal, but $1.99 is an even better deal!
Also, some of you wanted to buy copies for other people as gifts while the $1.99 deal is still going and wondered how. You can change the quantity you're buying once you hit the add to cart button. I'm not sure if you'll then get multiple download emails or what (if you do, you can just forward that on to your recipient). Regardless, you'll have bought legal rights to however many copies you bought, so you can always just forward the PDF to your recipients.
(By the way, I so appreciate you being honest about that instead of just sharing the ebook without buying extra copies. You guys are awesome!)
I will quit blathering on here in a sec, but I just wanted to say that I am so super-duper pleased about the feedback I'm getting from those of you who aren't crafty and who don't know how to sew. I really wanted to make the ideas in this book accessible and do-able, and I'm thrilled that you non-crafty people feel like my ideas are not beyond your reach.

Thanks for having me again on food waste Friday x
Just a few nectarines here. If I had a busy week like yours I'd probably have triple the waste you did, so great job!
It must be a nasty trend for the first week back to school-lots of wasted produce.
Oh.. um, some really old corn that we cooked and didn't eat, some overcooked pasta that we didn't eat, probably some buried produce in the drawer, and lots.of.cat.food.
Our cat has decided she's super picky and will eat 1/3 of a can of food and then be done with that can. We're working on this. (She won't eat dry food anymore, she won't eat the cheap Aldi cat food, etc, and our vet said to feed her whatever she'll eat. Sigh. Picky senior kitty.)
Lots of stuff got wasted this week. I tossed unopened packages of turkey sausage patties, hot dog buns,3 apples that went bad, potatoes that were way too salty, something called chocolate twists(like licorcie ?sp),turkey burger bbq that was shoved to the back of the frig and never eaten and some leftover chicken and penne w/garlic cream sauce. I have not had this much waste in awhile.
I posted on my blog! This is the first week I've had an actual post. My biggest was rice that got buggy. Any ideas on how to rescue it since my kids don't seem to want the extra protein?
I wasted some guacamole and watermelon. Boo!!!!!
I think I just threw away 4 small plums (from the farmers market :O ) but other than that, I think I did pretty well. I stopped cooking for a few days when I saw leftovers still lurking in the fridge, I think it helped this week.
It seems like every week is like that for me. But I've found it's really hard to control your waste when you work outside the home full-time.
Kristen, I think the release of your book in exchange for some food waste is a great tradeoff!
Thanks for the info about gifting. I'm sure I'll think of more people who would love the book as the holidays approach, and come back to buy more!
I don't think that's a bad week at all for you, considering everything...just purchased your book (and yes e-junkie DOES operate on PST!), so I'll be looking into it soon! 🙂
One sausage so far--guess I need to start dating containers so I know how old meats are. But, like Kristen, I think there is some lurking produce I have scoped out yet.
Don't be so hard on yourself Kristen you usually do so well.
Was pancakes in our house tonight to use up some eggs, added a little syrup and ice-cream....well it was the kids first week back at school they deserved a treat.
🙂
I cooked some beets before they went bad. It bad but I try to eat all my food when I know it is going to waste. This is funny and bad. lol
Just a couple of peeled bananas that got fuzzies on them from being set on the floor, and part of a pita. Not too shabby!
Kristen, I'm sure you'll do better next week- you had your hands full this week!
Fuzzy bananas freeze well to be made into banana bread.
We composted some yucky noodles cooked by a teenager who cooked too many. A cucumber froze in my fridge. Too mushy for anything except composting. Good luck to all of us next week.
Sorry. I did not waste a thing. I liked your clothing post too. I am the same way. You can use old clothes as rags, for clean up,as paper towel, as toilet paper and as menstrual products too I am told. You can make them into new clothes too. Wow. Jean purses are fun too.
It seems that back to school has been a busy time for everyone with attention focused other places than the refrigerator. We are doing pretty well here, but my family jokes, "Oh,no. It's Thursday. What is she going to make us eat?"
Goodness. You've wasted so little over the past weeks (and reminded me not to, either), that I think you're allowed some slack. No worries about this tiny amount of food, compared to all the stuff you've used wisely!
