Food Waste Friday | I'm so late!

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born. If you're not a blogger but still want some food waste accountability, feel free to participate by leaving a comment.

Partly because my camera battery was dead, and partly because my children broke a percussion shaker and got all the little beads stuck in my piano keys, so I had to take it apart and clean out all the keys.

Never a dull moment, I say!

So, here's my late waste. I forgot about this half of a bread heel and it got moldy. And I have no idea why in the world I sliced this avocado, stuck it into the fridge unwrapped, and left it for a week.

Sometimes, I'm really not that brilliant.

  1. Oh, it was not a good week - er, two weeks - in my fridge. It made me a little navel-gazey, to be honest.

Maybe you were waiting for the avocado to sprout...

  2. Eh, I do stuff like that all the time. You certainly did better than me! On a happier note, I did plug a couple of your baking posts today, so you're welcome! 😉

  3. Aww,poor avocado.
We sad food waste this week was a whole package of pita bread that got shoved back and buried.

  4. Back after a 3-week break! Oh, dear...lots to report...nearly an entire package of string cheese, half-and-half, watermelon (LOTS of watermelon), a cucumber, lettuce, applesauce...that's all I can come up with right now but I know there's more. Now I'm back from vacation & back on the wagon! 🙂

    1. I completely forgot stuff....geez. We also wasted romaine lettuce(it had been there awhile) and chicken. I hate wasting meat I really do.

  5. Oh my, that avocado makes me sad. Just because I love avocados so.

Today I'm mourning the loss of a cucumber. At least it was free from my garden, but it still makes me sad nonetheless. At least I'm going to get to eat som e Chicago deep dish pizza for dinner tonight, that cheers me up a bit.

    Happy (sort of) Friday.

  6. I have a decent-sized tub of zesty cilantro hummus that I can't eat. It tastes... well.. lets just say it doesn't taste like something I would eat. Any ideas for what I can do with it!?? The future hubs bought a three-flavored tub of hummus and this is the bottom layer. Maybe a spread on sandwiches???

    1. Make a layered sandwich - so take a big boule or loaf of bread (the good stuff), put this hummus on the bottom, then spinach, then cheese, then ... roasted red peppers, then cucumbers, then sprouts, then hard boiled egg, then tomatoes, etc. It's a Dagwood sandwich. Let sit overnight. Slice and eat. Very good picnic food.

  7. I haven't cleaned out my fridge in three weeks. I'm terrified of what I'm going to find when I finally get around to doing it.

On a related note, does anyone know how long egg salad lasts? I made some on Saturday and it doesn't smell, but I'm wondering if I can still safely eat it. I only have one serving left.

      1. They did have it! And egg salad goes bad in 3-5 days. Guess it's going in the trash...

        Thanks for the suggestion!

    1. This one was a little egg-shaped thing filled with tiny beads...you shake it rhythmically to play along with music.

  8. I would be so happy if the only thing I wasted was a slice of bread and an avocado! 🙂 Although I do love avocado, so that would be unfortunate.

  9. This week: A zucchini (inherited from the neighbors when they left town), and the last of a bunch of the dreaded cilantro. My husband will be out of town for the next two weeks, so success or failure will be entirely up to me! While he's gone I'm going to try an experiment and pack up all the plastic containers and try using only glass to store things. Not only will it be healhtier, but I'm hoping the extra visibility will keep me from wasting.

  10. Wasted cucumbers 🙁 Like another commentor, mine were free from my garden; but still there was a lot of care that went into growing them! I was hoping to make pickles, but they haven't produced enough for that and I don't know how to keep them (Or if I can keep them) until I have enough to make 7 pounds

  11. I did not waste a thing. I do have a case of frugal burnout today. My friend keeps trying to turn me evil by getting me to shop at Macy's for things I do not need or cannot afford. Please pray for me. Family first.
