Food Waste Friday | I did better than I expected!

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. I started doing this in March of 2008 to help motivate myself to use up my food instead of wasting it and it's been very effective. Since it helped me so much, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.

So, last week I was a little worried about how I was going to do with food waste this week, as I had a lot of leftovers and perishable food in my fridge.

Happily, I was able to deal with all of it, and I have no waste to report this week! We ate leftovers and froze some food to use later, so this post is fabulously picture-less. 🙂

And because I did so little shopping this past week, we've managed to eat through a lot of food in our fridge and cabinets, which makes me happy. There's nothing like a week of minimalist grocery shopping to make us eat the odds and ends that are hanging around our house!

  1. Kristen, have really been on a roll lately. Great Job!!
I thought I had done worse but when I went to take a look I only found a small piece of a beef roast with some leftover gravy. This normally would have been eaten with no problem except we have been ravaged by the stomach flu this week and not much of anything was getting eaten. I will have several meals from this week that can be pushed to next week so my grocery shopping should be minimal. Have a great weekend everyone!

  2. Wow Kristen, Like Erin says, you are doing brilliantly at the moment! I'd love you to pop over and give your diagnosis on this yogurt I threw away - what do you think went wrong with it??

Hope you are all feeling better now, Erin 🙂

  3. I skipped last week, so today I posted for two weeks. This week ended up much better than I had expected.

  4. This is my first time participating in Food Waste Friday - what a great idea! I've already linked up my blog post. I'm also going to share a tip for minimizing food waste each week, so make sure to stop by and check it out 🙂 This week's tip is about storing green onions.

  5. You're inspiring! I agree with the "eating odds and ends" bit =o). This was our week to "eat down" the fridge and pantry.

  6. Good job, Kristin!

Another No-Food Waste Friday for us as well. I wasn't sure we could pull it off with our oldest daughter (and biggest eater) gone, but everyone pulled together and ate everything up. Our cupboards are pretty bare this morning, but it's shopping day so I'll be looking for places to put everything in a short while.

  7. Great Job Kristin!

I wasn't so lucky. This is my first time participating and I had one thing that we wasted. I'm thinking that's pretty good though!

  8. Congratulations Kristen! We had some cooked beets that I couldn't manage to get to before vacation (after eating them several meals straight for a couple of days), and the remains of a failed dinner: Vegetable Shepherd's Pie. It was my attempt to use up some turnips, but I would have been better off giving them away or throwing them in the compost pile!

  9. I didn't have a perfect week, but I was pretty close.

I really love participating in FWF. Not only does it help me cut down on food waste, but some of my readers pay attention to their waste now and are trying to cut down also. It's nice to see this spreading around and around.

  10. If the week is Fri to Fri, than nothing here, too. But Sat am I threw out a dried out half a plum and a dried out half a hard boiled egg, and two pieces of fruit are getting moldy so someone'd better eat them quick.

  11. THis is a great idea! I definitely need some additional motivation. We've been mostly doing better but I did clean out the fridge last week and had let some things go to waste 🙁
