Food Waste Friday-1.16

Don't hate me, but, um, I wasted nothing again this week. Lest you be bored to tears by a pictureless post, I thought I'd give you a bit of a tour through my day. This was one of those happy days where I didn't have to go much of anywhere(I did have to make a quick trip to the bank, but that was it). So, I had a little more disposable time today than usual. This isn't everything I did today(I also did school with the kids, practiced for church, washed and hung a load of laundry, cooked dinner, and so on)....this is just the stuff I took pictures of! 😉

After breakfast, I mixed up two loaves of banana bread. I'd found myself with a glut of bananas and they were going past ripe faster than we could eat them. The banana bread recipe called for yogurt, and I used some that Sonia had left in her bowl the day before(I figure any germs in the yogurt got killed during the baking!)

While that was baking, I cut Joshua's hair. Upon seeing this, Sonia asked for a haircut too, and I acquiesced.

We ate a loaf of banana bread for lunch, and after lunch, I cut up a bunch of apples to make applesauce(the kids get a free apple each week at Weis, and sometimes we can't keep up with the apply supply!).

Happily, I got three quarts of applesauce, and I still have plenty of apples in the fridge for eating. Half of the applesauce is going into the freezer to use at a later date, and the other half will go with one of our dinners next week.

I cooked most of the apple peels and cores down and squeezed out the juice(I was experimenting with an apple jelly recipe I found online), but Zoe managed to grab a few before I did that.

And lastly, I had two zucchini in the fridge that weren't going to last much longer, so I made a loaf of zucchini bread.

That was much more exciting than a post without pictures, wasn't it?? 😉

  1. I finally got a chance to do the monkey bread today. It came out great. Thanks for posting the recipe.

BTW-When my bananas get too ripe to eat fresh, I peel them, slice them, put them in plastic bags and freeze them. When you eat them, they taste kind of like ice cream. I do the banana bread too every once in a while.

  2. I'm still kind of appalled at my food waste but I am working on it. I haven't tossed anything this week but next week is grocery day so I wouldn't until then. My sweet toddlers are in a huge food waste cycle right now. How do you combat this??? One day they love it and the next it ends up on the floor.
