I missed it the first time

On Tuesdays, I post a picture and just a few words.

At my girls’ dance class, there are two weeks per year when we get to sit in on the class and watch them dance. I use these opportunities to take photos, of course. 😉 Sadly, I missed the first one this year because we were out of town, but I was able to make it to the second one. Phew.

Kristen, that is a nice picture. I hate you missed a special moment. You are similar to me with pictures. My family hate to see me with a camera.

One of my favorite memories of my dad (who passed away when I was 16) was when he would come on the parent observation days at dance. He would be so excited to see us dance that he would keep opening the door before they were ready. One time I was so embarrassed that he had opened it 4 or 5 times and my dance teacher came over and whispered "some kids would love to have a parent so excited to see them dance". After that I let him open it as much as he wanted :)

I really like your composition here! The choice of B&W is nice. The DOF is good, too -- not a fan when it's extremely shallow.

The only unfortunate part is the "scaffolding" (not knowing what to call it) in the pic. As someone whose main photography endeavors are live/non-studio/non-controlled-environment, I understand you have to take the environment as you get it.

I had to go back and look at the photo to see what you were referencing! Those are actually the bars that they use for their bar work in ballet class. So, while they're a little distracting, they do at least go with the theme of the photo.

The room where they take ballet is dark and somewhat dated, and this was a cloudy day too, so I only had the overhead fluorescent lights to work with. It's a very challenging place to take photos! I've seen some ballet studios that are super-duper photogenic, but this is not one of 'em. But it's a good, stretching experience for me, right?

Simple innocent understated beauty. That is the thought I have about this picture
