Kiwis, by Lisey, Sonia, and Zoe.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I post a picture and just a few words.

Lisey's history book touched on New Zealand recently, and the book suggested that she make a little kiwi bird out of kiwifruits.

I'm not sure exactly how valuable this project is from an educational standpoint, but Lisey is always up for making cute things, so I bought her some kiwifruits.

The photo in the book wasn't all that cute, but my creative girls had no problem improving on the original. 😉   And they were very anxious for me to share the photos of their birds with you.

So, here you go!

The birds even have strawberry backpacks and handbags, which crack me up.

(Please ignore the fact that birds would have a hard time wearing a backpack or carrying a bag.)

  1. Did you happen to see the story several weeks about a green woodpecker being attacked by a weasel in England? The pictures were pretty amazing; the weasel seemed to be riding on the bird (sort of like a live backpack!). Here's the photographer's story:

(I'm trying html code to make the link clickable. I'm sorry if it doesn't work.)

  2. These are wonderful. Since I have a monthly potluck, I have taken to doing the animal things with fruit. This might just have to go in my repertoire. Congrats to the artists!

  3. As a fellow Kiwi now living in NY, it warms my heart to see NZ mentioned. As you can probably imagine, I'm the only Kiwi for miles and miles.

Their craft is super cute :):)

It's funny the regional English differences; we refer to the fruit as Kiwifruit and the bird is just a Kiwi. The opposite to what I see here....lol.

    Lovely post, keep them coming!!!

    1. Hi Shannon, where in NY are you? Our family lives across the Hudson from NYC in NJ, and would happily meet up with some Kiwis. We're from Christchurch and have been here about a year. 🙂

      1. My goodness, I completely missed that you guys are back in the U.S. again! A belated welcome to you. 🙂

  4. So, so cute.
Please tell your girls how much we all love the birds [and all their accessories], and thank them for me, because they cheered me up on a dark and dreary day.

  5. I hope they got to eat the kiwis, too. I don't eat cereal anymore but I especially loved kiwi slices on my morning cereal.

  6. Did the lesson cover that the fruit originally came from China, and was called the Chinese Gooseberry till the NZ'ers rebranded it?

  7. Kiwi reader here 🙂 (NZers are also known as Kiwis to make things more confusing!) What a cool idea to make Kiwi bird out of kiwifruit! Too cute to eat!

  8. Tell your girls they did a fabulous job--how fun! I think that creativity is very educational. It increases problem-solving skills and thinking outside of the box. Plus, a creative activity will reinforce the lesson you were teaching. 🙂

  9. As yet another Kiwi reader/homeschooler living in the US I would like to tell your girls that their kiwifruit kiwis are adorable. My children got to see real Kiwi recently... The Memphis, TN zoo has some!
And I too have struggled with the naming of kiwifruit as "kiwi". Kiwi are the birds or the people. I gave up trying to explain that it is the equivalent of calling a strawberry a straw, or a grapefruit a grape!!😉

  10. Kristen, those little kiwifruits are adorable! My kids love them, but we prefer the golden variety, which I haven't seen here yet. They're not quite so tart as the green ones, and their skins are less fuzzy.
