Food Waste Friday | I wasted...

space
...nothing.
Which is usually what happens after an abysmal food waste week. I emptied out my fridge so thoroughly last week, the food waste possibilities were quite slim.
I thought I was going to waste some half and half, but I used some to make hamburger buns yesterday (you can throw almost any dairy product into yeast bread dough!) and then I froze the rest of it to use in the future.
I also managed to save some cilantro by making a pesto with it (sort of like I do when I make my Chicken Tacos), which I slathered onto some chicken that was headed for the grill.
So, since I have no food waste photo, hows about some pictures of my biking companions instead? They're cuter than rotten food.
Just so you know, Zoe does sit down on her bike sometimes (well, most of the time, actually. Just not for pictures, apparently.)
Oh, and Lisey and I DID bake, but we didn't get a post put together yet. Hopefully by tomorrow!

Joshua's 365 post: I Caught A Baby Bumblebee

Finally I had no food waste. I am sooooo happy! Here in Minnesota the weather has been wonderful too,my daughter got her bike out yesterday so I think spring is finally here yeah.
No food here either YAY!! Yes the weather has been beautiful here on the Eastern Shore in Maryland, I love it, we were outside all afternoon, just sitting out there and enjoying the sun.
I had some Waldorf Salad that I didn't like so well that was wasted. And yes, we have been loving the great weather also.
Much prefer the biking photos than waste ones!
Anyhow...I'm back - anyone miss me - of course not...Jo who?;-)
Funny old week (long story no time) so apart from a few emergency purchases I had very little food stock this week so it wasn't going to be a horror story, and we were away last so had used up lots then also. My fridge this Friday is sparkly and clean! My no-meat diet's going okay (although the parmasean crusted chicken recipe really didn't help - thanks Kristen ;-)). Veg Chilli tonight for us - No Waste Tastes Great! Oh and R-Patz for dessert (I wish...). Breaking Dawn was released this week, so bottoms are hitting the sofa tonight for some escapism. Just what the doctor ordered. Have a great weekend y'all.
Way to go on not having any waste to report this week! I'm gonna get there, one of these days 🙂
We can't believe the beautiful weather we're having either. The skeptical side of me keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop (about a foot of snow *grin*) but until then, I'm determined to enjoy the balmy weather 🙂
Have a great weekend!
Me too! And I wasn't even expecting it! Looks like there are already several no-waste posts up, so hooray everyone!
Wow, lots of people not wasting! Sadly I threw out a lot this week, I didn't blog about it though. I'm hoping to start on a clean slate this week and not waste anything!
Congratulations! I managed to get away with only half a tin of condensed milk. Will try harder next week. Great blog.
Happily, the messed up bread I made this week can be made into other things so truly we didn't waste any food this week. However, I need to get cooking again. My dh made a comment about my not being into cooking recently, and it's only a matter of time before I hear one of the kids say there's nothing to eat.
Hmmm....the link to your 365 post didn't work.
I think the only food waste this week was about a 1/2 cup of pasta sauce. Was going to add it to the homemade pasta sauce I was making, but it just didn't look good. But do have some lo-mein noodles that we didn't like that I still haven't used up yet. Just pulled some banana bread from the oven in which I am used some overripe bananas. My son requested it a few weeks ago, so when the grocery store had good looking bananas, I had to buy some extra. 🙂 And I need to be careful, as red sweet pepper was $.99 a pound this week at the grocery store, so I bought extra. Need to make sure I use it and not waste. Did toss a grape or two, but somehow there is always a couple in every bag of grapes that you have to toss.
I get upset with myself for all the fresh veggies that end up going bad to, but I'm happy to say I cleared out the fridge last night of everything that was going to go bad!
I had asparagus and broccoli, a little bit of milk, and about a cup of yogurt. I typed all the ingredients into the allrecipes.com ingredient search, and it came up with cream of asparagus soup... which was the most amazing soup I have ever made in my entire life! It made me so proud since I don't really know how to cook! 🙂
Soup is an excellent way to use up bits. So are omelets, btw. A key to a non-weepy veggie omelet is to make sure the cooked veggies are cool before adding them to the hot pan.
The biking pictures are definitely much cuter than food waste. Great job on no food waste. Your outdoor pictures look much prettier than mine. The pollen is so heavy here right now.
I wasted a Pediasure and corn tortillas this week.
No food waste here either on account of this being my first major shopping trip in 4 weeks. I started putting my cilantro in a vase of water and it is working like a charm so far. Can't remember if you do that or not. 🙂
I wasted the last couple of tablespoons of cilantro, and 1/4 cup of homemade chuteny that got moldy. Both pushed to the back of the fridge danger zone and forgotten! Have to patrol that area better.
Good job on no waste. I had quite a bit this week, ggrrr. I think all of it was discovered last Monday so I got off to rocky start.
I was so close to no waste this week, but had (or was urged) to throw out a few things.
It's our second week and we had a small amount of food waste due to me forgetting I didn't eat my entire lunch. It sat in my lunch bag on the counter all night and wasn't discovered until the next morning. Darn it!
Good job everyone who didn't have any food waste this week!
I had a lot of waste here this week, due mostly to not being mindful of what needed to be eaten, or forgetting to put away dinner. I forgot to mention in my blog post that I did salvage two on-the-brink bananas by slicing them up and dehydrating them. My new favorite "dessert" is banana chips- they are so yummy!
I have a silly question. I understand and would like to participate in Food Waste Friday (as soon as I procure a working camera) but one thing is unclear. On Friday, do you just take some time to poke around in the fridge and cupboards to find out what is ready to go? Or is it more like anytime you may have to throw something away you snap a photo and wait till Friday to post it?
On a side note, when did your kiddos show an interest in learning to ride a bike/any pedal-pushing toy? My almost 4 year old REFUSES to learn (despite begging for a bike for his 3rd b-day that he now wants to sell because he's sat on it all of once). Thanks 🙂
When all of his best friends are riding around on their bike probably. My son was a bit afraid of riding a bike and I tried to get him to attempt it and teach him, but in the end he learned from his friends grandmother, if I remember right. They had a flat court and well, the motivation from my son was there when it wasn't when my husband and I tried. Don't let him give away/sale his bike. I bet by the time he is 6 he will be bike riding.
Having older siblings riding has definitely helped. All of my kids have been on the older end of the spectrum when it comes to riding bikes, though...Sonia only just got rid of her training wheels and she's 8!
Wasted 3 ears of corn that i was so excited to buy and then, two weeks later, still had not eaten and they were slimy.
I finally made a list instead of relying on memory. Based on one data point, I remember waste that's my fault but not always waste that just happens.
My fault:
- most of a sweet red pepper (left forgotten on my desk overnight)
- about 3 oz spinach (the bag was larger than I could eat before it started to slime)
Not my fault:
- about 1/4 onion, because it went bad 3 layers below the surface
- hamburger bun and french fries from a doggie bag (who wants leftover french fries? ick)
Triumph:
- making dried orange peel
In danger:
- half a bunch of kale
Though I love the kale - I let it get nasty FAR too often.
I successfully resuscitated french fries from a togo bag this week - but it did take firing up the oven - I spread them out on a cookie sheet and baked them for a while, tossing them around now and then. Yup - they crisped up again, and were very very happy.
I did a big refrigerator clean-out and will not be specifying most of the ickyness that went in the trash. The biggest baddie was a batch of brown rice noodles in peanut sauce. I guess it really isn't true that I'll eat ANYTHING draped in peanut sauce, 'cause these noodles were borderline when I made them, and got worse as leftovers. No, they didn't behave like wheat noodles. So they're out of my cupboard, which is great - but I could have put them straight in the trash and had the lovely peanut sauce on real noodles or rice. Sigh.
Fresh start on food waste this week.
No waste this week for us. Thought we might but we just eeked out getting our leftovers eaten.
The weather up here in Michigan has been unbelievably warm for the beginning of March. It made my heart smile this week seeing all the little kids outside riding their bikes and brought back great memories of being a little kid and my dad bringing down our bikes from the garage attic when spring started.
