Food Waste Friday-Last one for June!
Happily, I had nothing to take a picture of today...no waste for me. 🙂 That's probably only because I didn't buy any cilantro last week. Ahem.
I did buy some this week, though, and I am determined not to waste it. It only cost me $.33 (actually it was free because it rang up at the wrong price!), but I'd still like to avoid wasting it.

How did you do this week? If you blogged about your food waste, leave a link to that post in the Mister Linky Widget below! Doing so will get you a spot on my blogroll for the next week, so come join us! You'll get a little publicity, and participating in this challenge will save you money and reduce your trash output. It's good all around. 😉

you could try freezing your cilantro so what you don't use doesn't go bad or you could plant some in a little pot so it keeps itself fresh and ready to use as you need it 🙂
If you have extra cilantro, cut it up and put it in your salad - very yummy 🙂
Every since I have been reading your posts about food waste I have been paying more attention to my own food waste - I seem to have little things, like green onions that were hidden under the carrots, or the last bit of something that none of the kids took because they didn't want to be the one who finished it for who knows what reason?!
To freeze cilantro, rinse it, cut the leaves off the stalk, and put them on a baking sheet in a single layer in the freezer. When the leaves are frozen, put them into a container and put back in the freezer. Cilantro isn't good as a garnish after it is frozen (not as pretty), but it is good in recipes where it is mixed with other ingredients. You can use it a little at a time from the container. Hope this will help!
Just a little waste this week- pantry items that the moths had gotten to. Once again, less is more. Too much food is the enemy when you're trying not to waste.
So close to zero waste for me! Some sour cream that had turned green 🙁
@Christine @ becomingp31 when I was growing up we wouldn't finish things because we didn't want to wash the container :S (or get a new bag of milk, or recycle the carton, etc. lazy!)
Zoe - that is probably what is happening!!!
Well, this is my first week posting and I did fairly well. Lost about a half gallon of milk 🙁 but made vegetable broth with all of my veggi scraps 🙂
Great job! I had to add grapes to the compost pile. Fortunately, I found some great recipes to use up my old bananas.
You really need to grow your own cilantro, because you use it frequently, but not in large amounts. Or get a guinea pig to eat up the leftovers, they love cilantro. They also love leftover parsley, brocoli stems, lettuce ribs, carrot tops...
Well done Kristen - what a great result. We have one banana; you have to visit the site just to see the photo of it LOL!
Well, I went out to the garden today and was confronted by LOADS of kale. Does anyone have any suggestion for what to do with it so that I am not including pictures of kale in my next food waste Friday? Here is a link to my blog about it: http://copingwithfrugality.blogspot.com/2009/06/kale.html
I had to throw out (well, compost)half a loaf of whole wheat bread. I don't buy it that often, my son eats a grilled cheese once a week or so, and a few Nutella sandwiches (chocolate hazelnut heavenly spread I developed a taste for in the Old Country) so I usually keep the loaf in the freezer. I forgot it and it stayed in the pantry too long. Luckily, the piece I pulled out had a huge and very visible spot of mold on it, so I saw it right away. Otherwise, my son would accuse me of trying to kill him. 🙂
I should make my own bread, but I have laziness issues. Also, it's too hot. I did make your oatmeal quick bread (baked in a cake pan) last week and it was so yummy. That's definitely going in to the repertoire, thanks for sharing the recipe. And I (crazy mostly vegan anti-egg lady) used Ener-G egg replacer and it worked great!
I need help avoiding food waste this week. Trying to figure out what to do with half a burger, half a bratwurst, some oven fries, and two cobs of corn. See my post for more details: http://copingwithfrugality.blogspot.com/2009/07/preventing-food-waste.html
Thanks! 🙂
