Food Waste Friday | I'm good...

...at least, I am for the moment! I do have an alarming number of leftovers in my fridge at the moment, though, so we'll see what next week holds.
That was super short, so I'll add that you have until Monday to enter to win a $50 Visa gift card on my review page...all you have to do is leave a comment on my latest post. 🙂

Today's 365 post: Deliciousness

I threw away a very sad cucumber this morning.
Too much waste for my comfort:
* The homegrown cuke I sliced for work got left on my desk over the weekend, now it's slimy cuke soup.
* A watermelon from my usual store went bad in a week before I cut it. It's not supposed to go bad that fast. I shall be asking for a refund.
* One of two happy bratwurst that weren't to my taste (I bought them because the guy's breakfast sausage was good)
* One of the six clementines I rescued from a work picnic was too sour to eat.
* Usual bits of plate waste; I don't insist I be perfect on this count.
As I look over this list I realize that only one thing is defined as waste (Kristen graciously agreed that uneated garden produce isn't "waste" in the same way that store-bought is) or is my fault. Maybe the week wasn't so bad after all.
Half a tomato (home-grown and a gift which makes it worse than something I bought!), an uncooked chicken breast, and some chuck steak cooked with peppers, onions and Mexican seasonings. Not good. We almost never throw away meat around here. This week has made it clear that if I'm off attending to other things, there will be waste. My husband will drive to the store to buy a frozen pizza, or eat nachos for days on end to avoid cooking a thawed chicken breast. Unbelievable.
I'm sorry to say that I feel your pain, Jenny. We have a similar situation around here. I've learned not to fight it, though. Some things are just not worth fighting about.
We don't really fight about it....I just roll my eyes a lot!
Too much going on--a bad food waste week. We wasted some chicken and potatoes, black beans, part of a challah that got moldy, a 1/2 piece of gefilte fish, and some raw spinach. We'll do better next week.
Not challah! It makes me so sad when yummy bread goes bad.
Today my friend Rebecca from Turned Loose is sharing her experiences with minimizing food waste.
SUCH a bad week here!! I put some frozen chicken and bbq sauce in the crockpot on Tuesday before I left for errands...forgot to turn it on! It was still frozen when I got home, so I was just going to put it in the fridge for Wednesday. I got distracted, and then went to bed, so by morning it was totally no good. Thursday I made some muffins...I started cleaning and lost track of the the time and burnt them BLACK and ended up tossing them. Thursday night I made potato soup in the crockpot, except I didn't put in enough liquid and it was more like potatoes in sauce. Hubs refused to eat it, and (imagine this) it got left out overnight AGAIN as I got preoccupied during kitchen clean up (I'm starting to see a pattern here...) with a fussy baby and was up all the rest of the night with him. That got tossed this morning. I also threw away a cucumber that got lost in the back of the fridge and went limp, as well as some carrots that went slimy. I haven't had a week this bad in ages and hope I never do again!!
Hi Kristen,
I've been enjoying your blog for over a year and have never commented. But I want you to know I appreciate you! Thanks for all the gifts you share through this blog. 🙂
Peace-
K
Aww, thanks for the encouraging words! I'm so glad my blog is blessing you. 🙂
Woohoo!!!! No waste this week. We managed to eat up all the leftovers and fruit that on the verge.
I just found your website/blog and started reading. Love it!
Friday I was re-organizing the kitchen with my two 2 year old "helpers". Apparently I neglected using potatoes last week so I found slimy maggoty mess created from a badly bruised one. Said bruises were inflicted by my daughter who can't seem to not carry them around if she can get her hands on the bag. Sadly half the bag needed to get composted cause I couldn't bring my self to touch them much less rinse them off.
