Eraser Soap

Last year for our botany course, we were supposed to grow some herbs and then use them to make scented glycerin soap.   I was all organized and bought the supplies, but, um, we never did make the soap.

However, the girls found the supplies the other day and decided to make soap with Japanese erasers inside.   😉

We used this YouTube tutorial but really, all it involves is melting the glycerin, adding color and fragrance, and pouring it into the molds.

(Which is cheater soap-making, since you're not actually MAKING the soap base.   But I very much doubt I will ever get around to messing with lye and all that, so this is as close as we'll get to making soap.   😉 )

P.S. This is the glycerin soap base we used, but we bought it at a brick and mortar craft store with a 40% off coupon, which I pulled up on my phone.

P.P.S. In case you didn't know: you can use A.C. Moore, Michael's, and Jo-Ann Fabrics coupons interchangeably at those stores.   So, do print one or pull one up on your phone every time you buy something crafty.

  1. My boys, now 18 and almost 21, "made" this type of soap when they were little. We used little plastic bugs in the soap and we also molded some in our popsicle molds with sticks. They gave them to their cousins for Christmas.

We used the dishwasher door as our table and that way any spills could be washed right away.

  2. What a great idea! These would be perfect for a Secret Santa gift for kids. Don't you just love being able to pull up the coupons on your phone? I stopped the mailers that I got from Jo-Ann's years ago, but now I can still get the deals.

    1. Yes! I used to print them out from the website, but it's way easier to get it up on my phone, and it saves ink and paper too.

  3. Cute soap. I've done soap this way before, too- using glycerin, but not from scratch. I think my daughter is old enough now that she would enjoy doing this together. Thanks for the tip on the craft store coupons. I had no idea. 🙂

  4. AND - some of those stores listed offer discounts to homeschoolers and teachers! As I've 'graduated' from homeschooling, I'm not sure how the verification process works, but it is worth asking. Some of them also give your homeschooling/teacher discount in addition to the coupon discount. Ask first!

  5. Did NOT know about the coupons! That is good to know!
I made my own soap from the lye and fats, a few times. I actually like doing it, but it isn't all that cheap and it takes time, something that is always in short supply. I hope to do it again, soon. Those are cute little soaps, though. I think they'd make great gifts.

  6. These are adorable! I can't wait till my kid is old enough to do crafty things together. I'll be bookmarking this for future reference 🙂
