New Cilantro, Old Cilantro

So, I had a bit of cilantro left in my fridge. It wasn't getting pretty dry and yellow. But not slimy.

And since I bought a nice new bunch of it to use in a batch of Chicken Tacos, I thought it made sense to focus on using up the nice fresh cilantro instead of the old yellowed stuff.

(Incidentally, if you haven't made the chicken tacos yet, you should. Soon.)

Two glass containers of cilantro.

I also had a few more power outage casualties...a bag of cheese went moldy long before it should have, and I discovered mold in a nearly full jar of tomato sauce from my fridge. Apparently it just didn't stay quite cold enough in every part of the fridge while the power was out.

Hopefully that's the last of the storm-induced food waste, though.

  1. Today is the last time I ever photograph cucumber as part of my "No Waste Tastes Great" Friday routine. Ever.
Said in my best Ross from Friends voice "We're on a break!". I'm not buying any more (well for the foreseeable anyway). That'll resolve the problem. No cuke, no cuke-waste.
Glad I've got that off my chest!
p.s - Chicken tacos sound just the ticket - will have to give 'em a go!

  2. It's good to know that I'm not the only one claiming the loss of cheese from the power outage! Also, now I'm hungry for chicken tacos.

  3. It's always a good time for your chicken tacos, but I'm trying to stick to my own homegrown cilantro right now. Unfortunately with the crazy heat and weather we've been having, cilantro just refuses to grow.

  4. Did you buy your cilantro or grow your own? I see roots in that vase...I am growing my own cilantro for the first time and am learning. Am I supposed to pull the whole plant up by the roots when I use it? I have just been snipping sprigs off. I have so much I am trying now to freeze it with instructions from the internet. I am not sure how this will work. Have you ever frozen it?

    1. Just snip it off as you need it, because it will keep growing more cilantro until it starts to go to seed. I grew cilantro last year and it was so good! This year for some reason, none of my seeds came up. I think I must've gotten a bad batch or something.

  5. I don't think I've ever *not* wasted cilantro. I've tried all sorts of methods of preserving it and it always ends up in the trash 🙁 I hate having to buy a whole bunch only to use 1/3 of it 🙁

  6. I just had some gross guacamole that we couldn't eat. That's all this week!
I have some fresh basil that's on the verge, but I'm using it up tonight in a pasta bake.

  7. Wow. That's all the old cilantro you have left? Try as I might, I cannot use up a whole bunch of cilantro. (Just 2 of us) Thank goodness compost piles need green stuff.

  8. I made chicken fajitas last night, along with fresh homemade salsa. I did the same thing Monday, so we used up our bunch of cilantro. Cleaned out some other stuff, though!

  9. I have the ends of two bags of salad left from before our recent vacation and they are really slimy now. I also had to cut some mold off my block of cheese this morning, but the rest of the cheese looks good now.

  10. Had a fairly good week, but then I had somewhat cleaned out the fridge last week, so didn't have as much to use up this week. So doing okay. Do have some homemade barbecue that I have to find a use for. Not quite right to me on a sandwich, but was delicious with some strawberry and marinating some chicken in.
