Regulars

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I post a picture and just a few words.

3 loaves of bread

I don't often make cookies or cakes or bars or pies (Ok, I never make pies!), but three loaves of whole wheat bread emerge from my oven on a very regular basis.

This bread is cheap, delicious, and I've made it so many times, I can practically do it in my sleep.

  1. Looks beautiful! Since we've had to go gluten free, one of the things I miss most is making homemade bread.

  2. What size loaves are they? One pound? Do your loaves sometimes come out different sizes? I am very careful when I measure the amounts in my recipe, but the loaf comes out a slightly different size each time, which I can understand, but occasionally it will only rise about half as much and sometimes it is hanging over the sides of the container! Yet everything, within reason, was the same. The egg might have been a bit bigger or smaller, but everything else would be virtually identical, even the same yeast, which I keep in the 'fridge. It is not a problem, just curious if you have the same experience! (Probably seeing the 3 identical loaves in your picture brought it to my mind. 🙂 I only make one loaf at a time - my family is smaller, just the two of us old timers!

    1. Gosh, I don't know! I haven't weighed one of these yet-I'll have to get my little scale down.

Mine are fairly consistent in size, except when I accidentally let them rise too long. Ha.

  3. I can't wait to try this! I have been buying bread from the farmer's market for a while now ( to the tune of $6.50 a loaf) and the people who make it are taking a break. I tried a loaf of grocery store bread and I just can't eat it anymore. I don't have a stand mixer so I will have to mix it by hand, but it's worth a shot.

  4. I have recently started using your recipe for whole wheat bread and my family just raves over it. I have learned so much from your careful explanation and thorough pictures. I make many of your recipes and they never disappoint. Thank you.

  5. Yesterday I baked bread too! To me nothing says home like a bowl of chicken noodle soup with a slice of fresh bread.

  6. They look yummy!
I tried making your recipe before and I never really got it right. It kept coming out worse and worse each time I tried. But it has been a while so I think I might try again.....

    thanks for the inspiration!

  7. Your pans look the same as mine -- Chicago Metallic. Is that what yours are?

I love the Chicago Metallic loaf pans as they so evenly distribute heat, and last a lifetime. Mine have darkened slightly over the years. I've been baking 5 loaves/week, every week for 16 years with these pans, and I still love them.

    Your bread looks yummy!

      1. Oh, from that angle of the photo they look exactly like the Chicago Metallic Commercial pans. Thanks for letting me know. Have you done a review about this line of pans?

  8. Just out of curiosity, how do you slice your bread? I saw a previous post where you had beautiful even slices. I just started making bread and am trying to slice it with a large serrated knife. It does the trick, but I wish I could get it a little more even. Also, how do you store your bread once you have made it? Thanks!

  9. So awesome! I haven't mastered sandwich bread yet, but I do make spicy garlic bread each week for my husband's breakfast (ok and the rest of us too) It's such a money saver once you get in the habit of making it.
