Oh, Irene.

Though the weather outside at the moment is calm, it won't be that way for long. Irene is supposed to hit us sometime in the next 24 hours, which means that my menu planning and grocery shopping haven't been at all normal.

I did buy a bunch of candles at Goodwill.

But I did not do a big two-week grocery shop. Instead, we've been busily eating down the food in our fridge, and I've been storing up ice.

It's almost guaranteed that our power will go out, so menu planning is sort of pointless. I do plan to utilize our grill to make some dinners while the power is out, though, and we'll be eating cold lunches and breakfasts.

I haven't the faintest idea when our power will go out or come back on, so this blog may be quiet for a number of days. I'll be back as soon as possible, though.

And if I'm feeling very patient, I may try to log on using our Kindle (the web browser on there is pretty clunky) once the storm has passed, just to let you know we're ok.

Also, I know I can get onto Twitter on Mr. FG's phone, so if you're dying to know how we weathered the storm, you can follow me there.

Stay safe, all you fellow east coasters!

edit: The winner of the Scrabble Alphabet Scoops game is One Frugal Girl. Congrats!

  1. We live in OH and who would ever think a hurricane would affect us here but a couple of years ago when one hit Texas the wind storm it eventually created here knocked out our power for a week! It was a long week of living out of our cooler and cooking on the grill for everything. I told my husband by the end of the week that I had enough of being Amish and they better get power back on soon! LOL Stay safe!!!

  2. Hi Kristen,

Stay safe. Living in Fl my whole life I've been through a number of hurricanes. I think the worst part is the howling wind and things banging against the house. You know this, but just to reiterate, make sure anything that could be a missle is secured or brought inside. Stay away from the windows. We used to fill the tub with water (in case the city shut it off) so we could flush.

I have a healthy respect for a hurricane but you know what I am really afraid of of? A blizzard. I don't know how you guys handle that. Especially if the power goes out. I'd be afraid of freezing to death.

Di Zoe see the air swimmer? I thought that they were so cool. Loved the look on the businessman's face when it flew out of the elevator!

    Take care,

    Patti

  3. We survived three hurricanes in one year, and having the power go out was the worst. I hope you have NO power loss, and that Miss Irene is kind to all.

  4. Starting to get windy in Richmond, VA. Most likely loosing power some time this weekend also, but we are ready. Take care!!

  5. I'm up in northern VA, so we're getting ready, too. My hubby thought to pull out our fondue set to cook on in case the power goes out (it uses sterno). Hopefully we won't have to do that, though! Anyway, stay safe and we'll be praying for you along with the rest of the east coasters 🙂

  6. Kristen be safe....

We are getting ready for hit hitting here in central Jersey.... Not really looking forward to this at all...

  7. You'll appreciate this...when I went to the grocery store this morning, there was SO much yellow sticker meat. I was so bummed I couldn't take a chance on stocking the freezer!! I did, however, manage to pick up a few gorgeous steaks for tonight's dinner at a steal!

    1. If you have time you should can the meat (we've done beef and chicken). It looks oh so gross, but is oh so good! and Shelf Stable!

Hope you are safe and sound!

  8. Having been thru hurricanes in CT, category 1, and Florida, category 4, I agree that no electricity is the worst. Not just for at home but it takes out gas stations, banks & ATMs, grocery stores' freezers & coolers, traffic lights and on and on.

Best of luck to you, stay safe.

  9. Stay safe, FG family!

Lots of love and prayers are coming your way from all your blog buddies.

  10. Just make sure you have some canned goods (which I know is not really your thing) and a can opener. I remember cooking canned goods with neighbors on a propane torch, in the driveway, in the dark (except for the light of the moon). The "party" started b/c our neighbor saw us outside and he asked to borrow our can opener (b/c he had can goods but no good way to get into them....you don't realize how useless an electric can opener is until your really need it). I think we were without power for about 3 weeks.

  11. Everyone in the area, including the FG's, are in our thoughts as Irene get's ready to come a calling. Last storm we were out of electricity for 2 and 1/2 weeks. We adults tooks it hard but the kids had a wonderful time with the whole experience. Be ready, be safe and let us know soon you are okay!

  12. Here in NC the storm is going to leave us today. Luckily we have just had rain and wind since we are on the edge of the advisories and state of emergency. We've actually kept power so far. There are many in our area without power at this time but we were one of the lucky ones. Stay safe, sounds like you have a good plan in place. I made bread and granola bars yesterday to have on hand in case our power went out.

  13. We are ready for the storm. I've taken an inventory of what's in the fridge and freezer so I know what we have to use up. It should be an interesting week of meals if the power goes out. We also turned down the temperature in the fridge and freezer to give ourselves some extra cooling time just in case.

Hope you and your family stay safe.

  14. So excited to win the scrabble game! We just lost power from the storm. We lit candles and immediately pulled out the board games.

  15. I'm following you on twitter now, so I'll be watching for a post there if you aren't able to blog. I'll say a prayer for you guys to make it through this storm with ease!

  16. We live near near Smithfield, NC just a couple of miles east of I-95. Irene was an unwelcome visitor having come to visit earlier than we expected. The forecast had her coming in around 6:00 am, but high winds and heavy rain started here around 1:00 am. We have huge limbs down in our yard and on top of the house, but no damage other than a bulb got broken in the flood light out
back. From about 7:00 am to just before 11:00 am our power flickered off and back on repeatedly. Finally, at 10:50 it went off for good and just came back on about 6:00 tonight. We are very happy to see the back side of Irene.
We will be praying that you guys are safe and sound as well.
