Food Waste Friday | Two failures and a triumph

You didn't think we'd skip Food Waste Friday because it's a little ol' shopping day, did you?
No, indeed.
I wasted some cucumber slices.
And some spinach.
So, those are my failures.
My triumph?
I ended up with some leftover gravy (we'd eaten all the chicken), and some leftover broccoli (which made me nervous...I wasn't sure who would eat it!).
But then I realized that gravy is sort of like cream soup, and broccoli is good in cream soup. So, I just combined and heated the two, and voila! Cream of broccoli soup.
It was really quite tasty, and I was delighted I came up with a way to eat two difficult-to-use leftovers.
Sweet.

You need to stop buying cukes...lol. They are your repeat offenders aren't they? 😉 Or turn them into homemade pickles before they start to turn on you. Happy day after Thanksgiving Kristen!
You with cucumbers and me with oranges 🙂
My Friday is very much like your's although mine are 2 'near' failures and 1 triumph so far!
I had a portion of my favourite soup left and some Christmas pud mixture. I was trying to decide whether to eat the soup or not as I made it last Sunday, and just went for it. It's only carrot based - what harm can it do? Obviously the kids haven't had it. The other potential waste is my pud mixture. I followed a new recipe last Sunday for my Christmas puds, and the realisation dawned that I hadn't enough pyrex basins. Boy was there a lot of ingredients - lesson learnt my end not applying common sense. Anyhow disaster averted as two more basins were borrowed, but I still have a smidgen left. I'm going to 'try' to cook the remainder in 4 small ramekins tomorrow - so jury out on definite waste till then!
Broccoli soup rocks - I made it as part of No Waste Tastes Great last Friday for the first time. I added cheese, and it is mighty fine!
Last week, I wasn't sure if I should throw out some coleslaw. This week, I am.
🙂 Was that decision-making by procrastination?
Gravy freezes well.
And then you can more quickly whip up a pot pie, or use it as a soup base, not have to make last-minute gravy the next time you want some, or make a white sauce using the gravy instead of milk.
Your soup looks so yummy! Thanks to your great photo, I am making this soup today and adding some leftover grilled onions and mushrooms. Great thrifty suggestion for today's lunch. Thank you!!!
A bit of leftover heavy cream (passed off to us by a friend) and a few tablespoons of evaporated milk hit the trash. These are holdovers from a couple of weeks ago before I quit eating dairy and I just wasn't motivated to try to use them up in something for my husband.
That's a great post. My family and I have been really conscious about that. We've cut down on the amount of veggies we make at one time, because more often than not, we'd have some that would have to be thrown away. It's working out much better now. We make just enough 🙂 🙂
So far, so good. Although half the fresh cranberries that came in my food co-op box weren't exactly fresh, so I threw out the whole kit-n-kaboodle. But that wasn't my fault. 😉
I had no waste!
I bought mushrooms because they were on sale. That was a bad idea 🙂
Was a bad week here we wasted Spanish rice,
Taco meat, penne and chicken sausage, breakfast potatoes,
A few grapes from Aldi that got lost in the back
Of the frig.
Leftover...gravy. Leftover. Gravy. Like, gravy that you had too much of and could not finish. Leftover.
No, I'm sorry. This simply does not make any sense.
A little late but I've linked up. Better late than never, right? I did better last week. I do have some food to use up this week and see a lot of baking to achieve it...wish me luck 😉
