Food Waste Friday | One Thing

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born. If you're not a blogger but still want some food waste accountability, feel free to participate by leaving a comment.

So, I've only got one thing in my photo this week, but it's a sad thing.

I always hate to waste meat because it's more expensive than most other foods, money-wise and resource-wise and because I don't have the proper composting resources. But waste it I did.

Fortunately, this is mostly chicken thigh meat, which is not the expensive, happy chicken that I bought at the organic market (that store doesn't usually sell thighs).

We have made it through a bunch of produce this week, though, and yesterday at lunch I had a delicious salad made with leftover chicken from Chicken Tacos (if you haven't made those yet, you should! So yummy.), plus chopped tomatoes, chopped avocado, and shredded cheese. Totally tasty.

  1. I keep forgetting to correct my Intentiona to Intentional! 😉 hee hee!
Not a great week for me... but better! Thanks for the motivation!

  2. Just one for me also (well 3 actually as a pack of 3 peppers!) but they can be salvaged as I can slice and freeze and use up on Meat-Free Monday. Since joining in with FWF and starting my own 'No Waste Tastes Great' Challenge in response to your initiative, this is the first week (in months) that the Hubby and I get a takeaway! Hurrah! I was so impressed with myself (give yourself credit - who else does? haha) that I photographed my fridge and posted the picture.

  3. This is a really great idea. I really hate wasting food but it still happens. But this year I have gotten a lot better about it, and I'll whip up a pot of soup or find some new recipe to try just to use things up in our fridge. I've also found that having a fridge which is only a few years old is AWESOME. Food lasts way longer in there than it ever did in our old fridge!

  4. This is my first week doing Food Waste Friday! I am looking forward to becoming more accountable about our waste! I really, really enjoy your blog! I have to tell you, after reading all of your Goodwill shopping posts, I went to a local resale shop and was able to get my 10 year-old 4 pairs of like-new jeans and my 9 month old 2 pairs of jeans and 3 shirts, all for $14!!! I was blown away by the savings, and I'm planning on checking my local Goodwill store soon! thank you so much!

  5. Hi Kristen,

I love this! I used to end up wasting a lot of fresh vegetables every week, so I started buying mostly frozen veggies. This works much better for us since they last so much longer. If I have leftover meats that sit in the refrigerator more than one day, I try to remember to stick them in the freezer too.

One thing that always seems to help me keep food waste to a minimum is to keep my refrigerator half-empty. The easier it is for me to see the leftovers, the more likely I am to use them or freeze them. Once something gets pushed to the back of my refrigerator, forget about it! It's probably gone until it walks out by itself. 🙂

  6. Even with major teething this week we've been pretty good with only two oranges having to be given over to the composter.

Don't you just get so CROSS when meat is wasted? However, sometimes you can only have chicken so many times during the week.

  7. LOL, I like that you call them happy chickens. That's how I try to describe the eggs I buy.

This week (last week? can't remember) I lost a pear to the perils of driving home from the store.

  8. Hi Kristen
I have a whole bunch of cilantro that is about to go bad; do you think I could make the cilantro pesto mix from your chicken taco recipe and then freeze it in an ice cube tray for future use? I'm never quite sure about these things!

    1. Never mind! I found my answer in the comments from the original chicken taco post! I will try freezing it. Thanks a lot, I love your blog!

  9. Just the last third of a lime here this week...better than we've been in a while! we do have lots of veggies lef tthis week since our meal plan got out of whack so it will be a vegetarian weekend.

  10. I LOVE this idea! I hate the money I waste on food that just goes bad as well. This is brilliant and lets you really know how much money you're wasting. I may have to join in next week 🙂

  11. 3 apples and a purple onion that didn't survive this week. Hopefully with going back to my old farmers market things will be better.

  12. I did not waste a thing. I feel bad when I waste anything. I have seen so many desperate starving people that are homeless. We have so much to be grateful for. Enjoy your weekend.

  13. I love your blog. This was my first week of Food Waste Friday, and boy was it a doosy. A huge chunk of eggplant and some bean salad. Maybe I will have some better luck next week.

  14. I had no waste last week, my first week on this adventure. This week, however, I had to toss a chunk of salmon that had gone bad in the freezer. Grrrr...I hate throwing food away. I've gotten very creative in my dinner making!

    1. If you'd waited till you had other waste to throw away the frozen salmon, you'd've had a waste free week! (Sorta.)

  15. I've read your blog for a while and just started one of my own. The first thing I am taking on is my food budget. And "Food Waste Fridays" will soon be a part of my life as well.

  16. I find that I have to shop often for fresh veggies, because if I buy them a couple of days in advance we have way too much waste from the refrigerator killing it. Perhaps I should look into buying a new fridge, this one is pretty old, and has enough going wrong with it to be annoying. I bet that would save us so much in the long run.

I found you on the 6 in 1 hop. Following you now
    Ours+His+Mine=Nine!

  17. This is something I REALLY need to do. My husband has been hounding me for years about the amount of food we throw away.

  18. I LOVE your blog and I think food waste Friday is a great idea. 🙂 I try to prevent wasting food or letting it spoil by strategically planning my weekly menus. I'll make extras of one dish so that I can recycle it into something a bit different the next day. It helps save money, too!
