Food Waste Friday | Fish and French Toast
Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born. If you're not a blogger but still want some food waste accountability, feel free to participate by leaving a comment.
I threw out a fish fillet this week. It was awfully fishy-tasting when I served the fish, and so I knew there was no way I was going to eat it leftover (I have a little bit of a hard time eating leftover fish even when it's really GOOD fish!), so I didn't even bother saving it.
I have no picture of the fish, though.

I also had to get rid of a piece of French Toast that sort of got lost in the fridge for a week.
Or two.
Or three.
Let's just say it's been a while since we had French Toast.
I'll be back with a photo of the French Toast shortly, but I'm going to go ahead and publish this now so that some FWF early birds can link up. 😉

It was an up-and-down week but I did make up a nice recipe for blue cheese bread. Great lunch item. It thinnk that the fridge might actually hide some food in the back just to keep us from being too cocky sometimes 🙂 I 'lost' a bunch of fruit this week.
Some cilantro this week. That bums me out, but I guess I should be happy it wasn't a whole meal or anything.
I *was* up early this morning, but last night didn't get a chance to clean out the fridge because we went out with my brother for dinner instead - a nice spontaneous visit that my lettuce might regret, but I never will.
My post mentions Food Waste Friday, but only in passing, so I don't get to link up today 🙁
I *do* have our first picture of little Bean up though - which today was infinitely more exciting to me than the lettuce I'm embarrassed to talk about...
I honestly don't know how to answer this question. I spent part of the week at a rental house with college friends, part at home. No waste at home because I cleared out the fridge before I left and haven't managed to go shopping since. I don't know how much waste there was at the rental house (I had to leave several days early :-< ) and I wouldn't know how to determine what proportion of that waste should be considered mine.
On a related note, I made Quick Cinnamon Buns from CI for the crowd. And another batch. And another. And was told to leave the recipe so they could be made again. Very very popular and not that difficult to make (it's a biscuit base, not the usual yeast bread base).
Does table waste count towards the overall food waste? I had a lot of that this week. I didn't actually toss anything from the frig or pantry this week.
I actually did better than I thought I would. I was certain there was some dulce de leche in the back of the fridge that was going to leap out and attack me. It's always sad to throw out produce, but at least it can go in the compost, so it's not a total loss!
A very very very disappointing week this week....
I know what you mean about things getting lost in the fridge. I have found a few "treasures" in the fridge off and on too.
The total for this week: A small serving of chicken curry, some cilantro, and some lettuce. Not feeling too bad as the week also included a houseguest, an intensive music workshop, and most of a box of inherited CSA produce from my neighbors. The cilantro is mkaing me crazy --we ate it in curry, homemade salsa, on top of chicken tacos, and in salads and the last bit still got slimy.
I did spend a couple of hours making Italian vegetable soup--used up leftover spaghetti sauce, carrots, greens, cooked white beans, half a zucchini and the last bits of a packet of alphabet pasta, and greens with peanut butter to tame the pile of veg. We still have a LOT of salad greens to eat. But I'm not one to ever turn down free produce!
I'd probably go for the earings.
I include a link on my facebook page to this page and comment with my food waste. People like it! https://www.facebook.com/monique.dicarlo
Mine: few slices of rye bread (we forgot to keep it in the fridge) and one peach (had a visitor).
I wasted 3/4 cup of broccoli dip, a couple of tablespoons of yeast (expired), and a cup or so of strawberries. The strawberries molded in the fridge because I bought way too many fruits that we can consume. I wasted a pear ad a peach and it looks like maybe two of them. I really need to purchase less.
No blog post today; but I did waste almost an entire head of lettuce (definitely buying spinach next time, it lasts soooo much longer!) and...I think that's it! Not bad this week.
Oh, I have some wilting cilantro in the fridge, but am going to try to save what I can out of it.
I would definitely go for the jewelry. Yours looks beautiful.
Sorry but I don't have food waste. The one thing I do to prevent waste is to have a designated pull out shelf, a tray or basket could be used, in the refrig where ALL leftovers or need to use up items go. Hubby and I both look there for food for breakfast and lunch. It does make for interesting meals - my breakfast this AM was 1/2 grapefruit and a couple of ounces of roast beef. Lunch was leftover salad and the pickings from a chicken breast that I didn't finish last night in a soft tortilla and some almost too ripe strawberries (one more day and they would be mushy)
I've heard Bellen's idea somewhere before. I don't use it, but think it's useful.
While I do have stuff go bad once in a while, we eat a lot of fresh produce and homemade cultured foods (kefir, yogurt, sourdough bread, sauerkraut) so what's in the fridge either stays good for a while or will be eaten up within the week.
My problem comes from when I get berries in the food co-op bin and I forget I have a handful left, and with the gosh-awful stone fruits that I love so much but can't find much good in the store and they turn moldy before they are even ripe.
And the occasional lettuce leaf that is all brown and icky, but I'm working on growing all of the greens we eat.
Come to think of it, I could have posted a photo of a few lettuce leaves gone bad the other day...
Wow! They have so much to offer! I've recently lost 30 pounds (still have some to go) and am having to buy some new clothes so maybe some jewelry or a purse would be nice to go with my new improved figure!
I did not waste a thing.
I love the "pirouette" dangle earrings and would love to get them!
I tossed smoked salmon and I felt bad because it was pricey. I always wanted to try it on a bagel so I bought some and I didn't like it. My husband didn't like it either. I figured I could force myself to eat it or I could just chalk it up to lesson learned and not buy it again.
I have a question on how anyone handles "table waste"? Like when you have company over and they only eat half of their plate. My step-mom and sister are all the time coming over and will ask for something, then throw half of it away. It drives me insane! I've tried making comments about not wasting food and they just laugh. We work hard for our money and groceries aren't cheap..it's pains me to see our money basically being thrown away.
You've got me completely into this food waste thing now! It's saving me so much to find ways to use up my food instead of just throwing it away! (Although sometimes we do have to do that, too.) 🙂
