Food Waste Friday |

A bag of wilted spinach.

Even though I've been faithfully eating spinach salads at lunch, I didn't manage to get all of this eaten. Oddly enough, it seemed to go bad almost overnight...I had a lunch salad one day, and the next day, the remaining spinach was inedible.

At least it was only a handful of leaves at the bottom of the bag.

  1. I'm shaking my virtual fist at that spinach for you. Mine - as evidenced by the pictures of the inside of my (uncleaned) fridge this week - is still good, and I too have been eating spinach salad a lot.

  2. Thank for focusing on Food Waste Friday, it really has helped me to shift to a mind set of using it up before it goes bad!

  3. Im starting something new with salads... I love them so, however they almost always go bad.. im having chicken parm tonite and am just goin to run out to the store and buy a bag salad.. easy enough? IF I come out with JUST the salad, right?...

  4. Im not sure why I linked up twice. Sorry. Oh well. Congrats on the minuscule amount of spinach. That is weird how it sometimes goes bad overnight. Have you ever tried growing spinach? It is seriously one of the easiest things to grow and it lasts a lot longer when it only travels from your backyard to fridge. Have a great day!

  5. I have waste this week and it's not salvageable - to make me thoroughly ashamed I have posted a photo of it on my No Waste Tastes Great. The explanation - one minor accident, one emergency trip to the dentist, and now one 6-year-old literally 'drinking her food through a straw'...

      1. Oh thanks so much! we're getting there! she's attempting tiny bits of soft bread this evening!

  6. I had some spices that were probably 10 years old, they just *had* to go. I do have quite a few leftovers sitting in the fridge today, hopefully they don't make an appearance in next weeks FWF.

Great job on helping your friend Elizabeth! Amazing before and after shots. You'll have to check back on my blog on Wednesdays. I started my summertime declutter and am proud to say the kitchen is almost halfway done. I love having neat, organized cabinets!!!

  7. I always had a problem with bagged salad - spinach alone or mixed spring greens made no difference - going bad before finishing. To solve the problem, I line a large pyrex container with a paper towel or two, put the salad in, top with a paper towel, put the lid on and turn the container over several times. Seems to get rid of the excess moisture and the salad doesn't go bad before it's finished. I repeat this every time I use the salad.

I save the paper towels by drying them and then reuse for the next batch of salad greens.

  8. I do the trick with the lettuce in a bowl with the kitchen towel and still sometimes have Kristen's problem. I blame the citrus fruit for providing such a bad example. 🙂

  9. I threw away an entire bag of spinach, unopened! That's really bad. I also tossed a little bit of leftover chicken noodle soup and some carrots that were no longer happy. Thanks again for the decluttering fun! 😀

  10. This week there is no waste. However I cleaned the frig out last friday night and it ended up with a significant amount of waste and forgot to post it. This week was better because we ate up what we had and its now time to visit the farmers market tomorrow.

  11. Boo. I had a couple of bagged salads that I was too lazy to eat, so they got slimy. How does it happen that one may be too lazy to use a pre-made salad, you ask? I don't know, either, but I'm pretty exceptional at it.

  12. We're doing the Walk of Shame this week. One peach, 1/2 a container of grape tomatoes, most of a bunch of kale, one uncooked chicken breast and some coconut chicken soup all hit the compost or trash. Hopefully, this week I can get back on track. Oddly, last week's cilantro was saved by making salsa. At least one thing went right!

  13. How do you get your kids to not waste a ton of their food at mealtimes? I found that's where most of my food waste came from this week.

    1. I give them small portions to begin with, and they don't get seconds of anything until they've eaten what was initially on their plates. We still waste some, of course, but it's not a big problem.

  14. Last week I had an avocado that went bad. But I did not post or take a picture of it. This week I have no food waste to report.
Your spinach salad looked so good that I bought some peppers, cheese and spinach at Aldi to make my own. Yum!! I have been having a "Smorgasbord Day", when we have numerous leftovers. I have been better lately, writing my meal plans for the week and taking a small version with me when shopping and trying really hard to only buy what is on my list.

  15. I've had a LOT of trouble with salad lately. I was buying the precut, prewashed salad in the hopes it would make it super-easy to throw a meal together, but it all keeps going bad BEFORE the "sell by" date! And sometimes at the store I frequent, I can't find any bags that don't expire in the next 2-3 days (not useful when I only shop once a week).

I tried buying hearts of romaine, but even that I was having trouble getting through. I'd plan to have salad for lunches (topped with lots of chicken), and then lunchtime would roll around and my pregnant tummy couldn't handle the thought of salad and wanted CHEESE. And chicken.

So frustrating! I also bought extra salad at my last shopping trip because my mom always wants to eat salad when she's visiting (in town for DS's birthday), and this time, she didn't eat any! Usually she ends up buying her own, then leaving it with us, and we can't manage to get it eaten in time. This time she bought that Ezekiel bread, ate ONE slice, then left us with a loaf of bread that goes bad quickly and none of us want to eat. Yay.

  16. Wheeeeeee! No waste this week! We do have some salad left, but we plan to eat that tonight. Wish me luck for next week!

  17. Hi. Just wanted to suggest that you try removing you spinach from the cellaphane bag asap. And to store it with a paper towel in another bag or container. See if that helps it last longer. 🙂 God bless!

  18. I have not been linking up regularly lately because I have been too embarrassed to even write a post about it. For a meal planner, I'm not doing so great on the food waste--I can plan what to buy but I guess I tend to overbuy (i.e. size of package we need) and really need to work on that. Thanks for hosting this link up--I'm hoping eventually it will get better.

BTW, I find that the bagged salad tends to go bad faster. A few years ago we got a salad spinner and buy a whole head of lettuce instead--cheaper and lasts a lot longer (and tastes better IMO too!) Good job on only having that waste though--at least it is compostable!

    1. I buy my lettuce unbagged, but I haven't found spinach that comes any other way.

I grew some spinach this spring, but now it's a little too hot here for spinach to do well. I plan to plant some more in the fall, though!

  19. This is my first week of blogging my food waste! Thanks for the inspiration, I am hoping this leads to less food waste for my and my husband!
