Especially for Katy | What I really look like when I hang laundry (and bake).

When I put the picture of me in my black $5 Goodwill dress up on Facebook, Katy left me a compliment, and I responded by telling her that of course, I always look like that when I hang laundry and bake bread.

Then it occurred to me that, without meaning to, I've only really posted pictures of myself dressed up. And so, lest you think I float through life wearing spaghetti strap dresses, I'm posting two real-life pictures today (props to Joshua for being my staff photographer).

I usually only wear stuff like this on Sundays.

August 2009

This is much more normal for me.

And so is this.

No knee-high boots in sight. 😉 Just socks and slippers.

So, there you go. Now you can stop imagining me kneading bread dough in a dress and hose.

(I am feeling slightly self-concious at having so many pictures of myself in one post. But, I love it when other bloggers get brave enough to show themselves, so I'm going to hit "publish", despite feeling a little hesitant!)

  1. First off I think you look great in all of these pics! And secondly, I know where you are coming from. Several of my friends think I'm some sort of crunchy stepford wife, but the reality is that on the days when I'm just around the house I throw on comfy clothes and in this cold weather what we lovingly refer to as my sheep.....a Irish knit fishermen's style sweater.

  2. lol! "your sheep". I love it!

And just so you all know, I didn't mean that last little bit as an underhanded way of begging for compliments. I just didn't want you to think I was going all "pre-teen on Facebook" like and posting scads of pictures of myself because I think I'm the center of the universe.

  3. Yeah, spaghetti strap dresses just don't cut it when my house is at 65 degrees. Otherwise, you know, I'd totally be wearing them. Ha.

You can see some of my cold weather three-layer shirt routine in these pics...first, a long tank top to seal out the bottom of my shirts (you know how cold air sneaks up!), then a long sleeved shirt, then a sweater or fleece.

And of course, socks and slippers are a must.

  4. lol, Alicia! So, you and all of the people that know me in real life can ignore this post. Although, people at church who never see me outside of church might think I hang laundry in knee-high boots or heels. 😉

  5. To my surprise I notice the difference between 70F and 68F, even with extra layers; boo. I used to wear fuzzy slippers till my feet became too old/battered to be comfortable. So I had to overcome my sartorial standards to save my feet: now I wear socks and sandals-with-arches. But never in public! Not even if I'm just taking out the garbage to the front curb. Fortunately the compost pile is the back yard, which doesn't count as public.

On another note: the rest of my roomies are away for a few days. I'd forgotten how little food I waste when it's just me. The cilantro, I think, would still be a lost cause though.

  6. You look great in all the pics, but I really love the everyday you pics doing your everyday thing. It's very fitting. Thanks for sharing and great job to the Jr. Photographer.

  7. I tend to look like crap no matter what I wear. Seeing a bald headed bespectacled pudgy (though not overweight anymore) man doesn't sell a website as well as a pretty girl does.

  8. For me? All this time I had pictured you hanging laundry in your old prom dress with the addition of a freecycled feather boa.

What is the world coming to?! 🙂

  9. IF I looked as nce as you I"d post pics of myself everywhere I think! It is hard to believe you're 30! Those pics are great and you still dress better than I do around the house 🙂

  10. I think that it's so neat that you post personal pics of you and your family! It makes it feel like I get to know you better! I love your blog!!

  11. Boy, Joshua is a terrific photographer. 🙂 He's not just taking a photograph, he's composing an image. The difference between the two things isn't something that most people understand until they are much older. He certainly has talent!

  12. Katy, if I had actually gone to a prom, I might wear the dress. But, I have no prom dress to wear while baking. lol

William, I notice a big difference between 65 and 68. But, we gotta do what we gotta do.

Battra, my husband thinks I'm awfully good-looking, but I think he is terribly biased just because he loves me (he often thinks I look gorgeous when any reliable source would disagree!). I don't think my looks are anything spectacular (though, by the same token, I am not terribly obsessed with my flaws either), but that's ok. I'd really prefer that people love me for me, you know? So, stop stressing about your glasses and the balding pate...worry about WHO you are instead of what you look like.

Kristin, I'm actually 31 (and a half, if you're counting! lol). And thank you.

Lindsey, in that photo I was cracking up at Joshua because he was making a funny face while snapping my picture. That's my very unsophisticated, wrinkled-nose, laughing out loud face. lol

Kathleen, I think he's going to be a good photographer. It's interesting to see how much he imitates me when he's taking pictures...he's paying attention and learning!

  13. @mary The thing is, when there are homemade goodies around ALL the time, it's not so tempting to overindulge. If you only get homemade bread once in a blue moon, then you will probably feel like eating 5 slices at a time. But when you know that there will be bread the next day and the next day and the next day, it's much easier to exercise some self-control!

Plus, the vast majority of my baking is bread baking. If I did a lot of cookie/cake/bar kind of baking, I might end up a little larger. lol

And I don't just eat bread...it's a part of my diet, but I also eat oatmeal, yogurt, fruits, vegetables, meats, nuts, beans, and so on (and marshmallow pumpkins!). Mostly, I focus on trying to eat real food, and I try not to eat excessive amounts (kinda like Michael Pollan suggests, although I eat fewer vegetables than he would like!).

I'm also really busy every day...I don't spend a lot of time sitting still, so I think I must burn a decent amount of calories hanging laundry, cleaning, cooking, giving baths, vacuuming, and so on.

  14. As if that wasn't long enough...I should also add that I think that to some degree, my genes have destined me to be a somewhat small person. I don't have particularly large bones, and I'm not especially muscular either.

I suppose that if I ate junk food and sat around all day, I would get larger, but maybe it would take me a bit longer to gain weight than it would take someone with a genetic disposition to be larger. I don't plan to try it out, though! lol I feel good when I eat mostly healthy foods, and I don't have time to sit around!

  15. My wardrobe consists of an array of long, sleeveless dresses worn over different colored long sleeved shirts! I also favor knee socks and handmade moccosins. (I hope I spelled that right!) Seriously, I wear the same thing every day! My mom claims I have some sort of disorder.:P

  16. Hi there - just wanted to say thanks so much for sharing your life through this blog. We live very different lives, but you seem like a really cool lady, and it's very inspiring for me to read your postings. thanks! 🙂
