Droplets
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I post a picture and just a few words.

I think the way butternut squash "sap" appears is kind of neat.
I looked it up this morning and discovered that for some people, the sap is really irritating. You learn something new every day...
(I was making Butternut Squash Soup, in case you were wondering.)

On a food-related note, I've been making a point of buying ugly produce and food with slightly mashed packaging.
Why? Click here to read about it. 😉

Where I live the less than perfect produce is often cheaper (usually at the Asian markets and Aldi, but lately Fuji apples at Safeway as well). I don't care how it looks but I appreciate the lower prices.
I never thought about buying the less than perfect packaged goods, but you make a great point. I'll be on the lookout for them.
KD My thoughts on perfect vegetables, fruits etc are - that if the bugs don't want to eat it, why would I want to eat it?
The "perfect" fruit or vegetable says to me - " I am covered and filled with poisons so that bugs won't eat me, or if they do they will die." Unfortunately just about everything that we buy now is covered with, and full of, poisons and there is not a lot that we can do about it. I do wash stuff, which I hope will remove at least some of it. The only other thing to do is grow your own - which we did for years but unfortunately last year and the year before the Deer and an Otter that lives in The Lake have discovered my garden and eat every little piece of it, with the exception of the weeds!!
I am thinking of putting up a Deer and Otter proof fence but don't fancy the affect on our view as the only place with sun to have the garden is right in front of The Lake.
So what is it to be, no view or poisoned fruit and veg from the supermarket. Hmmm.
I love pics like this. Most people don't even see those little things and I love when people point them out… it forces people to take a different look around them!
Mmmm Butternut Squash Soup, the only thing that is better than Roast Butternut Squash!
I'm one of those people whose skin gets irritated by it. If I peel it, my hands start to peel and the skin gets so tight I feel like it's just slowly peeling off. I wouldn't be able to eat it if my husband didn't peel it!
My daughter and I have the same problem! I can still handle them but get peely. She can not handle at all! Her skin tightens, then peels. She hates it. But we both love them! I have wondered if this could be an indication that we should not eat it. Does anyone have any ideas about this?
From what I read this morning, it's no problem when you cook it...it's kind of like cooking with alcohol.
Could you wear gloves to peel them?
Or if you steam the squash like I do for my soup, you don't actually have to touch the inside of the squash until it's all nicely cooked.
We do that too! (buy the less-than-perfect stuff). My husband is especially good about it!
I didn't think I could love you more! Thanks for giving me something to think about. This is so amazingly simple, it should be easy to implement. Who knows? Making a game of this could eliminate some of the boredom of grocery shopping for a great cause.
I am sorry but I won't buy less than perfect produce. I won't eat less than perfect produce and then it would be wasted. I will say that I am not dissuaded from odd shapes but if a bell pepper is 79cents a piece I will go for the biggest because that's the best value. I agree with fighting food waste but we all have our limits. I might be persuaded to mashed boxes but then I'd worry about the condition of the contents ( ie mashed also) and wonder if I am getting my money's worth.
Oh, if you feel like that, then yes, buying ugly produce is a bad idea! Mr. FG is more that way...he doesn't mind eating the stuff I make because he doesn't have to see the bad spot I cut out of the peach. So if he were in charge of the grocery shopping, I think he'd pick the not-wrinkly jalapeno. 😉
