Want to see some turtles?
If you're one of the ones that use Facebook to keep track of my doings, you know that I tried my hand at making turtle rolls for Sonia's birthday yesterday.
The verdict?
They're cute.

Time-consuming.

But cute.
Joshua loves all herps, but he put in a special request for his favorite type of reptile.
I did take pictures of the process, so next week I'll show you how to make these, in case there's a turtle-obsessed person in your life too. 😉
Also, I did manage to make something that looked sort of like a sea turtle cake.
I looked at an online photo of a sea turtle, hacked up two layers of a not-from-a-box chocolate cake, and slapped lots of buttercream frosting on to hold it all together.
Beautiful cake-making is not one of the skills on my resume (and lack of inspiration to get better at it is what keeps me from investing time in that skill. I'd really just rather bake bread!), but my kids somehow are always thrilled with the sloppy cakes that come out of my kitchen.
Even Joshua, who is acutely aware that a snapping turtle doesn't look quite like this, was sincerely impressed (either that, or he's just getting really good at being polite.).
And Sonia was definitely happy with it, which is what really matters.
We gave her presents too, of course (wrapped in cloth gift bags and reusable boxes).
This picture is blurry, but it's the only one I have right now of what appears to have been her favorite present...a very fuzzy, very soft turtle blanket.
There were more turtle-y presents too...I'm sure that those of you with eagle eyes will spot them in future photos on Joshua's blog or mine. 😉
See you tomorrow for Food Waste Friday!
Today's 365 post: Sometims Mr. FG puts his foot down.

that turtle cake is terrific! i think it looks just like a sea turtle! good job! great detail doing the cross-hatching on the shell!
I think the sea turtle turned out well :). Looks like Sonia had a great birthday ... the turtle blanket looks very cozy.
Great job on the cake.
The cake looks yummy. And Sonia looks so big! Much bigger than even her 6-year-old picture from yesterday.
Those rolls are so cute. We used to make Easter bread and shape it into bears and bunnies like that.
Know what? Even ugly cakes taste good...I should know! I don't bother making them pretty when I can make them yummy! 😉
I really like the rolls. They really turned out nice. The cake is cute too-bet it tasted good not being from a box! Happy birthday to Sonia!
I absolutely love your turtle rolls! They are adorable. I can't imagine how time consuming they must have been, but well worth the effort by the looks of them!
My son looked over my shoulder why I was reading and he said "hey, cool turtle cake, can I have one?". Your kids are lucky they have a momma that is so thoughtful 🙂
It's shabby chic.
My husband was in charge of my son, Elliot's cake a few weeks ago. It featured a motorcycle jumping the roses (grocery store always stick those on) with a crowd of Sour patch kids watching on. It also had a track of M&M's. I posted it on facebook and every time I run into a friend it's the first thing they want to talk to me about. Soooo funny, and Elliot...he loved it! I should submit it to cake wrecks.
btw, He is aware it's hilarious too, so no knocking the dad here.
lovin' all the turtles. And yeah, gotta love homemade cake...though you may see a "sloppy" cake, I see a cake with more outside pieces (more icing on the sides--my favorite!)
You put a lot of love into everything you do for your family!!! I love the rolls and birthday cake and the look on Sonia's face!!! Great Job MrsFG!!!!
I just started following your blog and you inspire me with every post. You are real; you let your kids eat sweets, you don't pretent that your house is always immaculate, you plan but still have flexibility, you throw stuff away, you re-gifting, you don't put fondant on your kids birthday cakes, and you don't waste time cutting coupons. I have always been frugal however, my husband is not. It has been really interesting trying to convince him to curve spending while he tries to get me to loosen my purse strings. After just begining to follow your blog I have already been inspired to make some additonal changes (my hubby is probably shaking his head). After getting married the hubs and I merged two complete households (we both lived alone prior) with the addition of wedding gifts. I had reservations about re-gifting but you do it and it is a great way of being frugal. I also had some christmas gifts from last year that I knew I was not going to use and they were taking up valuable realestate. I took them back without receipts and got store credit. I have been able to use the credit for things we actually NEED like a new car battery. Thanks for creating such an amazing blog!
Those turtles are awesome. My son's fourteen, but I'm baking him a batch this weekend.
You're so creative! I think everything turned out perfectly. 🙂
Great adorable idea. I hope they had lots of fun.
Maybe Sonia ate enough bread and cake to tip the scale at 40 pounds! 🙂
Those turtles are soo cute! My dad and brother routinely call me turtle because of how
slowly I do routine things. It's kind of a mascot now, and whenever my brother travels he brings me a turtle. I'd love it if someone made me some turtle rolls!
