Calico Critter Family Portraits

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I post a picture and just a few words.

I'm doing a grouping of frames on Sonia and Zoe's freshly-painted walls, and just like in Lisey's room, Sonia and Zoe wanted the frames to hold pictures of their favorite things.

Calico Critters were definitely on the list.

I set up their Calico Critters up on a chair by the window with a white board in the background and now we have a family portrait of Sonia's dogs and also one of Zoe's elephants.   The finished pictures look vaguely church-directory-ish, which cracks me up.

I'll show the favorite-things wall to you when I get their room finished (darn odds and ends! I'm almost there!)

  1. I am just beyond impressed with your painting projects. I started a peel-and-repair-and-paint project with my living room walls an embarrassingly long four years ago. We might finish today. More likely tomorrow. And we have still to rehang and rearrange and whatnot following that. Exhausting!

    1. Yep! Although the Calico Critters are always evenly split gender-wise...so my girls' families have two boys and two girls.

  2. My son has been known to take pictures of toys arranged in different scenes (including his sister's Calico Critters) .... does this make us normal, since you have pictures of them, too? I thought it was one of our many oddball traits ...

    1. Totally normal! My girls have done that multiple times, and Joshua used to take pictures of his Bionicles, arranged in fighting stances.

    1. They DO! Do churches even do directories anymore? It seems like those have disappeared in the age of the internet.

      1. Sorry about the late comment, just got in from out of town--yes, our church did a new directory last year. The pictures definitely scream "church directory portraits" and we did not purchase any (we got a free one ... ).

          1. I didn't like cloud backgrounds even when they were popular! No, we are all stiffly arranged in a group in front of a solid blue setting but at least we look sort of OK. I'm always shocked at how expensive the packages are if you choose to purchase them--and amazingly, some people DO buy them. At least the photographers will continue to generate an income ....

          2. Some photographers do awesome studio work these days, but these wonderful photographers never seem to be hired to make church directories. Heh.

I generally prefer outdoor photos so much more, partially because I love a casual, relaxed sort of look for photos.

  3. My favourite way to remove is to send them to church where they are used in numerous ways. Firstly there is a huge storehouse and it is filled with emergency clothing kits, food kits etc. The very best stuff is sold in their shop to raise funds for this ministry. So many things are sent overseas as well. What may not be useful here is useful in poorer places. I am succeeding in collecting heaps of stuff to send again. I hate the thought of things such as gently worn shoes being trashed when someone may truly be thankful to use them.

    1. FYI for those interested. An organization, lovethrushoes.com sends new or "gently worn" shoes to Africa where the shoes are given, not sold and GREATLY appreciated as children need shoes in order to attend school. For many children and women, it is their first pair of shoes.
For info, email liz@lovethrushoes.com. Liz is a very mature college student from GA who travels to Africa, usually alone, to oversee the shoe shipment distribution.

  4. Yes, they do church directories, and they don't look any different!

Photographing their collections is so thoughtful! I wish, how I wish, my folks had photographed my "stunning" collection of little china horse statues, all of which had names and all of which I loved.

But photography was limited by the cost of developing back then, and we weren't wealthy, so the little things went unphotographed and unrecorded (wish we'd had a tape recorder, too).

Those opportunities will never come again.

    1. I remember taking photos of my dolls with my sister, using my little point and shoot film camera! We set them all up like it was a family portrait. We did this with our Lego town too!
