Nine.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I post a picture and just a few words.   Today, I'm breaking form and posting three photos. 😉

Yesterday, Zoe turned nine.

We ate cake (well, ice cream cake.)

We gave her presents.

bags of presents

And she got her ears pierced.

(Because for some random reason, that's when we've gotten our girls' ears pierced.)

It's hard to believe, but Zoe was only 2 when I started blogging, and now here she is, one year away from being 10.

I would say something like, "How did that even happen?", but I know...the inexorable march of time and all that. 😉

Happy Birthday, Z!   We love you to the moon and back.

  1. Happy 9th Birthday Zoe! 9 is a big year, enjoy it!

Ice cream cakes are best (we had one for our wedding), yum!

Your pierced ears look awesome! So grown up!

  2. That is awesome! And somewhat ironic, because I'm finally going to be attempting your ice cream cake recipe this weekend to celebrate my dad's 54th, one sister's 19th, and the baby sister's 8th birthday! I sent my dad several links for potential desserts from Pinterest and he chose your cake! Nevermind that it is a high of 4 degrees in Wisconsin today! 😉
Happy Birthday, Zoe! So sweet to watch her grow!

    1. Well, it's highs in the teens here, but somehow we didn't feel like it was too cold for an ice cream cake. So we must be kindred spirits!

I hope yours turns out great!

          1. Well, your recipe was a smashing success! Everyone loved it! The next big batch of birthdays is May and they've already voted for another ice cream cake! Thank you!

  3. Happy Birthday, Zoe. My daughter and hers also did the earrings at age nine. My reason was she could handle most of the keeping clean and changing herself.
Time goes faster than we can imagine. Enjoy every stage while you are in it, or you'll miss it! I have admired how you do live in the present and do not seem to wish your kids to be older, Kristen. Watching your children grow from afar, we readers should consider ourselves fortunate. I have especially enjoyed Zoe's language cuteness. Thanks!

    1. I got mine pierced for my 9th birthday. My mom cited the same reason. I will probably continue the tradition with my daughters.

  4. Beautiful photos, as always! Oh my...my middle child is turning nine next month and wants her ears pierced more than anything. We have said she needs to be thirteen, but now I am second guessing our decision. She is definitely responsible enough to take care of them, so why not. I think I will discuss with my husband.

    1. My sister's rule is that her daughters could get their ears pierced when they could get shots/finger sticks at the doctor's without crying or whining.
I told her that meant I had to wait until I was ... 27. 🙂

    2. 13 just seemed SO long to wait, and for us, it's gone fine to have them done at 9. I'm pulling for your daughter. Ha. 😉

  5. Wow, seven years already?! It seems amazing how fast time can get away from you.

What makes me feel old is when people who are a year or two older than me (I'm in my early 30s) have teenagers and my wife and I are contemplating just starting to have kids.

    1. Battra--No worries: I suffered from inability to conceive and then to sustain pregnancy; however, at 31 and 33, I had healthy kids who have since given us almost (2 more months) 5 grandkids. You will appreciate them for sure. Good luck to you.

    2. Battra - Here's how you can feel like you're a young mom: compare yourself to me! God blessed us with No. 1 when I was 41 and No. 2 when I was 43. As another reader said - pluses and minuses to being an older or younger mom.
God doesn't make mistakes in His timing!

      1. I'd rather feel like I'm a young father (being a guy) but thanks. 🙂

And yeah, I try not to question His judgement or timing. I was so not even close to ready to even meet my wife when I was 21, let alone have kids then. Some are just ready at different times.

  6. Happy Birthday to Zoe!!! I've also enjoyed seeing your children grow up via pictures, and Zoe's photos, because she's the youngest & close in age to my baby, stick in my mind the most. My youngest turned nine in December but I stubbornly refer to him as my 3rd grader. You can be eight all thru 3rd grade, right? 🙂 We went the waiting to turn thirteen route for ear piercing. Eldest got them on her 13th birthday while the middle child just decided to pierce at age fifteen. To Battra: I echo the "no worries" advice. There are advantages on both sides of the fence on when to begin a family. My husband and I waited seven years because we weren't ready. Now we have three children, 16, 15, and 9. Is all good.

  7. My favorite is a whole chicken. Just a little salt and pepper and a tiny bit of water. It's fall apart tender and so easy to get every bit of meat off the bones.

  8. My favorite quick crock pot recipe is Sliced Pork Loin with gravy - slice and wash 4-6 pork loin chops, pat dry and place in bottom of crock pot. Cover with one packet of dry Ranch dressing powder, the poor one can of Cream of Chicken soup over meat and powder, place lid on top and cook eight hours on Low or 4 hours on High. Pour over cooked rice or mashed potatoes and your quick meal is ready.
Congratulations on your daughters ninth birthday, don't blink or she'll be all grown!!
