Food Waste Friday | Spinach, a Cuke, and a Brat

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.

A bratWURST, that is. 😉

A week's food waste.

Normally I'm willing to pick the remaining good leaves out of a bag of spinach, but not when there's yellow liquid in the bag. Eww.

The cucumber was forgotten about and the bratwurst was the last one in a package we didn't really like that much. We were trying something new, but I think we'll stick with the stadium brats.

Live and learn!

  1. No waste here. But I'd kind of figured that. I didn't shop till Tuesday and then ended up doing an impromptu experiment (for my blog) which meant we were to eat processed foods Tues through to today. Despite the ready-meals being snubbed by the Kids (now frozen for Hubby's lunches) we managed. It'll be interesting to see how next Friday compares - I've gone back to basics, even photographing a pig this morning whilst doing my grocery shop. Have a great weekend!

    1. Checked out your blog, LOVE it as well! Thanks for the great photos and ideas! Always fun to have a new blog to follow, thanks frugal girl for the find!

  2. No Waste here as well.. Also went for shopping new cloths this week. (hubby says that its WASTE of money, btw)

  3. I have a package of leftover brats that weren't my favorite too. I'm trying to figure out what I can hide them in next week before they go bad.

    1. Try putting them in beans. Like sixteen bean soup or black eyed peas. Cut up some onion, green onion, and bell pepper. Let that cook down with the brats and have over rice.

    3. You could cut it up and put it into spaghetti -- it would taste pretty similar to italian sausage.

  4. I didn't have a "food waste free" week either. I had made a roast with potatoes, carrots, and onion with a pork roast. I ate on it all week for lunch at work and then went away for the weekend. So I wasted about 2 potatoes, a carrot (cut up), and half an onion. Here's hoping next week is better but I have a pot full of Mulligan stew that only I am eating on and I don't see that I am going to make it without wasting. I froze too big of package. Live and learn.

  5. My food waste week was small but it does mean I've got to take a trip back to the grocery store earlier than usual, so that stings.

  6. Just one small avocado. I knew I was taking my chances when I bought them. They were marked down to 10 for $1, at the produce stand, so I bought 10. And just the one was all brown inside. The rest we had in guacamole, and salads. Even with the one having been bad, I figure my avocados had a final cost of 9 for $1, still a fab price! Anyone know what causes avocados to go brown inside when the outside still looks okay?

  7. If I can keep on top of things now that CSA deliveries have begun, we'll be okay this week. CSA season means a whole different way of men planning for us... Looking at what came in the bin and then buying groceries to supplement. At this point in the season, it means salad, salad and more salad!

Since one way to reduce food waste is to use leftovers, I need to share about the delicious shepherds pie I made from our roast beef supper leftovers. I just diced the beef, mixed in some gravy, sprinkled it with sea salt, then layered on the leftover green beans, some cooked carrots, frozen corn and the mashed potatoes. We always top our shepherds pie with grated cheddar and broil it right at the end too. So yummy! And my little ones enjoyed it much more than just a plate of leftovers.

  8. we didn't do too bad this week. we used up the vast majority of what I cooked, most of what I cooked used leftovers, and we wasted very little meat.

  9. We actually did well this week - a few grapes at the bottom of the bag going bad, but other than that everything has been fine. Probably b/c I'm not buying a lot of greens right now - they're coming out of the garden - and we are using up leftovers and eating fruit pretty quickly.

  10. No waste here either, I think I'm finally getting the hang of this thing! It's only taken nearly a year, lol!

  11. I'm ashamed to say that it was lettuce AGAIN for me this week. It was even from the same package as the one from last week. Ugh. BUT no meat this week!!

  12. I'm sorry to hear about your wasted bratwurst. It's sad when meat is wasted.
This week I was lucky enough to not have any food waste. It was a little rough coming up with things to eat by the end of the week, though. I had little in my fridge and pantry, so I had to do some creative cooking. 🙂

  13. One small mouldy mandarine orange was the only food waste for us this week, so we celebrated by making a recipe from a Baby and Child Vegetarian Recipe book that uses up some biscuit/cookie waste. How healthy is that! Or not?

  14. I had to toss a piece of meatloaf I didn't freeze because my husband swore he would have it on a sandwich or sandwiches this week and didn't...it happens

  15. I lost a lot of spinach last week. I plan to be much more intentional this week. Unfortunately this week I had to toss quinoa and lentils...boo!
Yesterday I bought a cuke for a veggie tray and completely forgot to cut it up and add it. My husband and I don't eat cuke's so I need to find it another home or it will make an appearance here next week.

  16. Kristen, I'm with you on the yellow liquid in the spinach bag. I've tried rinsing the leaves when that happens but they still taste bad.

Although we had more waste this week, it's still less than when I began paying attention to, and blogging about, our food waste.

  17. After volunteering at the rest station during a bicycle race, my sister gave me the left-over grapes, so they wouldn't go to waste. I saved most of them but a few got moldy despite my best efforts.

  18. I had to toss out a precious organic nectarine---how the heck did I let that happen?---and a lemon that went south only 2 days after I bought it---grrr. But I managed to save some potatoes that I had thought were too far gone by peeling off the nasty bits and making soup out of them.
