Check out my new glass straw!

That thing I showed you last week?

It's a purty blue glass straw.

I recently ordered some small stainless steel containers (love those!) from Hip Mountain Mama (the same shop where I got my sweet zippered bag), and she threw in a straw for me to try out.

Isn't it beautiful?

I first heard about glass straws on some environmental blogs a few years back, and I've been sort of curious about them ever since. While the reusable aspect appealed to me, glass straws sounded extremely fragile.

I think I was imagining straws made out of fancy-goblet-like glass. You know, the sort that break if you look at them the wrong way?

I'm happy to say that my straw is a lot sturdier than that...the glass is actually quite thick. And it's made from the same type of glass as Pyrex, which means as glass goes, it's really strong.

I wouldn't give one to a toddler, and I wouldn't let a kid use one around a tile floor, but it's definitely not going to break during normal usage.

And that makes sense. I mean, we use glass drinking vessels all the time, and we don't expect them to break unless we drop them. So, if there's anyone in your house who can be trusted with a drinking glass, I'd say they could be trusted with a glass straw as well.

If you like a bendy straw, you'll be interested to know that you can get bent glass straws and some even come with funky designs.

If you get a straight one, you might want to get the kind that have the funky design, because that keeps the straw from rolling (like, off a counter or table).

Of course, the MOST frugal thing is to down your beverage without a straw, but this straw would be great if you want a reusable, non-toxic version of the disposable variety, or if you just want to give someone a fun and beautiful gift. I also think a set of these would be fun for entertaining.

Hip Mountain Mama offers a nice selection of reusable items, so if glass straws aren't your thing, you might find something else there that suits your fancy.

disclosure: I received one free glass straw, but I was not otherwise compensated for this post, and I paid for my stainless steel containers. ๐Ÿ™‚ All opinions are my own.

  1. I don't know why (because I rarely ever drink from a straw, even in restaurants) but I have lusted after one of these things ever since I saw them in a blog post a couple years ago. They just look so pretty and unique!

  2. So cool! I just ordered a couple when I found out she's local AND offering a 20% discount through the weekend if you use the code LASTMIN. My husband loves using straws for drinks so we go through a lot. Hoping that finding a couple of these in his stocking with encourage him to ditch the plastic throw away kind.

  3. I have a couple of glass straws that I LOVE!!! As for cleaning them, as soon as I'm done using it I soap it up and rinse it really well, inside in particular, with as hot of water as I can possibly stand. I found through trial and error that they're much harder to clean after they've sat for a while.

  4. I have 2 glass straws and I love them! I never really used straws that often because it just seemed so wasteful to me, and plastic straws just feel so flimsy. I got them when I was ordering something else online and figured I'd give them a try. I use them all the time! I don't like the sport caps on my stainless steel water bottles, and the opening at the top is too large to drink out of in the car (I always end up spilling it on myself). The straws are awesome for that. The ones I have are the perfect length for the bottle or a pint mason jar. The ones I got came with a small brush to clean the insides of them with.

  5. I own a few stainless steel bendy (not really, just shaped with a bend) straws, plus I gave one to my niece last year. They're great for the odd time the girls want a straw. The company recommended cleaning them with a pipe cleaner, but I only let the kids use them for water or juice so a good rinse with hot water seems to suffice.

      1. I bought the stainless steel straws with a bend last year and the children love them.
The company suggested keeping them in the fridge to cool drinks, so we have 5 in there, and I keep 3 in my bag to try to stop restaurants putting straws in the children's drinks. It works if I remember I have them in there...

    1. I have the stainless bendy ones too. I actually put them in the dishwasher; with the bent part down in the silverware compartment, they don't fall through. Tho I do have a mini straw cleaner brush too, just in case, however I too usually only use them for water or juice and try to rinse right away.

      1. I ordered those stainless steel straws from opensky.com. I had a 10.00 credit with them so they were pretty reasonable. I drink iced coffee everyday and I love those straws. The liquid is so cold when it comes thru the straw. I havent cleaned them with the little brush. I just throw them in the dishwasher.

      1. I got mine on opensky.com. I had a credit for signing up and refering other ppl to sign up. I saw some on organize.com. A set of 4 for 10.00, but they dont come with a brush. The same ones can be found on amazon with free shipping( 25.00, min order).

  6. Oooo! I love drinking with a straw, especially water. Somehow it helps me drink faster so I hydrate better when equipped with a straw. This would be perfect for me!

  7. Woohoo! Thanks for posting this! I've been looking for some, so it's nice to have a recommendation ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Oy! I have NEVER heard of glass straws before! I'm so excited and want to buy myself a Christmas present NOW! Will definitely be shopping there with some of my Christmas money; I drink through a straw every day!
    Soooo excited!!!
