I have some new jewelry!

in Giveaways

And it came from Novica, a National Geographic company that sells handmade jewelry, paintings, women’s clothes, men’s scarves and other men’s accessories straight from the artists all over the world.  This cuts out some of the middle men, allowing artists to earn more money even while offering their items at lower prices than you’d find in a traditional store. It’s a partnership that’s beneficial for the artists and the consumers, and I love that Novica helps to support unique handmade art.

Novica also runs a micro-loan program where people like you and me can loan money to artists (who pay 0% interest on the loan).  And when you’re paid back, you get a 15% bonus on the amount you loaned if you spend it at Novica.

Novica sent me a gift certificate so that I could try out some of their products, and I headed straight for the jewelry, where I agonized over what to buy.  There are so many gorgeous items available, it’s awfully hard to choose.

I’m kind of a minimalist when it comes to jewelry (I love simple lines), and the two items I finally settled on reflect that….I ordered this bracelet:

And these earrings.

They came straight from Novica’s office in Thailand, packaged neatly in these gift boxes which are made from sustainably harvested bark in Thailand.

The products you can buy through Novica aren’t going to be as inexpensive as what you could pay by shopping discount retailers, but on the other hand, the jewelry I have is well-made (I don’t think my silver earrings will turn copper like the ones from Claire’s) and by buying it, I’m supporting a small business instead of a massive corporation.

Ten to fifteen years ago, I probably wouldn’t be as jazzed about this kind of jewelry, but I’ve gotten to a point where I’d rather spend a little more to own a few quality products instead of owning a bunch of not-so-well-made products that are less expensive.

Less is more, baby!

And if the well-made products support a good cause, that sweetens the deal all the more.

If you need to buy a gift for someone (especially if that someone values handmade items and loves to support artists), I think Novica would be a great resource.  I’m quite inclined to do some Christmas shopping there for Lisey…she’s got sensitive ears, and there are so many little earrings with sterling silver posts which would be perfect for her (she’d love these butterfly earrings).

Now, when Novica contacted me about their store, they offered to give me a $150 certificate to spend for myself.

But, since I wanted you to be able to try Novica out, I opted to split the $150 into two certificates…$75 for me and $75 for one of you!

So, I’ve got a $75 Novica code to give away to one of you, dear readers.  All you’ve got to do is leave me a comment telling me what you’d like to buy from Novica (jewelry, a vase, a painting? Go check out all they’ve got to offer!).

I’ll randomly choose a winner on Monday morning, August 15th, so don’t delay…enter now!

disclosure: Novica gave me a $75 certificate to spend but I was not otherwise compensated in any way, shape, or form. All opinions are my own.

P.S.Novica also wanted me to tell you that they have a new home party division called Novica Live.  Go check it out if you’d like to find a party or a consultant!

Wow! Beautiful items, wonderful idea. I would buy gifts for my sisters. My youngest sister is recently engaged and there is a beautiful owl ring with “wise amethyst eyes” that she would love. My middle sister is a recent art school graduate and is about to move into a new apartment. She loves buffalo! There are pages of art and jewelry featuring buffalo, so I’m sure there is something perfect for her new place there. Thank you for sharing this company!

Thanks for the heads up on this. I think this will be great for jewelry for Christmas presents. My preteen daughter and her friends are at the perfect stage to wean off of Claire’s and both are interested in helping those less fortunate. We’ll probably talk about doing a microloan as a family. This is perfect!

I don’t wear much jewelry, but I would especially love to have some that can give back. I am also a fan of the organization Beads for Life, which sells beautiful handmade beaded jewelry that is made by women in Africa as a means of providing for their families. Beads for Life also cuts out the middleman and the money goes directly to to the creators of the jewelry. I would love to give back by buying either jewelry or other trinkets that would benefit others.

It has so many different colors that it could be worn all the time. Thank you for all your great posts!

Even if I don’t win I’m pretty sure I’ll be buying a skirt and putting one of the jewelry boxes on my Christmas list! :)

KRISTEN!! I kid you not – Brian gave me those EXACT SAME earrings for my birthday, along with this necklace: http://jewelry.novica.com/necklaces/heart-shaped/sterling-silver-pendant-necklace-living-love/181439/ — We ADORE Novica, for all of the reasons that you mentioned, as well as because the items are all so unique. I have a couple of tapestries hanging in our living room from Novica, too :)

If I have to pick something new (and I would LOVE this gift certificate), I would choose anything from the Gujarti tapestry page: http://wall-hangings.novica.com/gujarati-wall-hangings-india/

I love fair trade items, and I try to purchase them whenever possible. I think that fair trade, not free trade, is what is best for the American economy, foreign economies, local economies, and what God wants from all of us. I love supporting companies like Novica, Ten Thousand Villages, etc.

Just the kind of jewelry I love – simple lines. And supporting local artisans. Yea! I try, when I can, to buy when I know that someone smaller benefits – even when it costs more. And for most of the people for whom I buy, it matters to them too. And I let them know from where it came.

Yea you for buying yourself something!

I don’t really wear jewelery but I have some fabulous women in my life who do.

=D Have a great day!

One thing I’d love to get here is the blue topax drop earrings(http://jewelry.novica.com/earrings/drop-earring/blue-topaz-drop-earrings-sublime/180423/); I love the simple lines and how it would add a touch of femininity and elegance to just about anything.

So I browsed the site and was really very happy to come across this: http://www.novica.com/itemdetail/index.cfm?pid=150935

I didn’t get my ears pierced til I was 31 – and I’ve got only a few pair that I wear most of the time. Like you, I’d rather have a limited collection of high quality, beautiful, and preferably fairly traded pieces of jewelry, than a whole pile of mediocre options.

Jewelry! You have lovely taste, both bracelet and earrings are gorgeous (as well as the pendant necklace that you are wearing in the first picture!)

I already knew about this site and had purchased a pair of earrings, so I would love to win!

I would use the gift card for a wall hanging. My husband and I have been looking for unique and quality art with which to decorate our first apartment, and so far we have been rather unsuccessful in finding pieces that are within our price range. The art from Novica is very unique, and I especially liked some of the Andean Design Tapestries.

Oohh…so many things to choose from! I’d probaby go for a bracelet though. Back in my pre-marriage, pre-children days, I would collect a new bracelet from each country I traveled to. This could be sort of traveling without leavning home. :)

Love the new hair! Cooler summer do. We’re all about “less is more” when it comes to hair and August here. :)

I am so excited to find Novica, last February my husband and I went to Mexico. While there I found a beautiful platter that I wanted to buy, but it was slightly over my budget so I walked away. It’s the only time in my life I have said no to something over budget and regretted it, I really wish we just would have bought it! So imagine my excitement when looking through the website I came across the platter I fell in love with in Mexico!! The artist is Alonso Luis and the piece I would buy is Talavera ceramic plate, ‘Dancing Sunflowers’ I love it! I would love to win the 75$ to buy what I wish I would have bought 7 months ago!!!

I love the pearl necklaces; I really don’t wear a ton of jewelry, but I’ve been looking for a birthday present for my aunt, and she would LOVE some of this. So, I might use it on her.

What a great business–I love the idea of the artisan making more for their work! And the products they offer are gorgeous :)

Sterling silver cocktail ring, ‘Coquette Skull’ is so cool! It looks all Day of the Dead-ish. Very cool.

With the $50.00 I would buy my family a Christmas dinner if it were sold on that site. :( This is going to be a very sad Christmas this year…again.
