Food Waste Friday | I wasted chicken. Boo.

A small container of chicken.

This chicken probably should have gone out last week, but I was still waffling on whether or not it was good. It's some leftover BBQ chicken which I made when Mr. FG was in Chicago. I apparently way over-estimated how much I needed to prepare in his absence, and then somehow the leftovers didn't get eaten. Nuts.

But the rest of my fridge is free of waste, and I don't even have many leftovers lurking about in there either.

  1. Oh Kristen, you crack me up.

Double nuts on the chicken. It was leftover guest stuff for me this week.

  2. Just some oatmeal here this week. I'm not feeling so good about next week. We'll see how much in leftovers we eat this weekend.

    Happy Friday!

    1. Wait, what? Oatmeal? Was it cooked or did it go bad in bulk while dry? (Curious. I'd be very. very. sad if one morning I opened my oatmeal and found my breakfast unacceptable.)

  3. Too bad you don't have a cat lurking about. Last week mine ate up a leftover hotdog and some porkchop.

  4. Not linking up this week, may later, but wanted to share my condolences. I have some ham that got pushed to the back of the deli drawer...nuts! It no smelly good:(

  5. Technically I haven't wasted the watermelon yet but the jury is still out. See, it turns out that watermelon is subject to gravity, as proven by experiment last week. We did what we could but nonetheless, I shoved the remaining 1/2 gallon of watermelon in the freezer, maybe I can do something with it.

I also have one plum on the edge: it got crushed by an inattentive packer and is now notably soft on one side.

    1. The Pioneer Woman made a delicious looking watermelon granita a few weeks ago. That might be a new and different way to use up your leftover watermelon.

      1. I considered granita, but it would be more work than I'd like. I would have to clear out space in the freezer, put granita in without spilling, remembering to stir it after it was half-frozen, put it in a container without spilling. I don't think my skills are up to it.

  6. I said goodbye to some scallions, applesauce, spinach & artichoke dip, a peach, lettuce, and a jalapeno. Apparently I have stopped taking this seriously. Ack.

  7. We wasted a large amount of pasta salad this week and for no other reason than my mom made way too much of it. She still cooks like she is living at home with her 3 brothers, mother and father. Here is hoping for a better week next week.

  8. It was a no waste week for me! Which is excellent as I'm going out of town tomorrow for a wedding. I love being able to leave without worrying that something is going to spoil while I'm gone.

  9. Ouch! I hate throwing out chicken too! But good for you that's it's only a little chicken!
Our losses were minimal-3 losses vs. 3 successes. That's up from last week when my losses outweighed my successes! This is sure keeping me on my toes!

  10. apparently for us, juicing is the key to using up all the fruits and veggies! the pulp does get tossed, but I would rather toss the pulp than toss the whole fruit/veggie....

  11. Not much waste this week, I am the guy with chickens so nothing gets wasted! BUT, the chickens have stopped laying! I am still feeding them - chicken food and scraps - so does that constitute waste? The usual deal is I give them food, they give me eggs, their side of the deal seems to have fallen through. So what do I do now? Stop feeding them? Eat them? Or wait for the hot weather to pass, some have told me it is the fault of the hot weather. I am in doubt about that, chickens lay eggs in Texas`don't they - it is hot there.
Well we will see what happens. It has been 6 days now without one single egg, unheard of.

    1. My parents have chickens. Are they a little old? Are they eating thier own eggs? I would wait and see after the weather passes and then (burp). Maybe get a few chickies and start over, good luck!

  12. David-
I have friends with chickens and they haven't been laying well either, because of the heat. (I'm down here in humid Tennessee) Are your chickens brooding? Maybe they are hiding the eggs somewhere? Maybe they are on vacation. 😉
As far as food waste goes, just some spinach, mustard and one potato here.
I love reading all of you people's comments on here, you crack me up! 🙂

  13. FYI National Geographic has a huge article on food this month. Mainly the lack of variety ( specieswise) and food waste. Thought you might find that interesting. Also to the person with the watermelon-- my kids are always begging for slushies but I only buy I only buy them about 3 a year because I really think they should be a rare treat. To appease them, I experimented with blending frozen watermelon with a small amount of gingerale to make a homemade slushy. They really like it!

  14. A melon (don't you hate it when produce HIDES), a bit of celery (but ate the rest of the on-the-edge celery), but then this morning left food in my fridge that was supposed to come to work, especially since I won't be home again for 5 days. Well, we'll see how the food fares in my absence. 🙂

On the bright side, I managed to NOT kill a bouquet of basil, and in fact, it's sprouting roots! I'll use up the rest or plant it when I get home...

All in all, I'd give myself a solid B. Ate a lot of home-cooked, which sort of offsets the sad sad shy melon.

  15. A week away on the Cornish Coast meant responsibility for ensuring two fridges were waste free, and I succeeded! Hurrah! My blog post today therefore is one of my empty fridge and home and one of the shoreline. Know where I'd rather be 🙂

  16. My first week to participate! I don't have much since we just moved to a new place, but I definitely want to get better about not wasting food!

  17. I wasted a huge jar of cocktail sauce, 4 slices of molded whole grain bread, 1/2 cup of milk, a few cloves of garlic, 1 cup of shredded beets. I think I may be leaving something out but I better try better next time. I did make a yummy loaf outta the leftover ham. I need to make less food. 🙁

  18. My first Food Waste Friday link up... Ugh. It seems like so much more when you are typing it all out. No wonder it's a good motivator to waste less.

  19. Late here since we were gone for the weekend--the last few spoonfuls in a jar of homemade (ack!) pear chutney, part of a bundle of chard, and some chinese cabbage salad that tasted funky after a couple days in the cooler. The salad should really be for next week since I toseed it this morning, but I'll probably forget by then.
