Food Waste Friday | I have iffy tomatoes

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born. If you’re not a blogger but still want some food waste accountability, feel free to participate by leaving a comment.

I don’t have a picture of them, but I know I have about 3 tomatoes in my veggie drawer that are, well, iffy. They’re pretty soft, but I might be able to rescue them by turning them into sauce. I just need to make sure they’re not too far gone.

Other than that, I’m good to go for this week. Yay me!

Since I have so little to say today, I’ll use the extra space to remind you to enter in my current giveaways. I’m giving away a $100 Visa gift card on my Libman review and a $100 SpaFinder gift card on my undereye concealer review. The winners are chosen on an entirely random basis, so your chances of winning are as good as anyone else’s!

So you have 3 bad tomato that your considering making into a sauce, just with the 3? I've never made my own tomato sauce, but we will have a big garden this year that I'm crossing my fingers will produce a lot of ...well produce!!! I want to do some canning and freezing of said produce but not sure how. I have 2 book borrowed from the library on this very subject tough!! Also when you make your tomato sauce, is it seedless? Is it chunky? or smooth? So many questions....! :)

Forgot to post on Friday since a training/team building meeting ran over by a few hours and I was late home and exhausted.

I didn't cook last week either so ended up spending too much money on canteen type food for lunches, even if I did keep it on the cheaper side by opting for buying sandwiches and eating outside rather than meals in the canteen or a restaurant. So I didn't go to the market yesterday. It would have been nice to go and get some milk and salad but I know I wouldn't have restricted myself to just that. I still have a leek and some carrots left as well as potatoes and onions and tins of tomatoes and some frozen veg. More than enough to cook meals for a few weeks. So no shopping for me this week (well, I did go to the supermarket and buy some chocolate) in an effort to stave off any food waste next week. That has to be my new plan of action I think - only get to buy new food if I've used up everything I bought the week before and otherwise just have to live with perhaps not buying milk every week.

I did try to pretty up a salad last week by toasting some seeds and realised that this was one more thing that has been sitting in my cupboard since before I moved here and that eventually even seeds do go off. They smelled off so I just got rid of them. All added together it was probably nearly a full 400ml tupperware container - sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, linseeds.

And I have four very bananas, which were supposed to be used to make banana bread last weekend and have now passed from the very ripe to completely black stage. But I'm going to give the banana bread a go anyway if they aren't mouldy inside.

I am almost embarrassed to link up here with our food waste but I figure only by being accountable will we become better about reducing our food waste. Sadly, I have to blame some of the food waste on the refrigerator freezing a bunch of the produce--non-working fridge! Thanks for hosting the link-up!

Nothing this week. I don't count the bagged onions, two of which were moldy when I bought them.

I hate it when that happens...I always am annoyed that I didn't manage to see the mold.

I just joined this blog and what a great idea. Hopefully this will motivate me as I threw out a complete brand new, unopened bag of coleslaw and 4 croissants. I over bought due to a "Buy one get one free" sale and what a bummer to waste that wonderful food, especially in light of our finances. Hugs, Trish

Oh, Trish! I'm having the exact same problem: the sales lure me, and I have a lot of trouble distinguishing between a wise purchase that we need and will use, and a purchase for the sake of a good deal.
