Thankful Thursday | a nurse, not a patient

This week, I am thankful:

that I did not get hurt on the ski trip

I say this because I approach each ski trip with a slight sense of trepidation. I am a pretty good skier, and when the conditions are good and safe, I go FAST (like nearly 60 mph).

Kristen skiing

I am careful, of course, but at this speed, a wipeout could be rather disastrous. So, I am always grateful to exit a ski trip with my body intact.

WHEW.

Before I left, I told my coworkers about my trip and I said, "I'm gonna try to come back as a nurse and not as a patient!"

And I'm glad I managed that. 😉

for free Wifi on Southwest

This is revolutionary for me! I have never sprung for the paid in-flight WiFi, but now with Southwest's revamped program, I get WiFi for no extra charge. Yay!

southwest planes.

That meant I could do homework and write blog posts on the long trip cross-country.

for some warmer air

I'm good on winter now; we had a snowstorm, the snow stuck around for a long time, and I went skiing. I'm satisfied!

Spring can come, as far as I'm concerned. 😉

So, I'm grateful for the much warmer weather we are having now.

Also...March is just a little over a week away! And where I live, things start to feel slightly like spring in March.

that my next oil tank filling will be cheaper

We just came out of SUCH a stretch of unusually cold weather, so my oil tank refill bill was pretty high: $756.*

Next time it will be less!

*the last refill was in mid-December, so at least this wasn't just one month's worth of fuel.

that I can pay the bill without a problem

I am remembering that my first two winters here, I was paying these oil tank bills with difficulty. But then I got divorced and was able to drop my lawyer (ha), and now it is much, much easier to handle a big ol' oil bill.

that we have been warm and cozy

It's been a little expensive, yes, but I am profoundly grateful to have a warm place to live. It's not something to take for granted!

for my shower window

The shower in my condo was in a windowless room, so when I got home, I was freshly reminded how nice it is to have some natural light in the bathroom!

shower window.

for the recharging power of sleep

I just finished working three shifts, and while I often come home completely exhausted, I am continually amazed at how a good night of sleep recharges me. I go to bed with almost no energy, and then in the morning, I'm ready to get back at it again.

And now I'm heading out to my monthly six-hour new grad class, which is going to involve a lot of sitting.

(Which honestly is its own kind of exhausting! But maybe directly after three shifts, it will be nice.)

What are you thankful for this week?

  1. My biggest item is that my daughter in law got great news on the results of her pet scan. She is undergoing chemotherapy and her pet scan shows it is really working. I am also thankful for my two granddaughters. The teen-aged one calls us frequentry and her younger sister sends messages through her iPad. So glad they reach out to us on their own. And lastly, we have the most wonderful next-door neighbors. They have become family.

  2. How did you like the assigned seating on Southwest now? Better than open seating? Worse?

    Thankfuls:

--That my kids have had a fun time dressing up for spirit week this week. Our school incentivizes it heavily (prizes mostly, but also the FFA teacher takes participation points if her sulky middle/high school students don't make some effort, ha), and we've done pretty well finding things that work for each day. My middle son won yesterday's "tropical tourist" day wearing his older brother's palm-tree-printed swim trunks over his jeans and a paper parrot that he's had since 2nd grade pinned to one of my straw hats. He will now use that award-winning parrot to justify his hoarding to me forevermore. 🙂

--That my husband has started painting with watercolors. A surprisingly useful thing, as well as very fun and relaxing for him. He mostly makes small cards that we send to people for various occasions, but he also painted old white T-shirts with hibiscus flowers for the two boys who didn't have anything to wear for the aforemention tropical spirit day. They thought it was fun to wear something Dad made, and I thought it was fun that I didn't have to make them.

--That the range fire that started on this hellishly windy Tuesday was quickly brought under control. We haven't had nearly enough snow or rain this winter, and almost 40-mile-an-hour winds on dry grass are a very bad thing. That fire jumped the hill and was too close to the village for anyone to be comfortable.

--For the volunteers who come out to fight these fires. They came from up to a hundred miles away.

--For the season of Lent, and the opportunity it gives to settle and re-focus my attention on something greater than myself.

--For discovering a new cocktail that I loved, the French 75. Before Lent, obviously :-). I don't drink much, and when I do it is a single drink, so it has to be a good one. This one was, and I will remember it for future holidays or special occasions.

    1. I had to look up that cocktail (mostly because I am not well-versed in cocktails). We don't have everything, but we did just buy some local gin: it caught my eye in the liquor store (when my husband was buying communion wine) because it was marketed to the local aviation community (which I am learning a lot more about). I'll have to remember this one sometime if we have all the ingredients because, I, too, want the drink to be good when I have it.

  3. There are some thankfuls this week:

That DS#3's most concerning symptom seems to have ceased (bleeding). Also that his pain is pretty much gone, and that we will be able to start tapering off the steroids on Saturday, because those are nasty and I'm sure they're not making it easy for him to sleep at all. We started a new med this week that will be hopefully taking over once he's done with the steroids.

That DS#3 is on a better emotional keel. They had him on oxycodone for pain in the hospital, and he was still taking some when he came home, but he was encouraged to get off of it, and he's much more stable emotionally. I saw the same thing happen with DS#1 when he weaned off the strong painkillers; emotional lability is rough.

That DS#4 has really stepped up and had a great afternoon keeping DS#3 company, playing video games with him, and talking. DS#3 is not the kind of patient who wants to be left alone, so this meant I could get some things done around the house.

Power outage thankfuls: For generators and a clever DH. Last night our power went out right before dinner. I had the rice cooker ready to go, and there was taco meat keeping warm in the slow cooker. Not to mention the fridges full of food. Luckily DH was home and he is a Problem Solver. First he took one generator, the quieter one, and put it where he could plug in DS#3's Playstation so the boys could keep entertaining themselves. Then that same generator powered the rice cooker--we had to put the cooker outside, so I said I felt like Ma Ingalls on the Kansas prairie, cooking outside. The other generator he put in the backyard and it powered the two fridges and a lamp for light in the kitchen.

When we needed a microwave (for heating up DS#4's quesadilla), DH simply took a small microwave from the garage and plugged it in where the rice cooker had been, and microwaved outside. Brilliant. So we were able to have a nice meal and watch a movie on the playstation with DS#3, and I am also very thankful that the power came back ON at 8 pm before bed, so we didn't have to brush our teeth by flashlight.

I am also thankful that DS#2 seems to be enjoying his new job as a nurse aide; he tells (HIPPA friendly) stories of the residents he's caring for. He was put on the Memory Care unit on the second shift, which is not for the faint of heart due to sundowning, but he's pretty good with the "explorers" (the wandering residents) and already has a favorite co-worker.

    1. Thank DS#2 for his work with memory care patients. It takes special people to have the patience needed for that unit.
My Daddy had dementia and was a roamer.

    2. Seroquel helped my late mother with sundowning. Probably also helped my dad pulverized it and mixed it with ice cream. She developed a mighty sweet tooth during this phase.

  4. I don't think it would bode well if I went hurtling down a hill on skis!

    My thankfuls:
    1. I motivated myself to get up at six and go to the gym. As well as getting it done early, I enjoyed a beautiful sunrise and a quick splash in the sea!

    2. I'm going to see a friend after work today.

    3. I'm thankful that I had a few days to recharge after my trip to Florence. I'm also thankful for some guests I chatted with who said I'm lovely to talk to 🙂

    4. I enjoyed watching Severance which I'd been meaning to check out for a while.

    5. I'm kind of done with winter now but I've been enjoying walking on the frozen lakes!

  5. For the knitting "retreat" over the weekend. It was just a bunch of us in a hotel conference room but it was FUN. This was my first chance to get to know some of the group members and I enjoyed the company of every one of them. I feel refreshed.

For a heavily discounted yarn purchase. One other knitter and I were congenially arm-wrestling over some purple silk/merino. She told me about some for sale on Ravelry (the main website community for fiber workers), selling for about 85% *less* than retail.

For better weather in which to walk my dog.

For modern dentistry. 300 years ago I'd've probably lost all my teeth ages ago.

For the steam option in my shower. The shower has two outside walls and gets very cold in the winter. Running the stream for a few minutes is more conservation-minded than running hot water.

  6. Although I am not member of any particular denomination, I value the opportunity Lent brings of "culling excess". Like previous years, I will be doing a digital detox and drastically reducing online presence after work.
Ofcourse I will participate in Thankful Thursday since it focuses on all that is good, uplifting, and kind.

    Thankful that
    - eldest who will be moving out soon, expresses appreciation and love every day
    - eldest is ready and prepared for this move - financially, practically, emotionally
    - I was given additional responsibilities at work
    - it may still be cold, but the angle of the sun is telling us spring is around the corner
    - I have so much more energy now than in December
    - I reread some John Donne poetry and as always am blown away.

    1. Donne is our most recent literature in our little homeschool (high school kids). I appreciated him more than I did when I was in college.

  7. My thankfuls this week, of course, are all about NDN1 and her upcoming move to assisted living--which will probably be happening early next week. CF, I, and a team of gentlemen from CF's church will be moving NDN1's furniture into the room on Saturday. (Thanks in advance to the gents!)

First, I'm profoundly thankful that NDN1 is, so far, cooperating with all this. She's not happy about the move, of course; who would be? But I'm well aware that she could be resisting a lot harder than she is. And CF, I, and all the neighbors to whom I've broken the news agree that she'll be a lot safer.

Second, I'm thankful that the facility and everyone we've met in it so far are so open and welcoming. One of the two residents with whom we had lunch last Friday saw us in the waiting area on Monday and called out to NDN1, "Are you gonna move in?" When we all said "Yes," she said, "Hooray!"

And third, I'm profoundly thankful for CF. It was through a member of her church whose mother lived at the facility for 5 years that CF found out about it, and CF's been handling the business end of things throughout the process. My role, as it usually is in our pairing, is to be "boots on the ground" here at NDN1's. I've finally finished unloading the family heirloom desk NDN1 wants to take with her (hey, it only took 8 hours), have been doing laundry like a maniac, and have started rounding up toiletries, books, and other belongings.

    1. You are a saint! (I hope that feels like a compliment because that is how it was meant!). Caregiving in any form - and especially for lengthy periods - is such hard work on many levels. May there be rewards - on an earth and in heaven - for you and those who do the heavy lifting (literally and figuratively).

      1. Thanks to Jean C, Cheryl, and JDinNM for the compliments. But I'm no saint. I'm just one childless widow doing the best I can for another one, and hoping that the "pay it forward" principle will work for me some day.

  8. Glad you had fun skiing and no injuries! 60 mph is fast to not be sitting in a vehicle with a seat belt on!

    I'm thankful:
    - that my son knew how to fix an issue with our van.
    - I've been procrastinating cooking a big ol turkey, but finally did it and now we have plenty of meat for meals to come!
    - sunshine
    - Coffee
    - clean water

  9. This week I'm thankful:

    *for the coffee.

*that my daughter's piano shawl is coming along so well. She's finished the color work keys, and it looks so nice! Also that Michael's had the yarn online because she needed more black, and it looked like they were phasing it out in the store.

*for no broken bones when girls fell on black ice.

*for my brother-in-law-- the one who was 10 when I met him and who told my future husband, "Get rid of her. You don't need a girl." He's a gem and so caring. He's coming out this weekend to help with butchering. I'm so grateful because my husband had a procedure or two this week and has some physical restrictions. And my two oldest boys are away in Minnesota. I love the man that little boy has become so much!

*that I'm feeling spring even if it's not quite "in the air" yet. I think it's the light. I love it.

*that I won't feel overwhelmed forever. Maybe just this week. Hurrah! for lights at the ends of tunnels!

    1. Your story about your BIL made me chuckle, and I'm glad he's outgrown his 10-year-old "girl cooties" and become a gem.

      1. The funniest part of that story is that he was walking next to my eventual-husband and saying that at the exact same time his younger sister was walking next to me and asking, "If you get married, can I be the flower girl?" (She was the flower girl, and he was the ring bearer.)

  10. 1. For chocolate cake on my birthday, even if it was a small store bought one. And for birthday freebies like free meals and free car washes.
    2. For all the nice birthday wishes from so many frugal friends.Again thank you all! Also for my best friend who lives in another state phoning last night despite the fact she was sitting with her sibling in the hospital.
    3. Craft stores and $4 earrings. Makes me feel luxurious although they were on post holiday clearance.
    4. That I paid off the car loan over a year early and saved oodles of interest. (Doing a happy dance!)
    5. That the Social Security $ arrived in my account right on time, thus making #4 possible.

  11. I have been so thankful this winter that even with extreme cold for my area of South Carolina, we only filled the propane for heat one time. I checked yesterday and we still have 45%. The insulation we put in last year paid for itself between the improved heat bill and the tax write off. We also were able to use the wood stove this year. Last year we filled it twice at $700+ each time. Lower propane prices also meant that our one fill up was only $450 this year.

  12. I was just reading an article about how Southwest has changed some things. There were some points of frustration for the author, but it sounds like changes worked well for you?

    Thankfuls:
-a big snow. And a return to freezing temperatures. It gives us a chance to go skating in warmer weather, but still cold enough for frozen ice. And maybe build a snowman. Winter isn’t over and winter without snow is no fun.
-the ability to stay at a cabin for an extra night to let some bad weather pass. It’s nice to have some extra in my pocket for unexpected happenings like that.
-pools! I love to be in the pool and play and got to lots of it this week.
-the ability to get outside and run, walk, play with ease. I imagine my body won’t always be able to do this so I’m enjoying it now.
-my kids—they’re awesome. And as they’re getting bigger I’m getting to see new facets of their character which is really fun.

  13. I'm thankful for the spring-like weather, but I find that it tends to shift me into wanting spring, which is unrealistic for where I live. However, I'm enjoying the moment, with warmer temps and most importantly, sunshine.

    For tea.

For a good day at work.

For the two little crocuses (is that the plural?) blooming by the south side of my house.

    For my family.

  14. So thankful that a real pain of a website project is finally "finished." Finished enough, anyway. The rest can be done in a few days when my mind is over the worst of it. Also thankful to have the skills and perseverance to keep going when projects like this feel overwhelming.

Very thankful for not having to cook dinner the past few nights for various reasons. It hasn't been the most frugal week around here, but that's ok! Life happens.

Thankful we're finally getting some wintry weather and snow in the mountains.

Especially thankful today for grocery pickup!

  15. This week I'm thankful
    - that I got to go visit my sister and BIL and see their new house
    - that my first loaves of sourdough bread turned out so well
    - that our daughter granted me the honor of making the birthday cakes for our grandson's 2nd birthday. I always made and decorated cakes for our kid's birthdays. I made everything from a puppy, X-box controller, a dragon, a beach scene to a sword.
    - that I made a practice birthday cake. Grandson's cake will be decorated with a train theme. The flavor was well received, and lessons were learned on the decorations.
    - that we are slowly gaining more daylight in the evenings.

  16. After many months (almost two years!) of my mom's house being on the market, it looks like a purchase is pending. This is good news, as my siblings and I are ready to have the estate settled and the house was the last piece of the puzzle. I know I will feel all of the feels the day that it is finally, totally closed. Also I am thankful for:
*clean sheets, ha ha. I am washing and storing the flannel ones since I guess Spring is officially here - it will be in the low 80s today.
*meeting up with an old friend today - always so good
*payday, which is a major blessing to me. Going back to school when I was 32 and mom to two toddlers was one of the best things I ever did for future Gina. (:

  17. I'm thankful that my "patient" -- my friend recovering from hip replacement surgery -- is doing well, feeling better and stronger every day.

I am grateful that she is covering my expenses while I'm here in return for my care.

I'm grateful for the beautiful unseasonal weather we've been having.

I'm grateful that my grandson, who was attacked and bitten by a dog while riding his bike, was not badly injured and is back to doing all activities.

I'm grateful that my son got an outpouring of help from his father's family to pay the COBRA bill while he is unemployed.

I'm grateful that I slept well last night! Good sleep is getting hard to come by at my age.

  18. This week I’m thankful:

    1) I have kids who are driven to learn. Sometimes their perfectionism feels like a lot, but I remind myself that these traits will serve them well in adulthood.
    2) that we are less than 6 weeks from all of the college admissions decisions. My oldest is waiting to weigh their options and it will be good to know what next year holds.
    3) that I’ve had time to cook and keep up with meal planning. It can feel like a slog but I know my family (and myself) have healthier food with lower expense due to my efforts and that brings me joy. I do sometimes wonder how many family meals I will cook (and clean up after) in my lifetime…
    4) that we had a bit of warm weather (50s!) in the past week. It’s now snowing again but it was blissful being out without a coat for a few days.
    5) for the ability of a hot epsom salt bath to relax the muscles and mind.

    1. on #3:

I once calculated that I had cooked over 10,000 eggs so far in my lifetime, and I'm only in my 40s! It was a little overwhelming to realize it was THAT many, but also reassuring that there's a reason I can do that particular task well with very little thought every morning.

5 dinners per week (we have one leftover night, and one night my husband makes pizza every week) times 20-ish years since I graduated from college and became 100% responsible for my own dinner every night times 50 weeks a year (assuming there are a handful of weeks per year that I don't cook 5 nights a week)... 5,000 dinners! And I'll hit 10,000 dinners around age 62. That's kind of wild.

And that doesn't include breakfast or lunch (tbh, lunch for me is frequently dinner leftovers, and breakfasts are so simple 99% of time I don't really consider it "cooking").

    2. I have a high school senior, too, and the not knowing what's next isn't the easiest for him. His decision will be entirely dependent on outside scholarships. . . .so...?

  19. *A week in a warm climate with family, away from the ice and snow that is hanging around home for over three weeks. I even got to take off my shoes and walk in the Tampa Bay -- heavenly.
*Daffodils one inch high greeted us upon our return. They started coming up even before the snow started seriously melting.
*A huge flock of birds woke me up chirping in the trees behind my house this morning.
*Good books, fun yarn projects, evening fires in the grate, candles to fight off the dark mornings, Thankful Thursday friends.

  20. I am thankful for my job. There are times when my co-workers get on my nerves, but the job pays well which means I can pay all my bills, not need roommates, can buy food as needed, fill the tank as needed, etc.
Thankful for my crazy kitty who amuses me and keeps me company.
Not personally thankful for the snow we've been getting but I know that Mt Bachelor is getting snow which brings the skiers and snowboarders into town where they support our economy.
Thankful for a working dryer in the clubhouse as my own dryer is still dead,
Really thankful for 2-3 years of the HVAC system as I would lose my mind if I had to build fires all the time (have plenty of wood BUT the getting up every two hours to feed the woodstove got really old really fast the one year that the woodstove was the only game in town LOL)

  21. How has that new grad class been? Do you feel like it's worth the time?

There's been some debate in my program and on the floor where I work as a tech whether the new grad programs are worth it, or just a time suck for the new grads, especially the ones in RN-to-BSN completion programs who are already taking more classes!

    1. Haha, that's me, a new grad taking RN-to-BSN classes. Funnily enough, the one today was about a an evidence-based practice project, which is exactly what I am doing this week in my BSN class.

I would say that I've learned some stuff, but also some of it was superfluous for me. Like last month, we spent the whole time talking about self-care, and honestly, at this point in my life, I think I am pretty good at knowing how to take care of my body and my mind well. So that one felt like kinda a waste of time for me personally.

But we do get paid for going to them, so I can't complain too hard. 😉

  22. Woke up to a winter wonderland, grateful that my neck of the PNW, it will only last hours.
A dear neighbor had emergency electrical problems, so I took her my two inverters and my JVC blue tooth speaker that is also a power bank to run phone and ipad. I took her my French press to make coffee or a pot of tea. The power contractors were there for 9 hours! I took them warm from the oven chocolate chip cookies and 2 thermos of coffee.
My nurse in training kiddo was home for a break and to do laundry and study in a quiet house without roommates. She went with me to visit No power neighbor as she is a retired nurse and has great stories.

  23. I’m thankful for the extra (almost) 2 hours of daylight. Oh, so good for the heart and soul!
Thankful for the time spent with family last Sunday to celebrate my brother’s birthday and just catch up with each other. Many of us tend to hibernate in the winter.
Thankful that I have committed to riding the exercise bike 5 times a week and doing an online class three or four times a week. I feel so much better when I do. It will still be a couple of months before I can get outside to start working in the yard, but my legs feel stronger and my balance is better.
Always thankful for Deb, our tax preparer, who gets the job done efficiently and timely every year. The return was a bit more than expected. And will be deposited next week. We have a couple of costly projects coming up and we will be prepared.
Thankful always for my husband who takes care of so many things around here. Most recently it was tires on my car, which we had planned to replace this spring. One developed a leak, which needed filling every day, and finally, he just called, made an appointment, got four new tires installed and now it is all good. Hooray!

  24. 1. Thankful that my Mother is having a good week and some of my siblings were able to visit from out of town.
    2. Thankful that an old friend reached out to get together for lunch and that a mutual friend happened to reach out the morning we were meeting, so they joined us too.
    3. Thankful that the ice has finally fully melted from my gutters and I can stop worrying about leaks.
    4. Thankful for enough of a cushion to make it thru the next few weeks of unemployment.
    5. Thankful for some food stocked in the freezer that will also help with the above mentioned unemployment period.

  25. Yay for a lovely ski trip! We haven't skied this season, and it's our first time in probably 10 years. Weather hasn't worked out + now that Tahoe has snow, we were in New Zealand.
    1) Grateful that "the big trip", bucket list/20th anniversary/50th birthday event wildly exceeded all of our expectations. Like, so, so much. It was incredible. (For anyone wondering, we hiked the Milford Track on the South Island of New Zealand, in Fiordland National Park. 80% of New Zealand is uninhabited, so the entire place is amazing, but this in particular was mind blowing.)
    2) That this trip reminded us of how compatible we are. We already have more adventures underway in discussion. We LOVED the time planning the trip, training for the trip, watching videos preparing for the trip, and just generally having so much time together. Becoming an empty nester is a little scary - will we still like each other, after all of this focus on parenting? It was so nice to be reassured.
    3) That my parents flew in & celebrated DS19->20's birthday, which we missed by a day. They have a goal of visiting all 4 grandsons in 2026, and DS20 was the first on the list! They had a fabulous time, and my mom did an endless sea of laundry before we got home. We also got a chance to spend a little time together, as they also wanted to do a belated 50th birthday for me.
    4) For DH, for hiking 3 days with a small bottle of champagne, cards from the kids, and a cookie to give to me at the summit on my actual birthday. Not sure he's going to top that at any point in the future!
    5) That all of our travel logistics went really smoothly. It's a long trip, and I'm grateful that all of our flights were on time, we had pretty good (although chilly) weather, and everything worked out really well.

  26. Kristen, I just watched the women's slalom event on the Olympics last night, and a very few of them wiped out, probably going *at least* 60-70 miles/hour when it happened (guessing).....I couldn't help but say "ooof!!" out loud. Lol. ( I was the only one watching, ha ha). I'm glad you escaped injury! And yay to Mikaela Shiffrin for winning the gold! (apologies if I misspelled her name!).
    My thankfuls.....
    - that I only have 10 more months until I retire.
    - that I grew up watching the Olympics, and still look forward to watching it. I remember watching Olga Korbut set the gymnastics world on fire, and Apollo Ohno win for the US in speed skating (again, apologies if names are misspelled). I watched before snowboarding was a thing. 🙂 I'm not much of a sports fan, except when the Olympics are on.:-)
    - for my husband, who takes care of so many things that would be difficult for me to take care of, like dropping our son off (and picking him up) to drumline practice. His work schedule is so much more flexible than mine.
    - for my son, who has grown up into a kind, smart, creative, funny young man.
I am so very proud of him.
    - for Sumo mandarin oranges. Such a special treat this time of year. Lindsey in Alaska, I always think of you when I eat them.

  27. There is something so wonderful about your marvel over the power of sleep. I have always found sleep to be a mysterious and fascinating subject.
    - For my hiking buddy
    - For a nice weekend with my husband
    - For the Great Backyard Bird Count and all involved
    - For the time ahead of me
    - For the money to buy a separate bed from my husband and space to have it. It's a decision that I'd like to be temporary, but it has improved our sleep qualities and, as a result, interactions with one another so much since I've been working a shifted schedule.

    1. Seriously, it is amazing what sleep can do. I felt like trash after my shift on Tuesday, but then I managed to recharge overnight and I was fine going in on Wednesday!

  28. It IS really lovely to have a window for some natural light in a bathroom! And it's not as common as I would think it is. I'm so glad for the natural light in our main bathroom. I really enjoy it every day of the year!!

  29. Kristen, your speeds are WAY faster than most recreational skiers! I Heard a story on public radio that most good/ recreational downhill skiers average between 20-40 mph.
Maybe you missed your athletic calling ☺️

  30. PARDON MY CAPS LOCK BUT THE DRYER IS WORKING!! All I had to do was flip the fuse in the fuse box. FRUGAL....LOL. Especially when I thought I would have to buy a new to me dryer.

  31. I’m glad you had a good time on your ski trip and made it home safely. You got out just in time. Here in Reno we have been hammered with more snow over a couple of days than we have been in years. It’s a mess here in town but mostly us westerners are thankful for the snowpack in the mountains.

  32. Good health is always something to be thankful for!

    I’m thankful for/that …

    - My girls’ school is so close by especially when it’s 0 to 8 degrees with a windchill. We walked quickly to school since the truck couldn’t start this morning and quickly back home this afternoon.

    - Warm weather clothing. Wow! Did my eye feel like they were freezing.

    - I have family to celebrate the holidays with like Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year’s. It always makes it more fun when you have someone to share it with and it also motivates me to do more.

    - Good food like yummy lunch I get to eat when I volunteer on Wednesday s at church or the foods we’ve been cooking at home.

    - The chance to start each day new whenever we are ready.

  33. thankful for you. that you got home safe. that my zozo looks terrif in her senior picture that was taken yesterday. we had to go to the studio in queens ny. not so long on the subway. used a 25 dollar gift card we had for longhorn steak house. it was around 5 yrs old and still valid. we don't see that many longhorn in our travels. my son came along. he is a huge steak afficionado. it was a nice day for us.

    1. I just saw something about the avalanches before I left work! Also thankful Kristen was safe back home. Praying they find some survivors.

  34. forgot to mention that i can't decide whether to go to my 50th college reunion in april. i was not hugely popular. when i went to the first one everyone was in their usual clicks and i was uncomfortable, even though my 2 original friends whom i met my first weekend at school were there.

it is in macon, ga and i am afraid of the flashbacks from when my parents ( now both deceased) and my dog licorice was in the car. also i no longer drive and it would be hard to get around. the hubby would watch our kids but i would love to bring them all. of course kids would never leave our current pup buddy. it is all so complex. one of my college roomies is going with her hubby. she is kidless and we all saw her last year when we went to the white house. she watched buddy for us that day. am so confused about the whole thing.

  35. I'm thankful for this group and getting to read what you're all thankful for! I'm thankful that you're all so encouraging of each other!

  36. 1 - raise of almost 7% - bonus (not to sound ungrateful) was a bit light IMHO given I'm still carrying 95% of my teams load. But I will say I am able to take time off when need be for appointments. Dad is pushing into his late 80s, still pretty independent, but sibling and I divide and conquer re: medical appointments.
2 - the two latest feline additions to our home. Adult cat is getting better at accepting them but we're not to the point adult cat can be with them unsupervised. After the heartbreaking decision to euthanize our 4 1/2 cat, the new additions bring happiness.
3 - due to #2, I am in shape for spring yard/garden work
4 - able to be an ear for friends - one of whom has had tough health issues as of late.
5 - for finally getting a decent neighbor. They'll tell us when they'll be gone and if anyone will be stopping by their house - including make/color of vehicle(s). We'll keep an eye out since we're home most of the time (better half is retired, I WFH). They are being good stewards of their rural property as we are.

  37. 1. That I was able to stand for all 5 hours of my cashier's shift without my leg hurting. Around here, Lidocaine patches are my biggest expense! I had a lot of pain trying to drive the car.
    2. Speaking of ...I paid off the car loan yesterday!!!!!! Saved a lot of interest since it was paid off early.
    3. Chocolate cake and Bluebell ice cream.
    4. Warm sunny days.
    5. Getting to see a former student who shopped at our store and seemed happy to see me, and who said she really misses my class. And hearing that she's doing well.

  38. Found some unclaimed money that was owed to my father, so sent the state of Oregon all the paperwork needed to claim it, should be a little over $100.00 which will go into the flooring fund

  39. I know this post is a strange place to ask this question, but it is recent and hopefully someone will see this and give me an answer. I have read several times here about the shaver for eliminating pills on sweaters. What was the name of the product that you recommend? Thanking you in advance.
