Rising food prices and a flour sale (or 20)
(this afternoon's bike ride)
I wrote an article for BlogHer.com about the impending 3% rise in food prices. Unlike my other BlogHer articles, this one hasn't been published here before, so if you want to know what I think about this topic, go read what I wrote!
Also, if you need to stock up on flour, check your sale ads this week. Gold Medal seems to be on sale all over the place...a 5 pound bag is $1.50 at Target, Shop-Rite, and Weis. This makes me think it must be a manufacturer's discount, and that means your grocery store may have it on sale as well. Check your flyers!
It looks like the unbleached variety is included in the sale, which is fabulous. I think the unbleached flour tastes better (and I also think it's better to not eat bleached stuff if you can help it!), so get the unbleached flour if you can.
Today's 365 post: This is how we roll

Our local Piggly Wiggly had flour, their brand, for $1 for a 5-lb. bag a couple of weeks ago. Considering your vast amount of baking each week, are you partial to brand names or will you buy store brands when the sales are good enough? I thought it was an amazing price and told my grandmother to stock up but she just can't imagine stocking up on more than you need of something. We don't use a lot of flour in our home so a couple of bags last us forever. Then again, there's only 2 of us!
My Safeway had it BOGO last week, so it was $1.48 each. I bought 6 bags, which should be enough for at least 6 months. Plus they also had King Arthur on sale which I paired with a coupon, to get some white whole wheat, which I prefer to the regular whole wheat a lot of the time. It was a good stock-up trip.
Here in NH - Shaw's has the Gold Medal unbleached for $1 a bag if you bought 10 items from a prescribed list (Betty Crocker, Gold Medal, General Mills, Pillsbury, Progresso). It was a great sale and if you used coupons you really saved a ton!
Speaking of rising prices, what's the deal with butter prices recently? In my area it's increased by about a third in the past couple of months. When is butter usually cheap(er)?
YES! Our local grocery store in Arizona, Bashas', has Gold Medal on sale for 99 cents this week! Limit is 2 and every member in our family has gone at least once 🙂
I liked your article. I was so boggled by your post today. I had to make sure it really was a Sunday.
Sales are great with coupons. You may want to consider a warehouse club member ship like Sam's club or Cost co. One has a rebate club where you can make your membership fee back plus more for 2% as a gift check. I love to use mine for Christmas. It is great to buy in bulk for things you use all the time. What a cute sweet girl like mine.
Kristin, I know that you are partial to Gold Medal flour ... was curious though if you've tried the stuff at Aldis (I'm sure you have) ... just asking because the one they FINALLY opened up here in South Florida was $1.19 for 5 lbs .. cheapest I've seen it in quite a while so got 2 bags since I'm not sure how the quality is ... all other stores have Gold or $1.59 to $1.99 each ... just can't justify it yet. Going over to read the article on food prices ... and they say no worries on inflation ... 🙁
In cali, albertson's has Gold Medal for 99 cents if you bought 10, but wal*mart price matches so I just showed them the ad and got it for 99cents. I didnt even have to buy 10.
Woohoo! I just got back from Waynes in NW Wisconsin, and it popped into my head while I was inthe meat department, so I rolled over and there it was! 2/$3, i bought 3 bags of regular and unbleached each! I'm so glad I read this the other day, otherwise I wouldn't have needed to venture down that aisle!
