Gold Medal Flour Sale Alert!

So, normally I don't do sale and deal alerts here, partially because other bloggers cover that really well, and partly because deal blogging doesn't really blow my hair back. Today, though, I'm making an exception because not one, but two grocery stores have Gold Medal flour on sale this week, and that reallllly blows my hair back! Gold Medal unbleached is my very favorite flour for baking.

Safeway, which is a nationwide chain, has 5 pound bags on sale for $1.29. The ad pictures the bleached variety, but Safeway's flour sales almost always include unbleached flour as well. I much prefer the unbleached flour for baking, so I plan to stop at Safeway and see if I can snag some.

If Safeway only has the bleached on sale, my next stop will be Superfresh, which has Gold Medal flour on sale. Their price is $1.50 for a 5 pound bag, and the Superfresh ad specifies that the unbleached variety is indeed included in the sale.

So, worst case scenario, I'll end up paying $1.50 for each bag, which is still a really awesome price (it's the best I could find at Christmas, in fact).

Edit: I just discovered that Weis Markets also has Gold Medal on sale for $1.50! My goodness, it's a happy week for flour shopping.

If you don't have a Safeway or Superfresh near you, don't be entirely discouraged. Many, many grocery stores tend to put flour on sale right before Easter, so peruse your local store flyers...you might be able to take advantage of a flour sale along with me.

  1. Yay, thanks! Unfortunately, the nearest Safeway is 30 miles away and Superfresh doesn't even exist in my world.. Paylow, however does and has it on sale for $1.68 a bag. Since I'm new to this, I don't know if this is as low as it will go. Do I drive the 30 miles, pay $1.68, or wait it out for a better local price, hmmmmmmmmm.

Regardless, thanks for the tip!!! Everytime I read TFG, I feel I get more and more tuned in to my spending and am saving more and more.

    1. Isn't it so true that just hanging out with frugal people makes you more frugal? It's like it just gets you into the frugal way of thinking! I find that to be true even for myself. 🙂

I say buy enough flour to make the 30 mile trip worth it. Any other errands you need to run there as well? Might as well make the most of the gas! $1.68 is a great price for a 5 pound bag.

      1. WoooHoooo!! My sister who works near a safeway store is gonna pick up my flour for me - $1.29 a bag!! So excited, have been buying cheap Aldi stuff - can't wait to taste the difference.

  2. My Kroger has Gold Medal on sale for $1.77 right now, but I'm not sure if it's just bleached. I bought three bags at the beginning of the month and accidentally bought all BLEACHED! Eek. Is it going to ruin my baked goods, or will they just not be quite as good?

    1. I'd just like to add my 2 cents - don't be afraid to try using whole wheat! It's SO much healthier and adds a wonderful flavor. If you start out by adding 1/2 cup to a recipe instead of the unbleached, you won't change your results except that you'll have pretty tan flecks in your bread/muffin/whatever, and you'll have boosted the nutritional value a bit. The more, the better!

  3. My Giant has Gold Medal flour on sale 2/$4. And then if you spend $20 on certain products (including Gold Medal flour), you get a $10 off coupon. That makes each bag essentially $1 when you buy 10. And that's just what I did last Saturday 🙂

  4. Giant (in Central PA, owned by the same peeps as Martins) had it on sale too this week AND I had a coupon! WOO HOO! I'm making bread this weekend with quiche & salad for the in-laws. Ever ready "Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day" by Jeff Hertzbert & Zoe Francois? IT IS AWESOME!!!! Yummy and easy!

  5. Wondering if any of these deals includes Whole Wheat flour? I'm about out and really need to stock up.

    1. I never see whole wheat on sale! But, I grind my whole wheat flour, so I don't look that hard. I might have missed seeing it.

  6. I don't have Safeway or Superfresh. I also don't mind using store brand for flour. What's so different about Gold Medal flour? I picked up a couple bags of Meijer brand flour for $1.25 this week (regular price).

  7. Great tip...thanks for passing it along...I am in charge of the Easter Bread this year...I had to go to a second Weis (a few miles apart)...the first one was all out of the unbleached.

  8. I'm near a Tom Thumb store which is owned by Safeway (Von's Stores as well) and usually has the same sales! I will have to check it out! Thanks!

  9. I'm 90% positive that this is a producer sale rather than a store sale. If I'm right than Gold Medal should be on sale (just about) everywhere. At my store all types of Gold Medal flour were on sale, including whole wheat. I bought 18 bags.

Emily, I don't know why Gold Medal is better but it is consistently rated so by Cook's Illustrated. I'd bet that they didn't include Meijer store brand in their tastings. I can't tell the difference so I buy whatever unbleached is least expensive.

Cate: bleached flour is a bit more fragile, owing to the extra chemical processing it is subjected to. My experience and what I read lead me to the conclusion that most people can't tell the difference.

    1. That's good! I'll continue to buy unbleached after this, but when I realized I'd bought three bags of bleached flour, I had visions of fallen loaves and other kitchen disasters...so I'm glad to hear that we might not even notice a difference!

  10. So, this really has nothing to do with flour... I just wanted to comment about how much I enjoy reading your blogs and how it's helping me make little changes for my life and my family 🙂 I'm proud to share that I've become more assertive about food waste, and shopped at the Salvation Army the other day, for the first time since college... and I found some really great deals. Thanks so much for sharing... your heart and your frugal ways 🙂

  11. Stop & Shop has the same deal where if you buy $20 worth at $2 a bag you get a $10 coupon off your next purchase. Unbleached is definitely included.

  12. By the way, Wal-mart (at least where we live) has had GM flour on sale for $1.50 for a couple weeks now--they just don't advertise it. I find that, most of the time, when I make a special trip to another store for a good sale, I get to Wal-mart to discover that they marked that item down that week as well, sometimes for less than the other sale price.

  13. Our military commissary has Gold Medal for $1.25 a bag, but has coupons (attached to the shelf) for an additional 20 cents off. Sorry civilians, they are military store only coupons, but just a tip for all you out there who have commissary privileges. (Another great sale at our commissary this week - 35 cents for yoplait yogurt, with a $3 off coupon if you buy 20...that makes it 20 cents per carton!)

  14. Kristen-

I know you are not big on coupons but for as much flour as you go through, the Gold Medal flour coupons that they release every couple of months can help you save big on this. The beginning of March they had $.75/1 Gold Medal flour printable coupons so I was able to get 8 5 lb bags for $.75 each (they were on rollback at Walmart for $1.50), you could have gotten your flour with the Safeway deal for $.54 a bag. Just an idea for you.

    1. I was thinking something similar. I almost hate to add this but we very occasionally even see Gold Medal flour for, dare I say, $.99! I used the $.75/1 coupons from coupons.com and paid $.24 a bag. If and when I see more coupons I will be sure to let you know next time!

      1. I used to be able to find it for $.99 around here, but it's been a while since that's happened. And yes, I do love it when they offer the printable flour coupons...I'm totally coupon queen when it comes to stuff like that. lol

  15. SCORE! Just got back from Safeway and got 2 bags of GM unbleached for $1.29 and got a rain check for 5 more! I'm so excited to try your favorite flour! Also got 5 boxes of Kellogs Raisin Bran for $1.88! Yay! Thank you!

  16. Does anyone know how long flour lasts? I am a newlywed, so no kiddos - but I'd love to stock up if I knew it would still be good for awhile - here in AZ - Fry's (aka kroger) has this on sale for 99 cents a bag!

    1. How long it lasts depends on how well you protect it.

Flour needs to be protected from bugs, moisture, and bag breakage. So it'll last about forever in the freezer but perhaps only a couple weeks if you live in hot, humid, buggy New Orleans and you leave a bag in its original packaging in your garage in August.

      1. I've kept mine around for 6 months or so before, just on a shelf in my laundry room. WilliamB is right, though...the freezer is perfect. If you don't have space to keep it in your freezer, freeze it for 24 hours, just to make sure no bugs will appear, and then store it in a cool dry place.

  17. Target was selling 5 lb bags of unbleached flour for $1.27 as well, but it was their store brand. This was last Saturday.
