Food Waste Photo-9.7

Actually, there are two. I am ashamed.
(However, is this not a beautiful picture?? I love the light!)

(this one, not so much. I waited until too late at night to take it.)

Oh, the depths to which I've fallen after my no-waste week!

The first picture is a bit of lettuce, and some cilantro(I know, shocking!). And then the next picture has some leftover sauce from a recipe I tried. Somehow, I ended up with way more sauce than chicken and rice, and I just wasn't motivated enough to eat it before it went bad. Then there's some leftover green beans, and in the top container is a bit of cilantro. I'd salvaged it from the stuff in the first picture, totally meaning to use it. But, I obviously didn't manage that!

This week, my husband will be on a trip, so it'll be just me and the kids. My goal is to have us eat up all our food before we leave for a family vacation on Saturday, and I think it's totally do-able. 🙂

  1. Oh please don't feel ashamed; your blog is an inspiration to many. You must keep in mind that most people (in the UK anyway) throw away about one third of the food they buy each week. Look at you - a few leaves, a bit of salad, some beans and sauce. Honestly, that is nothing compared to most.

    Don't feel ashamed, feel PROUD.
I'm not belittling your feelings, but I know how I beat myself up too about having waste in the bin, and all these lovely people rally around and help me gain perspective on things.

So smile, Mother Nature is breathing a huge sigh of relief because there are people like you in the world who care.

have a great week - you know? I think you are going to succeed this week too - I can just feel it 🙂

  2. Oh, there is nothing that stretches the food budget or encourages me to clean out the fridge (via dinner, that is) more than when my husband travels. It's like the silver lining of being without him! 😉

  3. Have you considered getting a cilantro plant? They are quite cheap here in Texas, even when bough from whole foods- maybe $2? I just notice that you refer to the problem of cilantro going bad quite often, and the fresh stuff is better anyway. Saves money, better quality, no waste!

  4. Sophia, do you have trouble with your cilantro going to seed? I've tried growing some before, but it went to seed so fast, I got frustrated with it.

I'm certainly willing to give it a try again, though. I'm to the point where I almost hate to buy cilantro because I know I'm not going to manage to use it all.

  5. I've never had any trouble with it, but I bought mine from Whole Foods in the middle of the summer, and it was already a good 8 inches tall, and thick and bushy. I just transplanted it to a flower pot that I keep on the balcony of my apartment, and it grows like a weed! Of course, I'm in Texas, so it may just be the weather here.
