Food Waste Friday | Who is awesome?

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.

Me.

Me.

(At least, for the moment.)

(In the area of food waste.)

(This is a very limited sort of awesome.)

I have no food waste to report this week.

Shweet.

I almost thought I'd have to waste some parsley, but I made some tomato sauce last night, and I stirred in the last of the parsley.

Of course, a no-waste week makes for a boring post, so here's a picture of some grape jelly I made last night.

It's made from reconstituted grape juice, so don't be too impressed. You could so make some yourself! It's super easy.

Oh! Lisey and I did bake, but we were babysitting my niece last night, so she and I did not get a post up as planned. We're going to try to get that done tonight, so be sure to visit us over at Baking With Lisey tomorrow!

  1. I concur - 'awesome'...although that's not a common word over here...so let's go with 'outstanding'!
No waste for me...a random banana thought it was going to get the better of me...but I spotted it and photographed it - of course! I've gone vegetarian this week and took a rather unusual butternut squash photo earlier this week overseen by the delectable Edward Culled (aka - R-Patz)... perhaps fruit and veg will be my niche 🙂
Will be over at Lisey's tomorrow, if that photo's anything to go by. Can feel my tummy rumbling now!

  2. Congrats on no waste! My waste week is confounding to say the least. I suspect I'll do better next week though.

  3. Yup - you are awesome! I am less awesome but always hopeful. Not too shabby here for only being the second week out 🙂 Have a wonderful Friday, everyone.

  4. Good job on no food waste!! Wish I could say the same...oh and after I posted my FW I remembered I also tossed a banana, which is really rare for me, I usually freeze them.

  5. I'll confess to wasting two bran muffins.
I was so looking forward to Week 3 without waste. However, I had to bake off almost an entire batch of 6-week muffin batter because it had begun to get fuzzy. I scraped one or two muffin's worth of moldy batter off the top. The moldy batter went to the compost, and I baked the rest. They are now in the freezer.
It could have been oh, so much worse if I hadn't decided to have muffins for breakfast Wednesday.

  6. Definitely awesome! I only waste a little this week, but the exploding kombucha bottle in the fridge is not something I want to repeat anyway!

  7. Awesome!
I thought I was going to be awesome as well, but then a sneaky potato took away the awesomeness. Oh, well, maybe next week.

  8. Just a few partial veg failures here--a few lettuce leaves got slimy (we ate the rest of the head) and 1/4 of an avocado was beyond redemption (but we ate the rest). Happier!

  9. I love it when there is no waste. Unfortunatley I had 2 avocados go south. We still have a ton of produce but thankfully it still looks good. I'm hosting a brunch tomorrow for several families so I'll be able to use up a lot of it at one time.

  10. As usual when you have chickens nothing goes to waste. They love the cat food that the cats don't finish. We don't waste much anyway, but as I say when you have chickens - - -

    1. Ooo, great motivation to get chickens! I'd really like to, when we get a house with a bit more yard. We could probably fit a coop in our current yard, but it's literally 60'x20', with no fence. I'm not sure the neighbors would be happy with me, but the local stray cat probably would!

  11. I had to toss some canned black beans from a can I opened a few days ago - they'd gotten slimey!

I'm proud of one way I used up some bread this week, though. I was intending to make sub bread for meatball subs, but on the second rising I accidentally left the oven on instead of just turning it on for one minute to warm up and help everything rise well. So the bread was a bit too dense for use as sub bread. I tore it all up, dried it out, and it's ready to be made into bread pudding for breakfast tomorrow morning!

I also used up some brown rice in fried rice for lunch today and rice pudding that just finished baking. I'm planning to freeze some lentil chili - there's just too much for me to eat in the next day or two, but it does freeze well.

I'm going to have to toss about 1/3 c. chopped broccoli. It wasn't great fresh broccoli, it was OK steamed, it was tasty in broccoli cheese soup, but I couldn't quite fit all the broccoli in the soup.

I had to toss some yogurt earlier this week. One container had about 3/4 of c. of plain yogurt left in it, but it had somehow gotten pushed to the back of our yogurt shelf, so it was actually stinking up the whole fridge! We pulled everything out trying to figure out what smelled so awful, and finally found it. I'm usually good about rotating stuff, so I'm not sure how it ended up where it did...

  12. Yay for being awesome! I also have no food waste to report. However, I have quite a bit of food in the fridge that really needs to be used quickly. If not, I will have an embarassing amount of waste to report next week.

  13. Kristen, I am so excited to have no waste this week! It is a small victory, but it certainly doesn't feel small! I've always wanted to try making jam, jelly, or some type of fruit spread. If this is really easy, I might give it a go. Things that are quick and easy are doable. I got this amazingly easy no-cook ice cream recipe off the internet this week (no machine needed) and now we can have homemade ice cream all the time, that the kids can actually have a hand in. No stovetop! I love easy things that I can do on the fly. Thank you very much for sharing!

One more thing: does anyone know what to do with chestnuts? I know I should roast them, but is there a particular way to do it? I've got a bunch of them and I'm new to this (and they've been sitting for too long.) Thanks!

  14. No food waste again. I am still barely shopping and barely cooking from third trimester "morning sickness". Cooking and food smells ...ICK!

  15. I didn't clean out the fridge last night so no FWF post for me today. But I did compost a couple moldy onions and something else I can't remember earlier this week. But I'm pretty sure there aren't any science experiements in there, so we should be okay until I have time to do a thorough clean out.

  16. Great job on no waste! For the first time since joining Food Waste Friday, I had no waste. I also have no food ..... in the fridge anyways. Your jelly looks yummy. My jelly supply is dwindling except for the muscadine jam. My husband insisted I leave the hull and seeds in and make jam. The jam is still in the cabinet. It may be waste in a future post. My kids can't stand the seeds and hulls and truthfully, neither can I. This summer it's jelly!

    1. Could you heat it on low so you can strain it ...maybe use it as a topping, sauce or flavoring for something ...?? I've never had that kind, not sure what it tastes like.

  17. Waste:
About 15% of a whole small watermelon.

    Not My Fault:
Half a box of raspberries from a box given to me by someone cleaning out her fridge before a trip. No idea how long she'd had them .

    Needs Attention Soon:
I tried a recipe that clearly wasn't going to work out at all. I had my doubts to start with: step 1 was simmering the chix for 2 hrs, step 2 was to bake it in rice for 3-5 hrs. So I wasn't surprised when the chix was overcooked after step 1. No way was I going to execute step 2. So I have an overcooked chicken to use - it tastes fine but the texture is mealy. I made a Broccoli-Chix Timable (which used eldery broccoli, 2 day old duck eggs from a neighbor, the chix, and random grated cheese). I'd better use the rest or freeze it soon.

    1. Also wasted most of an orange that went dry before I could eat the last one from the gifted box.

I'm using the rest of the chix in Bean & Bay Soup (made with stock & skin from the Xmas ham), and Victorian Chix Soup (which will also use the last portobello mushroom). Both will likely be frozen for future lunches.

  18. Wow! Good job on no waste! It's my first time participating, but I think it's a great idea. Hopefully I will get down to no waste one of these weeks!

  19. There was some food waste for me this week... at a friends house I threw out his really, really bad lettuce. He gave me a bag of onions and I tossed one as I didn't want his soon to spoil onions taking my stuff with it. The rest seem okay, but seems they had gotten a bit wet from an orange or a pear or something in his fridge.

Also, I believe we tossed a bit of smoked sausage that I didn't like and no one else remembered existed. And when I made a recipe that called for two tablespoons of tomato paste, I forgot to put the rest of the contents into a bowl and put them into the fridge. It was a meal where I was doing too many things at once, and I forgot all about it and didn't see the can until the next day, so I tossed it. Felt bad about that one.

My son ate one of the bananas the other day and threw out half the banana for a small bad spot. I have to admit he verbally said something as he threw it out and I pulled it out of the trash and had to lecture him about next time get out a dull knife and cut it off or don't eat my bananas. Or something like that. I hate it when he wastes that much.

So not a bad week, I would say. I did manage to salvage a left over curried vegetable I made that no one liked much. I made it into what I will call chicken curried vegetable soup and wasn't too bad as a left over yesterday. So in a few days that should be gone, even if I am the only one who eats it. But I need to either freeze or eat the rest of the chili in the fridge, as it has been in there awhile. Been eating it about every other day but haven't finished it yet.

  20. I had to throw out an apple, but I think it was already sad-looking when I bought it... I just didn't notice because it was in the middle of the bag :/. Other than that, I've been pretty good this week!

  21. Just linked my first ever food waste friday post. Thanks Kristen for hosting Food Waste Friday's you have convicted me to change my habits in regards to this issue.

  22. I just wrote about this in response to another blog! How awesome to have found your site. It goes right along with my site. This Friday will be my very first Food Waste Friday post. I am anxious about it...It may be gross...
You know, I teach people every day about saving money when buying food and household items, but, I have been very lax in the saving what you buy section. Would you consider allowing me to link to your site every once in a while for my readers to enjoy your posts? I would list you as a blog contributor in my Tightwad Tips section.
