Just for fun...

Last evening, I heard an unusual sound, looked up, and saw a big green grasshopper in my house!

So, as I do whenever I see something like this, I called Joshua, who photographed him, caught him, and escorted him safely outdoors.

I'm not way into creepy-crawlies. But it was pretty neat to see this guy up close.

  1. This made me remember an incident with the family cat. She was allowed to roam around the back yard when we were out there. One day she walked up to me making an atypical mewing sound and I noticed something green in her mouth. I assumed she had gotten something stuck and wanted me to take it out. When I put out my hand she dropped a big grasshopper in it. She was so proud of herself for catching it.

  2. Big green grasshoppers are one of the few insectile creepy-crawlies that don't totally freak me out. I always try to relocate them because with two cats and a dog, they don't stand a chance in my house.

  3. Hi Kristen!
I noticed Joshua is using the ELPH camera you have in the picture. I have been thinking about purchasing one since you got yours. I was wondering if you have used the video recording feature any and if you would recommend this camera for that? Thanks

    1. Joshua has used the video recording feature, yes. It's simple to use and the video is decent quality. A professional film maker wouldn't be caught dead using it, probably, but if you want professional-looking video, you'd have to pay a lot more than $100.

  4. What a beautiful creature. We had a praying mantis on the porch this summer and we just all stared at it for a while...

    1. Yes praying mantis' are adorable, except the creepy feeling when its eyeballs stare straight at you. I find hoppers cute too.

  5. We currently have black crickets in our basement. My kids however are not so excited about them. They are actually scared of them even at the ages of 10 and 12! They don't even want to go the the basement to fetch anything for me in fear a cricket will jump on them. Loud things too, it sounds like a farmers field in my basement. "tweet tweet tweet" we are not sure how they are getting in.

  6. This is crazy, I discovered the same monster/alien insect in my flat two weeks ago, at 11PM on a Sunday night. I live in central Paris, France, on the 4th floor, so I'm no used to seeing bugs up here, but I did grew up in the suburbs in a house with a garden, so I'm comfortable with killing spiders or cockroaches or whatever, but this devil, green, 2.5 inches thing scared the hell out of me (did you know it can FLY?!) so I vacuumed it and sealed the vacuum tube thingy for a week. I'd never had a panic attack about a bug before but this mighty one got to me pretty bad. Mostly because I had never seen such a bug before so I didn't know what it did or what to do. You're lucky to have a caring husband!
