Food Waste Friday

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. I started doing this in March of 2008 to help motivate myself to use up my food instead of wasting it and it’s been very effective. Since it helped me so much, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.

Last week, I didn’t really end up going grocery shopping. My car was in the shop for two days (just maintenance work…nothing was wrong) and then we went away for our overnight as soon as I got my car back. This lack of shopping really helped us to clean out the fridge, and so I have no waste this week!

I don’t know if I’m the only one, but after a while I start to feel like I have kind of a backlog of food in my fridge, and it feels so nice to know that only fresh stuff is in there at the moment. Now, if only I can keep it up!

I can't tell you how proud I was when, out of the blue, my husband stated that he has noticed we aren't throwing away nearly as much food as we used to! We are much more cognizent of what we buy and make sure we're only buying the things we're REALLY going to eat! I hadn't told him about "Food Waste Fridays" or anything like that so I really felt a sense of accomplishment by his statement!

Yay! well done you. It feels great to produce zero food waste. I've been making my own bread for the past couple of weeks and it's producing food waste each week because it doesn't keep anywhere near as long as shop bought. Sigh.

My husband grabbed a bag of sugar snap peas to finish them off and after the first bite, he saw the others were moldy. Super gross. I can't believe they went bad so fast. All my other veggies have been in Debbie Meyer green bags (advertised on TV, I got them for free because my husband is a buyer for a store that sells them) and everything has stayed fresh long enough for me to use them up. (These ones were in the bag they came in, they were those packaged, pre-washed kind.) Wow, I guess next time I'll take them out of the bag and put them in the green bag. We haven't had any veggies go bad in ages so that was a shock.

I can see your header- I'm on good old Blogger!

Congrats Kristen, on your anniversary, as well as a no waste week. I find it works great to not grocery shop at all in terms of avoiding food waste. I seem to be able to do it once every month or two. Saves money too!

A so-so week for us, a bit of lettuce and leftover homemade banana bread (just a little bit).
