Food Waste Friday | Who is awesome?

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.

Me.

Me.

(At least, for the moment.)

(In the area of food waste.)

(This is a very limited sort of awesome.)

I have no food waste to report this week.

Shweet.

I almost thought I’d have to waste some parsley, but I made some tomato sauce last night, and I stirred in the last of the parsley.

Of course, a no-waste week makes for a boring post, so here’s a picture of some grape jelly I made last night.

It’s made from reconstituted grape juice, so don’t be too impressed. You could so make some yourself! It’s super easy.

Oh! Lisey and I did bake, but we were babysitting my niece last night, so she and I did not get a post up as planned. We’re going to try to get that done tonight, so be sure to visit us over at Baking With Lisey tomorrow!

I just wrote about this in response to another blog! How awesome to have found your site. It goes right along with my site. This Friday will be my very first Food Waste Friday post. I am anxious about it...It may be gross... You know, I teach people every day about saving money when buying food and household items, but, I have been very lax in the saving what you buy section. Would you consider allowing me to link to your site every once in a while for my readers to enjoy your posts? I would list you as a blog contributor in my Tightwad Tips section. Let me know your thoughts. Well, have a wonderful day! Patti

I had to throw out an apple, but I think it was already sad-looking when I bought it... I just didn't notice because it was in the middle of the bag :/. Other than that, I've been pretty good this week!

There was some food waste for me this week... at a friends house I threw out his really, really bad lettuce. He gave me a bag of onions and I tossed one as I didn't want his soon to spoil onions taking my stuff with it. The rest seem okay, but seems they had gotten a bit wet from an orange or a pear or something in his fridge.

Also, I believe we tossed a bit of smoked sausage that I didn't like and no one else remembered existed. And when I made a recipe that called for two tablespoons of tomato paste, I forgot to put the rest of the contents into a bowl and put them into the fridge. It was a meal where I was doing too many things at once, and I forgot all about it and didn't see the can until the next day, so I tossed it. Felt bad about that one.

My son ate one of the bananas the other day and threw out half the banana for a small bad spot. I have to admit he verbally said something as he threw it out and I pulled it out of the trash and had to lecture him about next time get out a dull knife and cut it off or don't eat my bananas. Or something like that. I hate it when he wastes that much.

So not a bad week, I would say. I did manage to salvage a left over curried vegetable I made that no one liked much. I made it into what I will call chicken curried vegetable soup and wasn't too bad as a left over yesterday. So in a few days that should be gone, even if I am the only one who eats it. But I need to either freeze or eat the rest of the chili in the fridge, as it has been in there awhile. Been eating it about every other day but haven't finished it yet.

Wow! Good job on no waste! It's my first time participating, but I think it's a great idea. Hopefully I will get down to no waste one of these weeks!
