What I Spent, What We Ate | Sick Week

Psst! Don't forget to place an order with Grove to get your free fall cleaning kit. The offer ends Sunday evening!

I had a nice menu all planned out for this week and then on Sunday night, I caught the crud from Mr. FG and Joshua.

My well-laid plans came gently crashing down.   😉

Also, the early-in-the-week grocery shopping plans didn't exactly work out either.

But, we made it through, and I'm on the mend (though still rather stuffy.   Good thing blogging doesn't require talking!)

What I Spent

FG groceries

Oohkay.   Here's how the shopping went:

My produce box came this week ($34).

I stopped at Costco (where I bought the bulbs I hate!) and spent $73.20 on coffee and frozen berries.

And I went to Aldi and spent $92.22.

That means my total for this week is $199.42.

I'm not at all surprised it's on the high side because A) I went to Costco and B) I bought more expensive foods this week for convenience because I was sick.

That is almost always cheaper than takeout, though, so I feel like I made the right choice.

What We Ate

I am relieved to say that we didn't end up getting takeout at all while I was sick, although Mr. FG ended up getting most of his work lunches out.

While that's not my favorite way to spend money, a lunch out for him is way less damaging to the budget than getting takeout for all six of us at dinner!

Monday

Mr. FG had a late meal at work, Joshua had eaten by the time he got home from work, and I wasn't hungry (too sick), so the three girls made some French toast for themselves.

Tuesday

I was up for easy cooking by Tuesday night, so I made chipped beef on toast.   And on the side we had sauteed green beans.

Wednesday

I finally made it out to Aldi, and I picked up two of their pre-marinated pork tenderloins.   I baked those, toasted English muffins, cut up some fruit, and called it a night.

Thursday

I made pizza subs.   Yes.   Pizza. And not on a Friday.   It just worked out better that way this week.

Friday

Since I'm obviously not making pizza, I think I'll make some hibachi chicken and shrimp.   My produce box gave me two zucchinis, so...

Hibachi Chicken and Shrimp

Here's to a better, healthier-feeling week!

  1. Ugh. I feel like there should be some kind of award for still getting dinner on the table for a bunch of people every night even when you have no appetite yourself and just want to crawl into bed for the night at 4 p.m. See: illness and pregnancy.

Sadly, such an award does not exist (perhaps I should create one). But still, hooray for you. And fingers crossed for good health to come . . .

    1. This is why I give myself gold stars. There are a lot of awards that should exist, but don't, and gold stars fill in very nicely. 😉

    2. I will include a quiet yoga posture/meditative moment for you and your family. I amazed how families like yours keep functioning when Life throws a curve-ball or three. For myself, i had a rather untoward event with Monday (Thanksgiving here in Vancouver, Canada) turkey dinner hat not only sent down a little too quickly but --- saw me in ER at St. Paul's Hospital, Tues morning in the A.M. where upon being send home returned early Wed. morning, admitted and that Wed. afternoon minor surgery performed and offending turkey pieces' were removed from my esophagus. And, as a bonus of sorts (sigh) in a 2 for 1 deal -- a stomach ulcer was detected. Medications' prescribed and i believe myself to be on the mend with prescriptions' & mostly light meals with Ensure protein drinks for back-up. I am resting comfortably in my state of semi-delirium -- prescribed med's and plenty of rest. A shout-out of praise to St. Paul's Hospital here in Vancouver BC. Thank-you for allowing me to share. And this bonus remark: Canada's health care is a little more positive than some candidates in your fine country suggest.

  2. Glad you're on the mend and that your tribe didn't 'starve' whilst you were unwell!

Around these parts we ate pretty well. Usually at the start of each month I write out a full months calendar of mdinner meals with planned lunch leftovers. This week I deviated greatly from that plan so my calendar looks more like a football play board...oh well.

Tonight is pizza with Caesar salad if the lettuce is still nice, LO apple crisp
Yesterday was oven BBQ chicken with baked beans and coleslaw, apple crisp too
Wednesday was breaded chicken, romemary FF (yes, from a bag), coleslaw and fruit
Tuesday we ate chicken sausage, barley pilaf, acorn squash and broccoli
Monday was spaghetti, spaghetti squash, meatballs and red sauce, garlic bread and cucumber slices with ranch
Sunday we had chicken bacon panini and squash lentil soup
And Saturday we ate maple Dijon salmon, couscous, and broccoli, and some applesauce

  3. Over the weekend I visited friends 10 hrs away and still am not back on track for meal planning, despite bringing home several bundles of happy pork of various cuts. Lessee what I can remember:

Tuesday: new restaurant I've been wanting to check out for months; sushi, dumplings, ginger chix soup - all very tasty.

Wednesday: shrimp, tomatoes, carrots, fruit smoothies.

Thursday: burgers (not even any buns; I really need to shop), celery (the last, sad, limp stalks; I desperately need to shop), homegrown watermelon, more smoothies.

Friday: smorgesborg (aka leftovers, aka clear the fridge) - Chinese Roast Pork-style chix, spaghetti & meat sauce, cauliflower(I really, really, desperately need to shop), more watermelon.

Saturday is so planned up that I may not have time to food plan, not to mention going through the freezer. Right now there's a lot of food but I'm not exactly sure what I have and I am sure that it is not easy to get to.

    1. The one upside of slacking on the grocery shopping here was that my fridge was in an impressively empty and clean state!

Hope your weekend trip was lovely.

      1. It was fantastic. Being in someone else's circus rather than my own, is very restful.

My fridge is impressively empty and clean as well. I expect it looks like SimplyBeingMum's ... the day after she goes shopping. ;-P

  4. Meals: beef with brown rice and peas; pork chop with leftover brown rice and peas; homemade chicken tenders with salad; chicken enchiladas with FG roasted carrots (love those!) and salad. We'll likely be eating leftover chicken tenders and enchiladas with other sides tonight and tomorrow.

We were visiting relatives in Michigan last weekend and my sister-in-law was amused that I wanted to go with her to Aldi (we don't have them here, and I explained that the blogs I read raved about it all the time).

  5. Bravo for cooking some nice stuff while you were sick!

    This week we ate:

Monday: Nachos. Easy, quick, and delicious. I like to top mine with a savory yogurt sauce to mimic that Velveeta-esque texture of nacho cheese without the calories. It really works!

Tuesday: The plan was for sweet and sour chicken, but that was way too involved for me. So we tried to do pulled pork sweet potatoes. But surprise! We were out of pulled pork, so I used some dark meat chicken from the freezer. It just wasn't the same. Womp womp. Looks like I'm making pulled pork this weekend!

Wednesday: I tried to make Mr. Picky Pincher's Salisbury steak. We've been debating what exactly went wrong, but the food ended up being inedibly salty (my bet is that *someone* mistakenly wrote one TABLESPOON of salt instead of one TEASPOON of salt). Anyway, we ended up grabbing Jimmy John's instead.

Thursday: Since we were out of pulled pork, we couldn't make our pulled pork mac 'n' cheese as we planned, so I defrosted some chicken and make chicken adobo tacos. They were good!

Friday: I mercifully kept today simple. We'll reheat some frozen mix I made for French dip sandwiches. I got some crusty French bread last week for the sandwiches and we'll eat them with either apple slices, salad, or chips on the side.

  6. Monday - leftover spaghetti pie
Tuesday - a friend brought us a rotisserie chicken and sides to welcome baby
    Wednesday
Thursday-breakfast for dinner. Eggs, bacon, pumpkin pancakes and breakfast potatoes
Friday - not sure yet. Maybe tacos, pork tenderloin, or a frozen casserole.

  7. Two nights this week we had farm sausages (by the way, y'all, my pastured pork and chicken farmer is a woman) with cabbage and mashed potatoes, once fresh-cooked, once as leftovers.
We had pasta and sauce with a chopped salad.
We had frozen fish sticks with a side salad and fruit (I hate them, but my husband LOVES fish sticks, so once in a great while, I humor him)
Tonight might be chicken. It remains to be seen, but if so, it will probably be chicken with rice or homemade chicken tenders.
My grocery spending was a bit higher than I wanted, but it still came in under budget. That's good, because I'm about to contact a nearby farm to buy several cuts of grass-fed beef, and that will be a good-sized bill, so I need to stay under budget on other things.

  8. Glad to hear you are on the mend. We are all fighting off colds in my house too!

A very busy week for us so the meals were simple but at least they were eaten at home.

Monday: Tacos with all the fixings and a cold bean salad on the side. As much as we all love tacos I think the bean salad was the favorite part of the meal.

Tuesday: Homemade Chicken Soup and Bisquits

    Wednesday: Leftovers

Thursday: Pasta with a choice of Pesto or Marinara, Meatballs and Garlic Bread

Friday: French Bread Pizza and Salad

  9. Kristen - Glad you are feeling better !
Liz - congrats on the baby!

What a week it has been. No more hurricanes please!!!

Monday - Pork chops, baked sweet potatoes, green beans
Tuesday - Spaghetti with meatballs, garlic bread, salad
Wednesday - Beef stew, sweet potato biscuits
Thursday - Dinner out, Mexican food
Friday - No clue, am out of ideas at this point.

School is back in after 11 days out, hooray!!!

  10. Sorry you weren't feeling well, but glad you're on the mend. It's great that your girls took it upon themselves to make French toast. Here's a shout-out to kids in the kitchen!

We've had a busy and odd-schedule week. I've had 3 night meetings and my other half has been working a schedule which isn't his norm so it's been hit-and-miss with us at home.

Monday - Green Chile Chicken in the crockpot; hubs used it as nacho topping and I had dinner out due to work meeting.

Tuesday - I had another evening meeting after work but when I got home I used leftover green chile chicken and made a quesadilla with a side of fruit. Hubby picked up a bite to eat while on his shift.

Wednesday - Our usual trivia night. Hubby was working but I went with friends. Ordered a salad and when I went to pay learned that my friends picked up my tab.

Thursday - Again, another after work meeting, but last one for the week. At work we had a lunch & learn over the noon hour and there were 4 box lunches leftover. I took 2 home for dinner to split between 3 of us (college girl came home for the evening) and made popcorn as a filler.

Friday - I get to cook! Making a sausage and veggie skillet with a spinach salad on the side. Looking forward to a quiet evening (and meal) at home.

    Happy weekend everyone!

  11. Why don't you ever cook a roast in the crock pot or oven. That is an effortless meal , with some potatoes and carrots, and onions.. Then there are beef and noodles for leftovers, as well as sliced roast beef sandwiches for leftovers. My grocery just had a buy one get one Angus rump roast free on a sale. For $17.00 I got two roasts that will make some easy cooking and eating well for very reasonable price.

    1. My family isn't big into roast beef, but I do slow cook pork roasts for pulled pork, and I slow cook beef chuck roasts for beef au jus sandwiches and for BBQ beef. They do make for great, easy meals!

  12. I think we spent $94.19.... Sunday we had homemade hamburgers and seasoned fries. Monday was marinated chicken breasts with french green beans & fried potatoes, homemade apple pie with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Tuesday was goulash and a salad. Wednesday we had hard & soft tacos. Thursday was scrambled eggs, bacon & toast. I think tonight will be a marinated pork roast & haven't decided on the sides yet. Last week we paid for our third of a cow, so hopefully that will bring down our grocery total for quite a few months. I hate having to dish out all that money at once, but it saves so much in the long run!

  13. Okay, I miss having a family at home, because I love to cook. And my husband was out of town for work this week. He was home last night.

Monday: I made a pot of chicken noodle soup (with lots of vegetables), so I had a couple of bowls.
Tuesday: More chicken noodle soup, with a buttered hamburger bun. I hear snickers from y'all.
Wednesday: Peas and carrots, and a cheese sandwich. Peas & carrots might sound odd, but my husband doesn't like either one, so I have them when he's working elsewhere.
Thursday: Hubby's home! Beef steak, baked red potatoes, cauliflower. He had ice cream for dessert (I'm not into sweets).
Friday (tonight): Creamed chicken over either noodles or rice, and broccoli. There will be a banana cake, since my husband wasn't here to eat the bananas.

I need to plan ahead - he'll be gone all this coming week, home for the weekend, then gone the next week. I need to freeze dinners for myself!

  14. Wow. I'd be really upset if my husband couldn't/chose not to pack his own lunches when I was sick. It's not that hard. Any functioning adult should be able to pack his own lunch. Sad.

    1. It's not that; the problem is that he normally takes leftovers, and most of the meals we ate didn't work as leftovers. And since I hadn't gone grocery shopping, we didn't have stuff around to make alternative lunches either. Plus, he was recovering from the same crud I had, so he wasn't full of energy to go grocery shopping after work.

Mr. FG did successfully pack lunches when he was single, and he is happy to do it now as well; I just choose to help him out by putting lunches together for him and making a breakfast smoothie for him and for myself.

  15. It was a leftovery week here too, since I'm also sick.

Monday was Thanksgiving, so roast chicken with roasted potatoes, baked butternut squash, and spinach, with plum cake for dessert (my mum's not a fan of pumpkin pie)

Tuesday we had roasted zucchini and peppers with leftover venison over rice.

Wednesday I was out for dinner with a friend.

Thursday I made chicken noodle soup with the leftovers from Monday.

Friday we had roasted pasnips and apples with chestnuts and bacon over pasta, because I got stuck at work and it's both quick and seems indulgent.

  16. It was a crazy week--hooray for slow cookers! I would have been doomed without mine!

Saturday: Iowa Girl Eats' potsticker noodles

    Sunday: slow cooker maid-rites

Monday: slow cooker maid-rites, grape tomatoes, apple slices

Tuesday: pulled pork sandwiches, Parmesan ranch potato wedges

Wednesday: cheeseburger mac, roasted Brussels sprouts

    Thursday: spinach Alfredo pizza

    Friday: smorgasbord!

  17. I am still recovering and cannot lift anything heavy. I honestly could not tell you much about meals this week as we have scrambled along and done our best.

I send my best wishes to everyone who has been in hospital or unwell. It makes life with a family much more difficult.

  18. Hope you all are feeling better! We are currently paying off ~$600k in student loan debt and so we're always looking for ways to cut things out of our budget. Convenience food is really such a killer! But what can ya do when you are sick. Plus you are right-- most likely better than getting take out! Feel better soon!
