Want to win a slow cooker cookbook from America's Test Kitchen?
America's Test Kitchen just put out The Healthy Slow Cooker Revolution, a photo-filled cookbook comprised of lighter, healthier fare than you'd usually expect from a slow-cooker cookbook.

And because I am a lucky blogger, I got a review copy to try out, plus two to give away!
This book is the same size as the DIY cookbook and the 6-Ingredient cookbook, and like those two, it has tons of pictures. I'd say probably ⅔ of the recipes have accompanying full-color photos, which I love. Photos make it so much easier to pick out which recipes you'd want to try.
Most of the recipes in the book are for main dishes, such as soups, stews, slow-cooked meats, and so on. But there are also a few recipes for very unconventional slow-cooking...as it turns out, you can make brownies and cakes in your slow cooker by putting a loaf pan right inside!
Unfortunately, I have a super old, super cheap, super 90's Crock Pot, which is the vertical shape rather than the new oval shape, so I wasn't able to try out any of the "baking" recipes.
Honestly, since I have a functional oven, I'm more interested in non-baking sorts of recipes. But for someone who doesn't have an oven, the baking recipes could be super handy.
I opted instead to try out a shredded chicken taco recipe, because I pretty much can never ever eat too much Tex-Mex food.
I actually have a chicken taco recipe that we all love (a riff on a Cook's Illustrated recipe), but that one has a green sauce, so the red sauce here intrigued me.
The chicken tacos call for bone-in chicken breasts, and luckily, I happened to have some in the freezer.
A number of Cook's Illustrated/ATK recipes call for them, so when I happen to see them on sale, I stash some away for future use.
So, you salt and pepper the breasts, and then in the microwave, you combine oil, spices, and chipotle chili in adobo sauce.
This is in lieu of blooming the spices in a pan the way you would during stovetop cooking, and if you don't have a microwave, you could certainly just cook the spices and oil in a pan for a minute or two.
Then you mix the spices with tomato sauce, nestle the chicken into the sauce, and cook for three hours, or until the chicken breasts register 165 ° F.
Then all that's left is to remove the chicken from the sauce, let it cool a bit, shred it, and return it to the sauce.
The recipe also includes instructions for making a pineapple salsa, and in addition to that, I sliced avocado on top of my taco.
Because I add avocado to everything.
(Interestingly enough, all the recipes I bookmarked to try were either Tex-Mex or included avocado. I am nothing if not predictable.)
We also tried the tacos with toppings like shredded lettuce and cheese, and we actually thought that was more delicious than the pineapple salsa.
Pineapple salsa is awesome, but I think I prefer it on the side with chips rather than in my taco (Totally a matter of personal preference.)
I'll share the shredded chicken taco recipe in a separate post, hopefully tomorrow, but for now, I have a giveaway!

I love to make refried beans in my crock pot - so yummy and healthy.
I love to make red beans in my crockpot for red beans and rice, a traditional New Orleans Monday meal.
I love making slow-cooked pepper steak in the crockpot. It's a meal that's "fancy enough" to make my family ask if we're having company for dinner, but it's also easy enough to be for just us!
I have a recipe for hot fudge cake that I make in my slow cooker. It is amazing, especially over vanilla ice cream.
That sounds delicious. I have never "baked" in the crock-pot but now you have me thinking about trying it out.
Eggant Parmesan! One of our new favorite recipes, the same great taste as oven baked, minus all the oil.
We use our slow cooker a lot for cooking a whole chicken and then making homemade chicken broth. Yum! But we also love using it for soups and stews.
There are so many good uses for a crockpot. I love to make beans in mine, so I don't have to babysit them. But, I also like to use it to keep things warm, like chili, so that my family can eat it whenever they are hungry throughout the day. If I needed to pick a recipe though, I'd have to say my favorite thing to make in the crockpot is a Deer Roast, my BIL turned me onto the recipe. I used to not like venison, but this recipe is delicious and I cannot tell that I am eating a game meat. Very good indeed. 🙂
I use my (super old, super 90's) crock pot all the time. My current favourite thing to make is pulled-chicken sandwiches. Piled high on toasted kaiser buns and paired with a great salad is just a lovely meal. I am getting hungry now!!!
Tortilla soup and spaghetti are great using the crock pot!
Chili and pot roast (both ATK recipes, OF COURSE).
Any kind of chicken! Whole, thighs, drumsticks, breasts! I hated cooking them in the oven and then discovered how juicy, perfect ans effortless it was to use the crockpot!
I've never made anything I thought was excellent in my crockpot - until this week! I put in 4 chicken breasts and covered them in this sauce: 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup bottled salad dressing (I used balsamic vinaigrette), 1 packet taco seasoning, and 1 packet Hidden Valley Ranch. Mix the sauce in a measuring cup and pour over the chicken. It doesn't sound like much, but I promise it was the best chicken ever! I shredded it and we used it in tacos.
I love making pot roast in my slow cooker! There is nothing better than putting everything in the cooker Saturday am, completing all my chores and errands to come home to a house that smells sooo wonderful. It makes life in the kitchen easy since I don't have a lot of room to spread out.
The crockpot is wonderful during soccer and lacrosse seasons. Favorites are chicken noodle (or rice) soup, pulled pork, chicken taco, chili, and chicken and black beans.
Bread! And refried beans! So easy and so yummy.
I love making chili in my crockpot.
Hands down, italian beef. Sooo good.
My favorite thing to make in the crockpot is kalua pork. It only uses three ingredients (pork shoulder, sea salt, and liquid smoke) but tastes so good!
I'm still experimenting with my slow cooker. I've made meats, soups and stews in it. I did enjoy the stews.
Ooh, what a great give away, and the tacos looks delish! I've been on a pretty tight budget lately, so we have a pot of beans from the crock at least once a week. I change it up by adding in the leftovers from Saturday night's usual grill, and I am trying new types of beans. I didn't realize there were so many varieties - so good for you, too.
Cheesy tortilla soup! Definitely not "healthy" but oh so good!!
I've mostly used my crock-pot to make shredded chicken for tacos or bbq. I have yet to find that "favorite" recipe, but with baseball season soon approaching and four children playing, I think I am going to need to find some favorite recipes! 😉
Brisket.
One of my favorite things to make is vegetable stock. I throw all the bits, ends and peelings from various veggies in the freezer, then throw the whole thing in a slow cooker and let it go all day. A quick run through a sieve and voila, a beautiful vegetable stock! Although, the last thing I made in my slow cooker was carne guisada and it was all sorts of good. My slow cooker is one of the old school vertical ones too.
I love to cook roast...So tender coming from a crockpot.
Pulled pork... A spicy rub and some of the soda stream dr pepper-style concentrate work great!
Italian beef!!
Red beans and rice, Mexican chicken, pulled pork, baked potatoes and more! I'm actually talking to our MOPS group in April about slow cooker cooking so I would love a new resource to share with them!
Well, shoot, I can't think of a favorite family recipe because every time I cook *anything* in the crockpot my kids exclaim "crockpot! I love crockpot!" as if that were the dish itself. And every time I think that they're pulling my leg but no... they really do love anything I cook in the crockpot. Anyhoo, I think my own favorite recipe is the Southwestern Chicken because it's so darn easy (chicken breasts, jar of salsa, 2 cans of corn, 1 can of black beans) and yummy with homemade corn bread.
Chili, hands down. The flavors have all kinds of time to meld in that slow, steady heat. But I do like it for lots of other things, too.
I like making a whole chicken in my slow cooker. It's so easy~ just add some carrots, celery and onions and let it cook for the afternoon. Bonus: the broth is wonderful to save for chicken soup later in the week!
My favorite crockpot recipes are a variation on the crockpot lasagna from Eat Live Run, and a variation on chicken tortilla soup from Heather Likes Food.
I love the crockpot! Such a lifesaver!
I love making pulled pork in my crockpot. Easy and great for company!
It seems as like everyone else uses their crock-pot for healthy foods ....but I love cooking cheesecake in mine. It turns out beautiful.
I love chicken tacos. The chicken is falling apart and it has a great flavor.
turkey breast.
6-8 lb frozen breast thawed enough to get under the skin
1 packet Onion soup mix rubbed under the skin.
On low til it reaches temp. Moist every time!
It's so easy to make beans in the slow cooker! I use 2 c beans + 6 c water + 1 TB salt + red pepper flakes. Pinto beans, black beans and garbanzos (w/o red pepper) all work great! They cook in maybe 4-6 hours on high or overnight on low.
sesame beef with ginger! Yummy!
I use my slow cooker most for beans, stock and chili, but our favorite is slow cooked round steak with carmelized onions and roasted chilies. It gets tender and falls apart and I serve it on toasted rolls with a good melting cheese, like Monterey Jack. I think I found and and simplified a recipe from a Bobby Flay cookbook, from the library or I would check. Anyway, my husband loves it and asks for it often. Off to check to see if my library has the newest ATK cookbook and to find out how to make cheesecake in the slow cooker!
I just picked up the ATK Quick Family Cookbook from the library yesterday based on your previous recommendation and would LOVE to win the healthy slow cooker cookbook from them as well. (I would do more in the slow cooker, but I pretty much detest the canned mushroom soup, etc., that is called for in a number of slow cooker cookbooks).
BTW, your white sandwich bread recipe is AWESOME. Made it yesterday for the very first time and my husband texted me from work to say how fantastic his humble turkey sandwich was. He is very, very particular, so this was a huge compliment. Thank you for all you do!
Yay! That is so awesome to hear.
apple butter
I love to make pot roast in my crock-pot, but definitely need to try some new recipes. Those chicken tacos look yummy!
I cannot enter but must share my favourite slow cooker recipe!
http://simplybeingmum.com/2014/01/23/simple-slow-cooked-lasagne-recipe-a-reminder/
My favorite is french dips!
I love to use my slow cocker to make chicken taco bowls. They are inexpensive, simple to make, and always delicious!
Since I've been trying to stock the freezer before baby #2 arrives (2 weeks - eek!), chicken stock (ATK and Smitten Kitchen) has perking away in my crock pot (another 1990s one - with lovely blue flowers). But we just made posole (New Mexican pork and hominy stew) which was fantastic. Thanks for fantastic giveaway.
I'm boring and usually just make soups in the slow cooker. Would love some fresh inspiration!
I have two crockpots but I only make chili, spaghetti sauce and roasts... I NEED this book. My hubs is begging for more crockpot variety!
I love putting a pot roast in the crock pot before I leave for work and then coming home to wonderful smells and a no hassle dinner!!
I love making over night steel cut oats.
I use mine most for cooking a chicken carcass for broth. I also like crockpot mac and cheese for an easy homeschool lunch.
I love to make Spanish rice in my slow cooker. It says warm and moist.
I don't have a favorite thing to make in my slow cooker, because I just got it a year ago. I am having trouble finding recipes for the things I like to eat (mostly vegetarian, no red meat, etc.). That's why I need this cookbook!
I think you'd like this cookbook! Lots of vegetarian options.
Another good slow cooker vegetarian cookbook to look for is Gourmet Vegetarian Slow Cooker: Simple and Sophisticated Meals from Around the World by Lynn Alley. Her recipes are delicious and a staple in our home. I'm a huge fan of her Lentil Risotto from this book.
She has a collection of slow cooker cookbooks that I couldn't recommend more! They are a refreshing break from the typical soups, roasts and chilies that are typical of most slow cooker cookbooks.
Chili or Roast---both super easy and delicious 🙂
My favorite thing to make in my slow-cooker is black bean soup...from an America's Test Kitchen recipe, of course!
I love making chicken tacos in mine too! Our recipe calls for chicken thighs, frozen corn, black beans, and Rotel tomatoes with chilis along with taco seasoning and can go right from the freezer into the crockpot, which makes it perfect for weeknights.
I love using mine for turkey breast. I just used up the last of the leftover turkey to make a curried turkey sandwich spread that was fab!!!
Coca-Cola pulled pork is my favorite--so easy!
I have a Mexican Beef recipe that I like to make, but the thing I use it most often for is bone broth made from organic chicken bones and bits. Good for what ails you!
Cooking a whole chicken. No liquid of any kind. Just rub the chicken with herbs and spices and set on a bed of chopped onion. Then I have delicious, moist chicken for all kinds of other recipes, as well as eating as is. Yum!
While we use the crockpot for so many things, baked potatoes are one of my favorites! It makes for an easy Sunday lunch with leftover bits of meat, cheese, and veggies for toppings.
Chile con queso for parties, a whole chicken for the meat and broth for a lot of recipes.
I am so excited for this book! Pork roasts and chicken tacos are favorites in our house.
I use my crock pot at least once a week. My favorite meal that comes from the slow cooker is chili. There's nothing quite like coming home to a delicious smelling home with a hot meal waiting!
My All time favorites for the crock pot are Spaghetti Sauce and Baked Beans!!
Buffalo chicken soup. Not healthy, but oh so good!
My favorite dish to cook in my slow cooker is lasagna, which my husband loves!
I actually love to make baked potatoes in my crockpot! Just wrap them in tinfoil (add some butter and salt to tinfoil) wrap the and put in the cooker all day long on low.... They come out wonderful!!!
I love America's Test Kitchen! And my favorite crock pot meal is white bean chicken chili.:)
I love to make chicken soup/bone broth.
Pork Shoulder with a BBQ rub and some liquid smoke is nearly as good as "real" smoked pulled pork.
It's a tie between simple beans, and kalua pork.
We love making a good old fashioned roast with potatoes!
Pot roast...it makes its own gravy and makes the whole house smell homey and welcoming.
chicken & Dumplins
Our favorite slow cooker recipe is for pulled pork- we just made some this week and it is ohhhhh so tasty! I tried chocolate truffles in the slow cooker a while back, too. Turned out pretty darn decadent!
chicken chili ~ easy and healthy!
Stew Beef Chilli!
The Best!
I love to make a slow-cooker recipe I found long ago for Mediterranean-style roast with chickpeas and couscous. Mmm, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!
I love to make kalua pork, which is in no way healthy.
My favorite thing to make in my slow cooker is any freezer-to-slow cooker meal. 🙂 For Valentine's Day, we just made chocolate cake with fudgy sauce and it was awesome! Meatball soup is another good one, but we substitute stew-cut venison!
I use my slow cooker for all sorts of dry beans and a variety of soups, stews, and chilies.
The crockpot is wonderful in making chili!
I love making stock from roasted chickens and beef bones.
I make soy-ginger chicken thighs in the crockpot that my whole family loves!
Pizza casserole
I have an ancient slow cooker too, but it still works and I love using it. I use it for anything that needs lengthy simmering. I have a gas stove and, even with a flame tamer, it gets a bit hot. Also, one time I found a cat curled around the pot on the stove and the smell of singed tail hair in the kitchen! Stupid cat. 🙂 Specifically I love to make chili and soups. And I would dearly love a new slow cooker. BTW, I adore ATK. I listen to Christopher Kimball at night on my tablet. It does sometimes take me a few night to stay awake to hear the whole podcast. LOL!
I love making chili and soup but I've been known to throw a whole chicken or roast in there! I work 9 hours a day so coming home to food cooked is always a win in my book!
My family loves beef stew made in the slow cooker:)
I make all kinds of stuff in my crockpot, but I really enjoy making chicken and beef for tacos, casseroles, etc. The way they melt into the crockpot is just amazing.
I make a Crockpot Creole Chicken. You can make it mild or as spicy as you like. Put it over rice and some cornbread and it is a heavenly dish.
Hard to pick a favorite! We love a lot of things made in the slow cooker. But my recipe for Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes seems to get asked for a lot!
Chicken Tortilla Soup is a Slow cooker family favorite.
I have 2 crockpots so I can make a main dish like whole chicken or pot roast and a side like beans at the same time. Chicken cooks so much better in a crockpot!
Potato soup!!!! 🙂 Or roasts...or beef and noodles... I love my Crock-Pot!
Marinated Herbed Turkey Breast from a Taste of Home Test Kitchen Favorites Cookbook. So juicy & flavorful! You can't have too many crockpot recipes.
I love sing the crockpot for meatballs and soup. Anything that I can make ahead and keep warm. Would love some other recipes. I'm in a bit of a slump!
We can't get enough slow-cooker pulled pork.
My favorite thing to make in the slow cooker is pinto beans. I always make a large batch so I have plenty to freeze!
We like pot roast.
ATK is the best!!! Pot roast, hands down.
I have two that I love to make in the crock pot. Of course the first favorite is good old roast beef with potatoes and carrots. Our second favorite is a garlic chicken.
My daughter has fallen in love with the crock pot and making soup...yesterday was a delicious chicken enchilada. Basically anything that I don't need to cook first, like chicken, is a win-win for us in the crock pot. Also, I just borrowed and ATC cookbook from the library for our home-school co-op cooking class and I really like their format and writing style.
I like to make picadillo. Most of my old crockpot recipes cooking times have to be adjusted for the new crockpots.
I love my crockpot! Mostly I use my crockpot for roasts, beans or soup. I made pizza once and it turned out amazing!
I love making oatmeal in the crockpot overnight. Nothing like waking up to an already made breakfast!
We use the crockpot most consistently for venison stroganoff.
I don't have a favorite recipe, the handful of things I've made in my crockpot ended up tasting like the were made in a crockpot 🙁 . I'm not very creative in the kitchen (I do have the heart, just not the skills!) Having an ATK slow cooker cookbook would put me on the right track, I'd love some proven recipes.
I have two: tomato basil parmesan soup and Italian shredded beef. The cookbook looks great. I definitely prefer cooking with whole foods.
Pulled pork! So easy!
Split Pea soup, my go to soup for this winter. I can't get enough of it & a crock pot makes this soup so easy.
I think my favorite is Beef Panang Red Curry. Without the slow cooker, dishes like this take longer than I usually want to spend on dinner but with it, we have a "special" meal that takes almost no time 🙂
I love to make my "famous" (to my family) Chicken Corn Chowder.
I love to make BBQ pork for pulled pork sandwiches.
white chili ... so easy and yummy!
General Tso's Chicken with lots of veggies! My favorite right now!
Ham and potato soup ... crockpot steel cut oats ... lasagna ... whole chicken ... an assorted variety of soups and stews ... I love the fix-it-and-forget-it mindset. I've made cakes in my crockpot and haven't had to use a bread pan in it. I have 2 crockpots--an old 80's style (which I actually prefer for soups--AND it doesn't take up as much room on my kitchen counter) and a larger, newer, programmable oblong one. So I can have 2 crockpots going at once .... ha!
I love making soups in the slow cooker. My favorite is a rice soup.
I most often use my crock pot to make pork BBQ. Yum! I usually make a large batch and freeze it in individual portions. later I use it to make quesadillas, nachos, sandwiches, etc.
I don't use it much, except to keep things warm , like soup. I so want to learn some vegetarian recipes and new recipes for my kids , who are meat eaters 🙂
Thanks !
I was all primed to put in my two cents worth, and since the rules say to do so I guess I have to (roast, potatoes, carrots, celery, onions, completely overstuff the slow cooker, 18 hours on low, yum) but instead I'm distracted into finding out what kalua pork is and figuring out cheesecake.
Kalua pig/pork is a dish from Hawaii. The native Hawaiians would bury an entire pig in an underground pit and let it slow cook. They used heated rocks as the heat source. Salt for taste and over the hours it would get the smoky flavor. They would wrap it in banana and ti leaves and even wet burlap.
It's something I like to make/eat too. Super simple. Think pork shoulder, salt, and liquid smoke. The trick is low and slow.
It's served shredded like pulled pork. Hope that helps. (It's making me hungry.)
This is the recipe I use:
http://m.allrecipes.com/recipe/24035/kalua-pig-in-a-slow-cooker/
I just use coarse sea salt because I couldn't find Hawaiian sea salt. It's still amazing! I serve it with white rice and this macaroni salad:
http://m.allrecipes.com/recipe/81108/classic-macaroni-salad/
An amazing Hawaiian meal!
My favorite crockpot recipe is Chili!
I love making black beans and brown rice in my slow cookers. My four year old loves to make curried chicken. The slow cooker is a wonderful tool to let little ones help in the kitchen. He gets to put all the ingredients into the slow cooker and turn it on so he gets to make dinner for the family!
We use our slow cooker the most in the summer. It helps me make dinner or side dishes without heating up my kitchen. In the winter I would much rather turn on my stove or oven and have a warm toasty kitchen.
The crock-pot is my go to for roast beef and chili. I have been meaning to try one of those baking recipes but I am a traditional baker. I find that if something works, why change it. Although, Courtney F commented above about hot fudge cake so I am intrigued and considering changing my ways.
We love making Pot Roast in the Crock Pot. Chili, pulled pork and an asian pork with noodles dish. I am looking for some more go-to recipes since we have an almost 7 month old and both work outside the home.
We love chicken tortilla soup in the crock pot, and we often use it for a pork loin or something where I can get the meat going before church, then just have to make the sides when we get back, for a nice Sunday dinner. Would love to win a copy; thanks! (AND, thanks for your post laying out some of your favorites of the ATK cookbooks - I had no idea there were so many until recently, so it's good to have some hands-on reviews to sort through the options!)
I have a great recipe for crock pot sweet potatoes. They have molasses, maple syrup, cinnamon and other spices. YUM! Thanks!!
I love making baked beans in the slow cooker!! In our house though it gets used most for roasts and rabbits!! Nothing like nice fall off the bone roasted meat on a cold winters day!!
I use my crockpot no less than 3 times a week. My favorites in it are soups of any kind!
Chicken cordon blue - yum!
I love making any kind of soup in my slow cooker - taco soup is my favorite. I also love to use it to make shredded chicken that I can use in a ton of recipes!
I like my Cuban Chicken Fricassee, a national contest-winning recipe I found in the newspaper as a newlywed in Jacksonville, FL, oh, about forty-umpteen years ago! I've shared it many times, as everyone has loved it.
I'd like to have that one if you dont' mind sharing here or email? quilt938 (at) clear (dot) net (of course the at and dot are the actual symbols) nothing like a tried and true recipe!

My SO loves to make a recipe from his Mexican slow-cook cookbook with chicken breasts and hot peppers and onions. I'd like to have a more general-purpose slow-cooking cookbook. This sounds like a good one.
There's a delicious apple poppy seed pork recipe I love to make in my slow cooker. My husband also makes great chili! Would definitely help to have healthier recipes, though!
I cook beans in the slow cooker because I tend to get impatient when I cook them on the stovetop. Crunchy beans are not a good thing! I'd love to see what CI came up with for slow cooker recipes.
Chili in the crockpot is my favorite on these cold winter days 🙂
I make shredded chicken in my crockpot my families favorite 😊
Love ATK! Just made pulled chicken sandwiches last night in my slow cooker. It's one thing everyone in the family loves!
I love to make lemon chicken in the slow cooker. It has garlic, lemon, butter, chicken broth, etc. your brown it in the pan then put in the slow cooker for a few hours and it has the best texture and flavor. It's like pulled chicken. So yummy! Great in quesadillas and with any side. Yummy!
I like to make anything taco related in my slow cooker. Taco soup, barbacoa beef, pulled pork tacos. We're a taco loving family.
I have been using my crock pots a ton this winter! Favorites are chicken (whole or parts), soups, chili, etc. I would LOVE this cookbook!
Buffalo chicken! So easy. Just chicken and buffalo sauce. Then serve as salad, sandwich, or nachos. Add celery and ranch or blue cheese.

Baked potato soup. It's crazy easy to make and gives us a nice, warm supper on cold night like tonight!
BBQ ribs!

I enjoy bacon wrapped goose breast with potato, onion, peppers, and garlic in beef stock. The leftovers result in a great stew for lunch!
I love my crockpot for everything! I love coming home to dinner already cooked. Any soup and lemon pepper chicken and anything I can cook in it.
i love to use it to make homemade stock!
Pinto beans...a family favorite.
Every Christmas Eve for about 35 years I make posole in my crock pot. It is a family tradition, so yummy and so easy.
BBQ, but my hubby is not a fan (???!!!), so I am in the market for some other recipes.
Wow, that's a new one on me! I've never met someone who didn't like BBQ!
I love to make chili in mine and also pulled pork for sandwiches.
My favorite is a Coq au Vin recipe, but no one else in my family likes it, so I don't make it much. Probably taco seasoned chicken is what gets made the most.
I use my slow cooker a few times a week mainly for stews, soups, spaghetti sauce and beans! My family's fave recipe is slow cooker taco soup! I'd love to win the cookbook and try out new recipes. ATK recipes are so reliable!
I use my slow cooker all the time. Two recipes I make the most would be pulled pork and chicken stock.
I like it for turkey chili and a great lentil soup recipe. I really want to use it more and I need some inspiration! The chicken taco recipe sounds really good. 🙂
I like to make chicken taco meat. Chicken thighs, garlic, salsa, and chilis in adobo sauce. My family is always happy when they know I've got that in the crockpot before heading to work, and I'm happy knowing a delicious dinner is almost ready when I get home!
Triple Chocolate Mess!
I have two favorites to make in the crockpot - spicy pork tacos and green chicken enchilada filling.
Pulled pork is a fav in the crock pot
So this isn't my FAVORITE thing to eat- but I do love that I can put dried/soaked beans in the crockpot with spices and water at night and they come out as a delicious meal the next morning. My husband takes Beans and rice to work for lunches (he will top with salsa, greek yogurt, and any available greens), and we always make a huge pot, and make 10-12 lunches at a time. They freeze really well, and it means I don't have to think about lunch for him for a couple of weeks. Thank you for such a great give away!
My favorite thing to make is by far is old fashioned pot roast with potatoes and carrots. I have a big one going right now. I'm making this one to split between a friend of mine who is having a hard time and for my elderly neighbor. Nothing better to raise the spirit than a home cooked meal----and to share it!
My favorite thing to make in the slow cooker is shredded pork! either mexican-flavored or bbq, both are yummy and easy!
I love to make stew in my slow cooker. I use the brown gravy packet and just dump in the dry mix, plus stew meat already cubed from grocery store, potatoes, baby carrots, and then add water using the empty gravy packet. Dinner and only the crockpot and one plate and knife (from cutting potatoes) to wash! 🙂
Slow cooked beans.
Ribs! They're so easy in the slow cooker.
I love making things in my slow cooker (my favorite being pot roast) - but I tend to make the same things over and over again. Would love a copy of the ATK cookbook to throw some new ideas into the mix!
I can't enter the contest (Canadian!), but my favourite crock pot recipe is bbq back ribs. It's so simple and always a dinner winner. Makes the whole condo smell amazing too!
It's funny, I normally don't use the crock pot until the weekend, when I actually have time to make a more elaborate meal. Maybe it's because a tiny part of me was afraid to leave the crock pot running ALL DAY LONG while I was at work. Now that I'm expecting my first baby in a couple of weeks, I believe I'll be getting a LOT more use out of it.
I just got my first crockpot! Haven't cooked anything in it yet, I am sure this book is loaded with ideas and inspiration. Winning a copy would be awesome. Thanks!
I mostly make pulled pork but recently tried a red beans and rice ( minus the rice in the crockpot) dish that was awesome.
I am brand new to slow cooker cooking. So no favorites yet and hope to find several favorites in this cookbook! Thank you!
Pot Roast with potatoes and carrots!
I've made pot roast in the slow cooker for years, and basic chicken recipes. Recently I made two soups-kale and a delicious beef barley veggie. I use my slow cooker at least twice a week and am always on the lookout for good tried and true recipes.
I love my crockpots, I have four! I make pulled pork & brown beans with cornbread the most but use them for everything from roast chicken to fruit butters & yogurt.
I love making soup stock in my crockpot, letting it go for a full day till the bones are almost mush. It makes the absolute best stock! Then I use that to make beef or chicken pot pie and freeze a bunch for later. Since I cook for my elderly parents too, I like to cook large batches, so it works out great!
Love your site!
We are boring, I guess. We love to use the slow cooker for a typical roast with onion, carrots, potatoes, and celery.
Applesauce in the slow cooker is awesome.
I have a large slow cooker which I use for friend and family events. Being a hybrid of the midwest, Central Illinois and north Texas, I blended my two chili recipes into one which is not too sweet and not too spicy. Beans had to make it into the recipe to satisfy my "damn yankee" soul at much consternation to my Texan friends, but course ground beef tenderloin satisfied the Texan in me. We always said that chilis and stewes tasted better the second day, so the slow cooker gives the chili that extra flavor melding time and richness in the sauce.
I love to make soups in my crock pot. I so enjoy the wonderful smell of dinner cooking all afternoon. It is almost like being a kid and mom is making me dinner since I can smell it without being in the kitchen working on it.
My family loves the pulled pork I make in the crockpot! I love that super cheap tough cuts of meat can be made into 'to-die-for' dinners.
Oh! And, I love your blog!
I most often use the crockpot for roast, stew, or pepper steak. I love ATK books and need some new ideas!
I have a BBQ chicken or pork we all love from the crock pot. I find myself using my Dutch oven for crock pot recipes more often these days.
Well there are two that are great and one that was a newly wed staple. The first two are apple butter and apple sauce. When it comes to the third one it was a chicken stew that is really simple that I concocted myself which included 2 chicken breasts cut up, 2 cans of veggies/equivalent frozen/fresh, 2 cans chicken brother/cream of chicken soup, and spices to your taste. That was it. I used I think it was a 6 qt crockpot and just let it steep for the longest lowest setting. Super simple just dump in the ingredients and let er rip over night and worked nicely for a new couple.
my favorite thing to cook in the slow cooker is chili though I found a new love yesterday- roast! well I had a 1 lb piece of pork tenderloin I thawed out, added a roughly chopped onion, red potatoes(had 3), 1 lb baby carrots (the chunky ones), and dumped a jar of pepperoncini peppers with the juice - stems and all - on top and let cook. had a vinegar-y taste but not too strong and a bit of a kick from the peppers(pulled thestems out as I dished out of the crockpot). I got the idea of the pepperoncinis from one of the year of slowcooking blogs- Stephanie O'Dea's - she dumped them on a beef roast (that's delish too esp in crusty rolls with swiss and/ or mozzarella under the toaster/broiler) as well as with chicken breasts shredded (I always add onion too if I have it and leave it in big chunks)
but the chili recipe called for a lot of stovetop stirring so I cooked the meat/onion them dumped it all in the crockpot and it came out delicious every time. I basically followed the Wendy's chili recipe on topsecretrecipes.com and used rotel tomatoes for the green chilis and fresh tomatoes but would be delish probalbhy with the 'real deal' I just didn't have the real deal on hand and didnt' want a trip to the store when I had the canned goodies already
oops forgot to say - the only thing so far that hasn't done well for me in the crockpot has been pasta - tried a couple of pasta recipes and I just don't know my cooker well enough and hate checking and letting the heat out - but I don't like my pasta mushy or crunchy and the 2 hour range between cooking times allows for some failures for me. a friend made a good crockpot lasagna so maybe that's more forgiving and I may get that recipe and try it sometime...but as of now I haven't been successful with pasta in my slowcooker. I also don't use mine all the time - I only use it when I'm home or running errands because 1) I have a big dog and it's hard to keep stuff out of her reach and the crockpot has to be moved to a room with a door that shuts! and 2) I work 12 hour shifts and chili and a few soups are about the only thing I can leave cooking that long and even that's pushing it IMO. usually I do chili or something when I get off night shift so it can cook while I sleep. the roast yesterday was while I was home decluttering upstairs and could keep an eye on the dog!
I love being able to make fruit butters and sauces in the slow cooker. I also make batches of stew for my dogs. Two days of cooking chicken scraps and bones, and adding mixed vegetables, sweet potato, carrots, any leftovers, brown rice or oatmeal. I mix that with their dry food. I heat it up in the mornings, and they get a hot breakfast, too 🙂
I have a slow-cooker, still in the box. I really need to get inspired to use it by some great recipes. This book sounds excellent.
Hands down, my favorite thing to make in my slow cooker is apple sauce. That warm aroma makes the whole house feel cozy!
Chicken Taco Soup! yum!
I make a Taiwanese beef noodle soup in my crock pot. The beef turns out so tender and the soup is wonderful on a rainy day!
I love to make anything I can in my crock pot because it makes cooking while working so easy. But the one thing that I really like to do in my crock pot is green beans. I take a gallon bag from the freezer, put them in the crock pot with bacon or ham pieces and set it on low for 7 - 8 hours. The beans just taste so much better than boiling them on the stove.
My favorite thing to make in my slow cooker is actually caramelized onions - it takes longer but is totally hands off.
I have 2 favorites that I make in our crockpot.... #1 being pot roast with carrots, onions and potatoes. And #2 is homemade applesauce! YUMMY!

My favorite things to cook in the slow cooker are beans, roasts, pulled pork, and sometimes soups. I also love it because in this particular season of life, we participate in a lot of potlucks. I always have it with me.
Honey ribs! Yum!
I make veggie chili every week to pack in my lunches for work. My husband is sick of it but it's so easy, healthy, and affordable I can't resist.
I love to use my crockpot for roast, chili, and french onion soup. A crock pot has always been a necessary item in my kitchen. When my oven died, I had a go to and used my crock pot!
I love making baked potatoes in the crock pot - roll up clean, dry potatoes in foil & cook (no water) for 3-4 hours on high.
I love making chicken enchiladas in my slow cooker! It's changed my weeknight crazies to weeknight yummies!
I love cooking roast beef, potatoes, & carrots in my crockpot. Just put it all in the crockpot before I leave for work and it's fork tender when I get home. YUM!
Another fan of whole chicken here. I shred it all up to use in various dishes and salads and then make stock with the remains. Bonus, the cleanup is way easier than with the giant roasting pan.
I love making pot roast in my crockpot. It comes out so moist, and fall apart tender, and the juices are so flavorful for gravy.
Overnight stock and applesauce!

I love to make short rib tacos......ooh, or chicken tikka masala.
French lentil soup!
Simple - chuck roast with potatoes and carrots. Yum!
I love to make country style ribs in bbq sauce. They fall apart and are so delicious! I also love to make roast. If you use Alton Brown's recipe, once you take the meat out, you can use a stick blender on the "chunkies" right in the pot and make the most delicious sauce EVER. Also, my mom makes brisket in her large slow cooker/roaster, cooks it in soy sauce, then hand shreds the meat back in, and adds sliced mushrooms. It's a little on the salty side but it's SO GOOD with rice and beans! I keep thinking I should try other things, this thread is giving me ideas!
Best crockpot recipe: meat sauce (like bolgnese) for spaghetti. The whole family loves it.
I love making chickpea curry. It's easy to adapt to different dietary restrictions and is great for colder temperatures.

Since I'm from South Louisiana, I like to put beans with onions, garlic, celery, and/or bell pepper on to cook in my slow cooker most of all! Then, make rice and cornbread to go with it, as well as browning sausage to add last hour of cooking time. Sometimes I change it up and make taco beans with ground meat and taco seasonings.

My crock pot is my favorite appliance! I love pork chops and rice, baked beans or a whole chicken! Please, please pick me!!

Oh, I adore these ATK cookbooks. I have Pasta Revolution and Simple Weeknight favorites. Both are awesome! So, favorite thing (right now) to make in the slow cooker is pot roast. I made some last Sunday and "cheated" (by my opinion only) and used the McCormick Savory Pot Roast packet, but I bloomed that by adding it to some onions that were cooked in bacon fat, then added the water to deglaze the pan and dumped it over the roast and vegetables. Now I'm hungry...
I think chili is my all time favorite in the crock pot.
I need to use my crock pot more often than I do! But when I do, I have a fabulous recipe for barbeque chicken that the whole family loves. Have a blessed day!

Fav thing in the slow cooker - toss up between chili and chicken stock. Weird yes. Chili is such an easy throw together meal. And where would I be without all my homemade chicken stock? Both equally vital in this home.
Lemon chicken, taco soup, a whole roast chicken ( really! It was fantastic!) swiss steak, beef stew...the list is endless.
I like to make a breakfast, quinoa, bacon, eggs, and cheese dish in the slow cooker. I like to wake up to a nice breakfast.

One of my go-to crockpot recipes is a 4-ingredient TexMex shredded chicken recipe: 15 oz can diced tomatoes, one chopped onion, one package of taco seasoning, and two pounds of boneless chicken breast. Favorite thing to make is plain old roast beef. Maybe I need to branch out? 😉
My favorite and easy thing to make in a crock pot is BBQ chicken sliders. Put six boneless chicken breasts in the bottom of the crockpot and then dump a bottle of your BBQ sauce on top of the chicken breasts (Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce is the best!). I put a rub on a whole chicken or a big hunk of pork, let it sit overnight in the fridge, throw it in the crockpot and dump on some BBQ sauce, let it cook 6-7 hours on low - amazing on buns with coleslaw!
its a tie for me, between chili and chicken & rice soup.
We make a lot of roasts in our crockpot. I have made a chocolate lava cake that was delicious as well!
