Thankful Thursday | two more!
This week, I am thankful:
that after today, we're down to two weeks!
Yup, I only have two more weeks of full-time nursing. And for both of those weeks, my shifts are split up a bit, so this is actually my last week of three shifts in a row.
(Three shifts in a row is very practical to do, but also quite exhausting.)
There are also only two more weeks left in this class...so for the next class, I will not be working full-time. Yay!
In case you missed it, here's more about why I'm going part-time.
that my year of residency is officially over
Our cohort graduated this week, so we have officially shed the "new grad" label. Woohoo!

People say the first year of nursing is the most challenging, so I'm proud of us for making it through. 🙂
for my pal Brittany
She and I gave our cohort's graduation address together (address is too big of a word...it was just a few minutes!), and we talked about how we met four years ago, in one of our nursing pre-req classes.
We've been through pre-reqs and all of nursing school together, we worked on our unit as techs together, we did our first year of residency together, and now we've graduated residency together.

We are an unlikely pair, since I came to nursing after raising four kids and she came straight from high school, but I'm so glad we met each other and stayed friends all this time.
that September is gonna be here in about 3.5 weeks
To those of you dreading cool weather and a return to school, I apologize.
But I am eagerly anticipating cooler temperatures, and as you know, I've had no summer break from school. Soo, I will welcome September. I'll still be in school, but at least I'll be a little less sweaty.
for the wood floors in my house
If you had me pick any type of flooring in the world, I probably would choose oak hardwoods, honestly. So how lucky am I that my rental has them??

I love how easy they are to clean, and I love their simple look too.
Also, I am so grateful my rental has zero square inches of carpet. I am not a carpet fan.
that I am feeling 100% better now
One day this week, I woke up, did a workout, showered, and realized....oh, I feel hungry! Like a normal level of hungry!

I haven't felt my normal appetite in three weeks, honestly. So, I'm feeling appreciative of that sensation.
I don't know exactly what bug I got, but it must have been a bad one because I've never taken this long to get back to normal before.
for a rain-free parking garage
It was raining pretty hard one day this week when I got to work, and I thought about how nice it is to park in a garage that leads straight into the hospital.

No getting wet for me!
that yesterday was less wild at work
I had a rough first day this week, but yesterday was much more manageable, and I was so grateful! I like when I don't feel so rushed to get everything done.
Here's hoping today (day three) is also smooth. 🙂
for a green view from the break room
This is what I see as I eat my lunch, and I am appreciative!

Believe it or not, there is actually a town out there; it's just obscured by all the tree cover right now.
I live in a very tree-ful area. 😉

I, too, am grateful for intergenerational friendships, which seem to happen in my life most often with work colleagues.
- That I also have an amazing view both at home (forest) and work (town/mountain view from the 3rd floor).
- For AC. I cannot with the humidity, though I appreciate the rain.
- For my mindset going into this school year. I've been working on it and focusing on priorities.
- For a good week so far as I get back in the routine of this schedule.
One of my best friends is close to my mother's age (we met in yoga class), and I also have a friend in her fifties from work 🙂
Not intergenerational but a fun fact; my yoga teacher is close to my age and grew up just a couple of streets over from me. We likely crossed paths in the local playground as kids, and he was also friends with some of the kids on my street.
And think of all the intergenerational friendships we have here in the Commentariat! From those of us in our 70s on down, we represent many age groups!
@Sophie in Denmark
Neat!
A. Marie, yes, good point. Even here in our mini thread we come from different decades. I think these types of interactions are great for maintaining a well-rounded mind and heart. Grateful for (all of) you!
Yay Kristen!!! Congratulations 🙂 I wish you a lovely early morning walk with frost to celebrate your wrapping up residency & moving to part time status (you're going to have to wait awhile for the frost part of the walk 😉
I'm also very thankful to live in a very tree-ful (full?) area. Gotta love the Mid-Atlantic 🙂 The rest of my family skis and spends lots of time out west and all say that they miss trees while there.
I'm thankful for YouTube for all of the helpful recipes, the supportive community to know that we are all just fine being ourselves; and the enticing travel blogs that encourage us to spread our wanderings and learn more about the world and its people.
And you know I have to put in a library plug 😉 I'm going to enjoy using the free library pass for a railroad museum today.
Although I'm not a fan of summer heat, I really do love all of the local produce available now. It's so tasty and easy to be mostly vegetarian during summer.
Really pleased that our cats have settled back into a willingness to play nice. Our daughter and her kitty moved back in with us for a couple months and the rediscovered harmony is such a relief after a few weeks of kitty battles to be top cat!
Happy Thursday everyone 🙂
I had exploratory surgery this week and am so very grateful for the word “unremarkable” appearing so many times in the doctor’s notes. I am also incredibly grateful for the care I received at the hospital. I had a similar procedure 15 years ago and everyone single staff member was truly awful that time. I actually told the nurse who helped me use the restroom before I left this week that the day had healed some of the medical trauma I had from the way I was treated during the previous surgery experience. Everyone was so kind, gentle, and respectful this week and I am so thankful for that.
I'm glad you had a better hospital experience this time, and that you're recovering well in your unremarkable way 🙂 Having unkind care when one is ill really doesn't help with the healing process. Feel better soon!
Thank you!
I had the MEANEST OB nurses when I had my son in 1973. I was so happy to be a Mom! But could not WAIT to get out of that hospital..(they kept you 4 days back in 1973,where I lived.) The mean nurse made me get myself up out of bed the first time, NO assistance, to walk to bathroom, and I passed out cold, hit the floor hard..
The Nursery nurses would not let me keep my baby near me for very long before whisking him back to the nursery where they gave him bottles of WATER!
OhI could go on and on.
WhenI BECAME an OB nurse I made it a goal to make each birth as joyful and fulfilling as possible, and to yes, SPOIL those Moms .. in USA we do not give new Moms the time and help they need to recoup and to enjoy their birth experience.
Glad you got good NURSES this time!!!!
Both my births involved crummy nurses and doctors, too. I'm so glad you provided the care for your patients that you and I both deserved when we became mamas.
On the other hand, I had fantastic care delivering my son during Covid - every staff member was so kind and patient and, when she realised I was alone, one night shift nurse simply scooped up my unsleeping day old newborn and walked the halls with him all night between feeds so I could get some sleep after three days in labour. She was a real treasure.
Congrats on getting through the first year and going parttime!
Thankfuls:
1. I am thankful to my dad for telling me I seem more confident and articulate lately 🙂 We are also quite similar people, and there are things in see in him which I also see in myself (and some things with my mother as well).
2. I am also thankful for my dad for rushing back to get the keys for my apartment and then collecting my bag from lost property in the airport (kind of ironic after the compliment on confidence 😉 ).
3. Thankful in general for a good summer back home! I saw friends, went to the beach, the lake and I got to look after a kitty for a few days (which was a lot of fun for me!).
4. Thankful to Past Me for stocking the cupboard with food and putting bread in the freezer (less thankful to Past Me for leaving a general mess in the apartment lol).
5. Thankful that I got around to deep cleaning the oven. This was not a fun a job and I'm still cleaning the oven trays (I think they're called cookie sheets in the US), but at least the interior and oven door are done. And I am very thankful to whoever invented Pink Stuff; it was magic for getting grease off the oven door!
*a fun job!
Hi Sophie 🙂 Good on you for cleaning the oven; it can be a tough job. I'm thinking you might mean the oven rack rather than a cookie sheet being that you're listing parts of the oven. The racks are the slatted metal pieces that hold the solid cookie sheet and other dishes.
I've never known of Pink Stuff so I looked it up and I agree, it looks like a great product! Here are some links for those of you who are curious:
https://usa.thepinkstuff.com/
https://usa.thepinkstuff.com/pages/about-pink-stuff
Thanks Beth! I was thinking of the trays; I know they're not part of the oven but I wanted to clean them as well (and I also cleaned the racks!). The light at the end of the tunnel is in sight!
You inspired me to tackle my oven and stove too. It was a much easier job on my end, because I have a self-clean oven that uses a very high heat. However, I still have to unload everything, wipe out the oven before and after, and scrub the racks. I was so pleased to see my clean oven and stove this morning!
That's awesome! It was great waking up to a clean one for me as well. I forgot one can actually see through an oven door 😉
Haha, I have had that experience as well!
This week, I'm thankful that:
In spite of the wild swings in this summer's weather, we've been able to get in two 10-20 mile bike rides every week.
My favorite store's points program which allows me to score at least one free or cheap tank of gas every month. With prices up, this month wasn't free but $17.98 for 25 gallons is great!
After being fascinated with the Mug Library over at NCA, I went googling and discovered this map of Sidewalk Joy. We've already visited a Puzzle Swap and some Trinket boxes. Check out the map on this site for locations near you.
https://worldwidesidewalkjoy.com/mug-exchanges
I had sundae envy because everyone seems to be eating hot fudge sundaes lately, so I bought some premium ice cream and a can of whipped topping and made my favorite hot fudge recipe (easiest recipe ever!) and made multiple sundaes for the cost of one at an ice cream parlor and without standing in line.
Any chance you'd be willing to share your recipe for hot fudge topping?
Easy Hot Fudge Sauce
1 cup sugar
2 Tablespoons cornstarch
1 Tablespoon cocoa powder
1 cup water
In small saucepan stir sugar, cornstarch and cocoa together until blended. Stir in water. Cook over high heat and stir constantly until sauce thickens and comes to a boil. Continue stirring and boil 1 minute. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
Makes about 1 1/2 cups.
Substitutions or additions: I love peanut butter so I stir in a large scoop of creamy pb after removing from heat. The original recipe called for adding a tablespoon of butter and a teaspoon of vanilla but I forgot it so often, I never use it now.
Store in a covered glass bowl for a week if it lasts that long and warm in microwave for topping ice cream or anything else you enjoy covered in fudge. 😉
***store covered in refrigerator
Thank you!
That sounds delicious!
Good Morning to all! Kristen, Congratulations to you, Brittany, and your cohort! Skilled nurses are in short supply these days.
Thankfuls:
- to be sitting on my porch, drinking tea, and listening to the birds and crickets while I type this.
- for a good friend(s) - someone who really understands you, and who makes life immeasurably better.
-for free workouts online, on Instagram, and on youtube. I'm easing my way back into excercise, after a 3 month hiatus. But really in the last 18 months or so, life has gotten in the way of my workout routine. Hopefully this is the start of something consistent for the long haul.
-along those same lines, that school, September, and fall are around the bend. I'm a fellow summer dis-liker, and also do better when I have consistent work routine - for me that means school.
-for healthy and independent children.
Have a great day everyone!
I'm thankful we got to spend time with our daughter who lives 600 miles away last week.
I'm thankful for the home health nurse who visits my elderly mom. My immediate family does most of her care taking, and having the nurse weigh in on the medical issues and manage her meds relieved some of my/our burden. I'm also thankful for my sister who lives across the country now but deals with as much of the red tape as possible via phone/internet to help.
I'm perimenopausal and fighting to reverse some of the resulting health issues via HRT, diet and exercise. I'm thankful for the rise in awareness and treatment options for women (and we still need more)!
Seconding all this gratitude. Glad to hear that your family connections and situation sound solid amongst the challenges.
And YES to your comment about the awareness and treatment for perimenopause and beyond. I'm improving in many markers, but look around with heartbreak at many of my friends who can't sleep and deal with truly life-disrupting hormonal symptoms. Thank goodness it's improving in our society, and let's keep going.
thankful for you. congrats congrats congrats. you have accomplished so much. thankful that this weekend i get to go to exercise class at my local library. my library is undergoing another renovation and will be closed for a long time. boo hiss. the last one was 5 years ago. nyc sure knows how to waste money,
Gonna bundle all my thankfuls in expressing gratitude for safe return from a bucket list trip. My husband, son, and I traveled to Nova Scotia at the end of July and returned late on Tuesday. We saw a lot of the beautiful country, had really cool experiences, and enjoyed conversations with some lovely people. We made great memories including a successful whale watching trip on my birthday! Shout out to Elisabeth of the Commentariat who kindly answered my many questions and gave me excellent suggestions. If anyone has ever been interested in visiting this beautiful part of the world, I highly recommend it. It is a special place.
Awww. Thanks Molly <3
Kristen, I hope you're paying attention to this! You have a free place to stay when you come to Nova Scotia soon 🙂
Kristen, I endorse Elisabeth's suggestion! 🙂
If I ever travel out of NY State again, it'll be to the Canadian Maritimes: to Nova Scotia for the lively Celtic music culture on Cape Breton, and of course to PEI for the sake of Anne of Green Gables and her creator, Lucy Maud Montgomery. (Warning for those who may not know: LMM's life story may be even more complicated than Laura Ingalls Wilder's. I wish LMM had had the happy marriage she gave Anne and Gilbert, but, trust me, she didn't.)
We so enjoyed Cape Breton! Listening to Celtic music was a must for me and we found it in Mabou at the Red Shoe Pub. I doubt I'll ever get to do this, but would love to return some October for the Celtic Colours International Music Festival.
All of LMM's characters have pretty dull marriages and/or the husband is offscreen, so to speak, which I believe is due to her not knowing how to write a happy marriage. The plot twist with Leslie Moore in House of Dreams made me so mad when I was twelve - that was the first time I got angry at deus ex machina (not that I knew the term). It still annoys me, but I imagine part of it was Montgomery desperately wishing for an out from her terrible marriage, and divorce was not acceptable at the time.
A.Marie, have you read her journals? There is such a sad entry on her wedding day (and she went back and rewrote them later in life!):
'I had gone through the ceremony and the congratulations unflustered and unregretful. And now, when it was all over and I found myself sitting there by my husband’s side – my husband!- I felt a sudden horrible inrush of rebellion and despair. I wanted to be free! I felt like a prisoner- a hopeless prisoner… But it was too late – and the realization that it was too late fell over me like a black cloud of wretchedness. I sat at that gay bridal feast, in my white veil and orange blossoms, beside the man that I had married- and I was unhappy as I had ever been in my life.'
A very interesting write-up and analysis of LMM's sad romantic life here:
https://www.anneofgreengables.com/blog-posts/lucy-maud-montgomerys-varied-love-life
Sophie, thanks so much for that link! So fascinating and heartbreaking! BTW, my daughter is named Sophie and she spent her spring semester in 2025 in Copenhagen:) I visited for a week and loved it.
Oh yay! I wonder if we ever crossed paths! You're welcome for the link 🙂 LMM lived such a fascinating, if tragic life.
Your post just brought me sooo much JOY this morning! That photo of you, soo beautiful.. your vibrant energy , and all the excitement and accomplishment of your last fews years, just SHINE in that picture! BRAVO!!!!!!
I was around 40 when 12 hour shifts happened on my OB unit and all of my colleagues were busy Moms, including me; we had a busy OB unit that was so much fun,on our 7-3. 3-11 and 11-7 shifts that worked so WELL for all of us.. we suffered with the move to 12 hours shifts and I recall being ALWAYS exhausted.I went “PRN” at that point.. I could not do 3 full 12 hours shifts and have a life!! Good for you for cutting to 2.. and you still get your benefits!!!!
Happy to hear your health is up to speed, your first year is in the rear view mirror, and I know you have so much goodness up ahead!!
For seeing my son and DIL over the weekend, for tea, for my cats, for friendship, for my husband.
I'm thankful this week for:
My 79 year old dad had sinus surgery this week and is recovering very well
I thought the eye surgery I had may have made my eye even worse, but after weeks of healing...it's improving now! It may have worked!
We finally have had rain and a small break in the heat. I think the heat is back starting tomorrow, but this week has been a nice break.
My figs are ripening. Last year they never seemed to ripen. I had enough yesterday to make jam.
My DH had a birthday this past weekend and all the kids came for it. I know I'm not going to live right down the road from them forever, but it's nice during these few years that we have it.
Forgot my “thankfuls!”
1. SO thankful for my spouse. Celebrating my anniversary today and I cherish my spouse and the life we have built .I feel safe. And loved.I had a chaotic homelife growing up, and this calm and deep marriage is my biggest blessing. My foundation.
2. Thankful for an awesome sis in law and bro in law.We will be visiting them soon and it’s always one of the best weeks of my year! We cook together, hang on the porch together, play games, go to movies.. can’t wait. Also visit some museums and art galleries..wish I lived closer!
3.Grateful for some new exercises to help my cranky sholders! They are helping!
4. Thankful for my library.BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS make me happy.I love the calm quiet of the library, too.My college work study job was in a library: I typed those catalogue cards that no one remembers what they even are!!!!!
5. Grateful for just being alive. I am 73, pretty active, still, and healthy in general..I have outlived most of my female relatives, I try to take care of myself. Am thankful for all the info on nutrition self care etc that is available to help us live longer and feel better. (Dr.Greger’s books lately are choc full of useful info!)
Madeline, I'm almost 67 and I have fond memories of those cards!
And I am 77, and I had a work-study job filing those cards! I went on to become a librarian, so I have seen all the changes firsthand.
I’m thankful for the rain we got because it has been so dry lately. I’m also thankful for enough breaks in the rain to keep up my ten minutes a day gardening streak. Finally, I am thankful that I have the energy required to help my kids organize and redo their bedrooms. I am also thankful that I have ten more days of summer break left.
Thankful for:
-- Some cooler, less humid weather this week
-- Sitting on my deck right now enjoying the breeze, watching the world go by, and hearing the kids cheering at the nearby park during their daily camp program. Still in my jammies at 9:30 and not needing to be anywhere until 12:30. Ever grateful for retirement!
-- The great turnout at our neighborhood's National Night Out, along with the good food and conversations
-- Twelve plants I received from Buy Nothing and the free water that Mother Nature provided after we planted them
-- Free membership at two community fitness centers
-- Continued progress with physical therapy
This week I am thankful for…
• The opportunity to go on a mom/son trip again this year.
• An easy-going kid.
• My company hosting an “employees day out” at our local minor league baseball team. They hosted lunch, we had great seats, and my husband was able to take time off work to join me!
• My son’s club team tryouts went well and he made the team he wanted. He works hard at his sport and he made the top team again this year.
• My tomatoes! Last year we had a very small harvest, but this year our plants are producing well!
• Lots of little things: AC, good books, our CSA veggies, puppy snuggles, the woods behind our house, coffee in the morning
Thankful that former me installed multiple rv hook ups on this ranch. Between friends and family we have welcomed 75 horses, llamas, goats and 25 dogs.
We have vet school students also staying with us to help manage the barns. I will be so grateful when this wildfire season is behind us. This morning our iconic Timberline Lodge is under evacuation orders.
I have a cousin who randomly picks up stuff at municipal auctions and had just bought a triple high set of three large kennels. They are now housing chickens, ducks, Goats and dogs. I have 3 dog runs, we are also using our horse and livestock trailers as pens. Thankfully we have 15 acres of sheep fenced fields for the dogs to run in safely.
You're in Oregon too? I didn't know that Timberline was under evacuation orders but given this horrible horrible fire season I'm not surprised. None of the fires are close to me (Bend) but we are getting a lot of smoke from the fires in the region.
I was born in Bend! I have many friends and family in your area. My aunts live on the Deschutes.
I am in the coastal hills closest to Corvallis. We took in horses from my Eastern Oregon rodeo pals and my neighbor is helping with the reservation horses.
We set up 4 round pens in my uncles equipment shop for the latest horses. We are observing and doing vet checks.
Goodness, BGF, Noah's Ark has nothing on you! What a community of people and critters you have!
Hope the fires subside ASAP and that all is well once again.
What Fru-gal Lisa said, BGF. Fingers crossed for you and all your human and animal friends that this wildfire will be brought under control soon.
BGF, kudos on your continued care of humans and animals!
I drove up and back to Bend yesterday. It was a very real reality check to drive past the Sister’s rodeo grounds and see tent after tent to house the firefighters. I’m praying they all stay safe.
So far August temperatures have been horrible especially when you add in all the fires burning right now. I'm seriously looking forward to fall.
In a couple of months, or less, the flooring in my house will be replaced (except for the kitchen, laundry room, and office flooring which got replaced a few years ago. I'm looking forward to that although moving all the furniture will not be so much fun.
Under 7 months to retirement now. I will probably get a part time SIT DOWN job as I get bored very easily (the sit down part is that every job I've had since 2015 has been on my feet!!)
Knock on wood, the trigger finger debacle seems to be coming to a close. I'm having much less pain and the incision has finally healed.
I'm thankful for the many kind and patient people I've encountered at various businesses this week. It's been a hard and frustrating week in some respects and it has really helped to focus on the interactions I've had that have been positive.
For the 23 pounds of potatoes I harvested from my small potato plot (1 raised bed). They aren't a lot but they will all be delicious.
For the sunflowers blooming along the roadsides in our area. They really are such cheerful flowers.
For lots of free books and audiobooks from the library.
Today's thankfuls, which I posted yesterday at the NCA as "things that make me happy" (a distinction without a difference):
I took my 2010 Honda Element to my local Goodyear shop yesterday for her state inspection, an oil change, an alignment (for which I bought the 3-year package, given our Central NY potholes), and a check of the rattle underneath (which turned out to be only a loose heat shield, also courtesy of our Central NY potholes). So dear old Nellybelle will live to fight another day--and, I'm hoping, many more days. Long may she wave.
And I got back from Goodyear in time for a clam feast with Dr. Bestest Neighbor and his visiting niece and her husband. (Ms. BN, who does not care for bare naked clams, abstained.) Dr. BN got two bags of 50 pre-steamed Maine clams from Price Chopper (which excels in seafood), and the four of us ate till we could hold no more. Because the BNs are heading out today for a visit to their Lake Erie house, I was awarded custody of the leftover clams, which I have promised to make into a clam chowder before their return. (Ms. BN will eat chowder.)
Also, I'm starting to put stuff aside for the annual garage sale to be held by our local activist Catholic church in September. I'm completely done with having garage sales on my own behalf, and very happy to be able to donate to the sale at this church, which does excellent work in and for the immigrant community here.
Today I am thankful for:
My son's optimism while job-seeking. He's working now at a low-paying job, but he continues to look for work in his field. He has had four interviews now with the same company, so soon it's going to be an offer or a ding. But he just keeps going forward.
Feeling so much better after a vasovagal response to a blood donation. It was scary, and wiped me out for a day. My battery was drained. But I'm back to normal, and it feels so good.
Cooler temperatures -- I just wish the humidity would let up, too!
For my dishwasher. My kitchen was a mess this morning after I baked yesterday and was too tired to clean it up. This morning I loaded my efficient, quiet dishwasher and it's all better!
For my financial stability. I'm not rich, but I spent so much time in my life feeling desperate about money. It's so nice to be on an even keel.
I think the number of interviews companies do these days is just plain nuts and arrogance on the companies part. While I am staring down to not FT then retirement, part of me wants to apply for some jobs only to tell the company you're not worth MY time. Greed abounds is all I can say.
Good luck to your son.
This week I'm thankful:
* that I have enough vacation time that I could take off yesterday because I wasn't feeling well
* that hubby has taken such good care of me while I wasn't feeling well
* that I will be off work in time to ride with my daughter to my cousin's flooring store (about 50 miles away) so she can pick out new carpet
* that we may be able to visit with two of my aunts while we're in town looking for carpet (lots of my relatives all live in that same area)
* that our dog continues to be more energetic and have a better appetite since she started taking her anti-inflammatory medication
1. Speaking of trees, I have large oaks in my yard and I am so thankful for the cool shade they provide.
2. Although half of one tree got pulled down by a huge moving van that caught against its overhanging limbs last spring, the tree appears to have recovered and looks healthy. While the moving company was very ugly to me, I got the brush hauled away, someone to saw the limbs into logs, and the big logs given to anyone who would come get them. Then I was (finally) reimbursed for my expenses by Progressive Insurance Company. Thanks to state officials who looked up the moving company's records and found who carried their insurance; the moving company owner refused to tell me or to cooperate in any way. Methinks his insurance won't be renewed or possibly got cancelled or his premium raised once they found out how mean he was.
3. Some St Augustine grass is starting to grow in the front yard now that it is a bit less shady.
4. The AC is working a lot better now that the window was insulated and my bedroom is no longer insufferably hot.
5. Snuggles likes to lie down near me and be quiet whenever I read or work on the computer. Just like Miss Lucy Dog used to do when she was alive.
Two of my friends I met in my A&P classes are in their thirties (I'm 53). And one of my best friends is seventy years old. Yay for intergenerational friendships!
I am grateful for:
DS#3's continued improving strength. He got his staples out of his arm today and it's feeling some better.
The beautiful weather we've been having today.
That when DS#1 and DS#2 came back from their walk this morning, DS#2 was able to grab the Commodore when he tried to wiggle out the front door while DH and I were with DS#3 at an appointment. I suppose Clark thought we'd all abandoned him and was going to come find us.
Most, but not all, of last fortnight’s issues have been addressed one way or another. Took some work, though. I learned that “processing” is a more helpful word than “moping” as long as what one is doing isn’t actually moping. For the plant on my desk right behind my computer, because I’m looking at it all the time.
WilliamB, I'm glad to see someone else who casually uses the word "fortnight." I'm reminded of a cartoon I saw many years ago captioned "An English Cowboy's Lament," in which the cowboy was singing, "Been drunk for a fortnight..."
WilliamB, I'm glad you're doing a little better.
A.Marie, that reminds me of a line from a children's book I had about a British girl who remarks on how the American guests at her parents' bed-and-breakfast love the word fortnight, which I guess isn't as common in the US? The book said (from memory) 'They kept saying it and laughing. "Let's stay for days Let's stay for a fortnight!"'
If memory serves, fortnight was used in Little Women. My boss uses the term.
I didn't realise that fortnight wasn't in common use in the US. Now if we could only bring back sennight instead of week......
Grateful for:
-New colleagues that are doing well, friendly, and helpful
-Not stepping on the poisonous centipede that infiltrated the house 3 times this week
-Where I am at financially. We just sent about 20% of our stuff for the first moving shipment, and I have workable replacements for everything while it is in transition.
-Having more work than I can deal with sometimes. I've had lean times, and I know having the paycheck is nice even if there is stress right now.
-A spouse that has been so gracious through my snippy, confused moments as I continue to learn how to be a good human during an epoch of fatigue.
So happy that you are able to have the balance in your life that fewer shifts will bring!
Grateful:
1.To work at my son’s school. We have the same schedule!
2. For a long summer break!
3. That is rained today-we needed it and it broke the heat.
4. To be a couple weeks away from a finished kitchen that will now have a dishwasher! Woohoo.
5. For movie night with my son. He’s 14 and it’s a fun way to spend time together.
I am thankful this week for having (most of) the week off, even if I made basically no plans for it. Normally staying fully at home with limited pub trips and socialising makes me a bit sad after a while, but this week it seems I needed it!
I am thankful that my lil dog likes to snuggle me. She's been quite annoying in the heat (as she's bored) but she's still a treasure.
I am thankful for my body. It's been a bit suboptimal lately as I've had really low iron (still do) and some foot problems. But I went to the physio and also stripped part of the ceiling and did some bowling. Everything hurts now, but in a good way. It feels nice to be able to do things.
I am thankful for my family. My dad's had some scary news of late but is finally getting some treatment.
I am thankful for my flat, it's a lovely place.
Same!! I love hardwoodfloors too!! And I'm alsways admiring them in your photos. We have hardwood in about half our house, although our stain is a darker shade than yours.
