Thankful Thursday | mainly a placeholder
Hey guys!
I have an exam in 45 minutes (as of this typing), so I do not have time to do a full-on Thankful Thursday post right at this moment. And I have an appointment shortly after my exam.
But I know that you guys are used to sharing your lists here as a habit, so I didn't want to not post before I go!
I'll pop back in when I get a minute and fill out my list, but this way at least you all can do your usual routine. 🙂
And for now I'll say: I'm thankful that I have a lot of leeway in this class (my maternal/newborn/women's health class). I'm sitting at a 99.3%, so I do not feel a lot of pressure about this exam.
Ok! I'm off to my exam now...check back in later to hear about what I'm thankful for. 🙂

Annnnnd, I'm back!
This week, I am thankful:
for the busy discussion about gray hair yesterday
I see 199 comments as of this moment! You all had a lot to say, and I read every single comment.
Isn't this just such a fun thing about the internet? Back in pre-internet days, you could never have such big discussions from the comfort of your own home. 🙂
that we only have four more weeks of school
Ok, well, after lecture/exam review tomorrow, we have four more weeks left. The end is getting close!
After tomorrow, there are three projects, five exams, and two clinical shifts standing between me and summer break. I can do this.
that I got to see a c-section!
I've never had one myself, so I had never even observed one as a recipient.
But at my OB shift this week, I got to observe one, and it was fascinating to see.
As we were putting on all of our protective gear, there was a small part inside of me that wondered, "Will I feel faint?"
But nope. Not at ALL. As I said last week, I could have eaten a sandwich while observing (if it was hygienic to do so in a sterile OR. Ha.)
for the scenery on the way to the rural hospital
It is a small bummer that I am assigned to a rural hospital for my OB clinicals (less action there, typically), and it does require an hour drive there and back.
But since it is a rural hospital, the drive there is beautiful. I got to see the sun starting to rise on my way in, and on the way home, I saw a lovely sunset.

for a funny account Lisey shared with me
It's called Wander and Thrive and it is basically a parody of some of the judgy trad wife/alternative health accounts we have all seen on social media.
Lisey and I were laughing SO HARD.
It's on both Facebook and Instagram if you want a giggle. 😉
for Chiquita's short legs
I love how she's built a little like a Corgi. So cute!

I, too, have to be brief, because I have a 9 am appointment with my financial advisor/Genworth LTCI agent to discuss the upcoming astronomical hike in the LTCI premium. (Boo to Genworth, but thankful for my advisor/agent.)
I'm also thankful for birds--both the spring migrants and the regular feeder birds. In the past 24 hours, I've seen a pair of chickadees checking out my long-neglected wren house (come on in and raise a family, guys!) and a pair of cardinals at a feeder passing seeds from beak to beak (their courtship ritual). Live long and prosper, my feathered friends!
And I'm profoundly thankful that winter finally seems to be over, even here in Central NY. I just went wild and crazy and put the snow shovel away.
A couple of postscripts: First, re: the LTCI (long-term care insurance) premium spike, I should have said "upcoming threat of astronomical hike." My advisor/agent went over the Genworth paperwork with me, pointed out that the increase Genworth is asking for is highly unlikely to be what they'll actually get from NY State, and advised me to sit tight for the moment and not accept any of Genworth's buyout blandishments. (The policies DH and I bought for ourselves way back when were the Cadillacs of policies, and I'd probably be foolish to drop all those benefits just yet. But stay tuned.)
And re: Chiquita's short legs: I hope she isn't looking into the mirror and asking, "Do my short legs make my butt look big?" Chiquita, my dear, you're lovely just the way you are.
Her short legs are absolutely a win in my book. Heh.
@A. Marie, Clark's legs look shorter than they are because of all his floof, I think it's adorable.
@A. Marie,
Yesterday, I saw a crow chasing what appeared to be some sort of raptor across the street....I was in my car, driving home from work, when it happened *right in front of me* (but high enough in the air that there was no danger of them being hit by a car, thankfully). The raptor had something the crow REALLY wanted! It was so cool to watch!
@A. Marie,
I have seen so many woodpeckers and mockingbirds at my feeder this year, when I used to never see them, probably because of the hurricane, but my favorites are always the cardinals (and titmice), for some reason.
Also, we have a nest of Carolina wrens on our porch. I hope the snakes don't find out.
I am thankful for:
*the look on my one year old’s face as he ate his first ice cream sundae on a day when we both needed a little joy. As it turns out, watching a thrilled toddler eat ice cream brought joy to the people sitting near us in the restaurant, too!
*having a safe, cozy home that is all ours. Sometimes I get all up in my feels about not having a home as large/new/fancy as others, but then I look around at the world and realize it’s pretty amazing to have our little space to come home to every day.
*the weather has turned and Spring is here! Like Kristen, I am a big fan of sunshine, so beautiful sunny days are a thing to be grateful for indeed.
@Myndie from California, Experiencing the joy of a small child is a wonderful thing!
@Myndie from California, Love your small child joy.
We have an almost-five-year-old granddaughter and are seeing the joy she has in new discoveries, and they just make your day.
@Myndie from California, And now you get to [re]discover and [re]enjoy all those wonderful and joyous experiences with your child.
@Myndie from California, "I get all up in my feels" —such a great phrase that I may borrow it some time.
I know just what you mean about the amazement of having one's own space to come home to, especially here in California where the prices make one gasp for breath at times. Congratulations on owning your home!
good Luck on your exam!
I’m thankful for several nice mornings lately where my daughter and I have been able to walk to school. Those walks are one of my very favorite things.
I've a big thankful this week, and a few corallaries.
I'm thankful that my husband and son are okay after being hit by a car while out on a bike ride Saturday morning. So many bad things could have happened, but they walked away with cuts, abrasions, and bruising. My husband has some major bruises and cuts ( and maybe a fractured wrist and toe),but that's all.
Corollary:
* a pedestrian witnessed the accident
And stayed to talk to the police.
*an off-duty paramedic passed by in his truck right after it happened andstopped to check everyone out.
One of these people called 911, too.
*the driver of the car stopped. There are a lot of hit-and-runs in the world, and I'm so glad he stayed to talk to police and see what happened.
*the response of police and EMTs was fast and professional, and they were all so kind. See the lights of 6+ emergency vehicles when I arrived on the scene scared me, but they were all very helpful. (Most of the police cars were blocking the intersection where it happened.)
Also, at my work someone resigned unexpectedly, which left a gaping hole in the class schedule. Luckily, two colleagues volunteered to cover the classes. They are saints to take on a bunch of extra work with just a few weeks left to go. They put the students' needs above their own comfort. And otherwise, I would have been left teaching something I haven't looked at in decades. They are awesome.
I hope everyone has a good week!
Oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear of the accident, but also so glad that they are mostly ok.
@mbmom11, scary scary stuff like that certainly pumps up the thankful juice!
@mbmom11, so glad your family is okay. My DS18 was hit by a car while biking to school, back when he was in middle school. It was terrifying. The car did try to drive away, and another car blocked them in. The driver was so aggressive that one of the witnesses made my son get into his car with him until we could arrive. So glad you had so much help from bystanders.
@mbmom11, Oh my gosh! So glad they are okay, bike accidents are no joke!
@mbmom11, I add my relief to everyone else's that your DH and son are more or less OK, that so many Good Samaritans helped, and (especially) that the driver at fault didn't just try to speed off into the sunset. (See Hawaii Planner's comment.)
@mbmom11,
That is a very BIG something to be thankful about!
@Hawaii Planner,
Oh my goodness, your poor son! So glad he had people looking out for him.
@mbmom11, I read this with my heart in my mouth. So glad that your dear ones have escaped this situation with their lives. Love how everyone involved worked together to bring about a better outcome.
I am thankful for the beauty of spring. There are so many flowering trees, shrubs, bulbs, ground covers, etc. Between that and the green it is hard not to appreciate it.
I am thankful my mammogram results were fine. I am also thankful I changed the provider I use as the new (to me) place was so much better than the previous place.
I am thankful I started PT for a shoulder issue that has been bothering me for a while. I am using a small practice that is all hands on and no techs.
I am thankful for friends though so many of them are facing struggles lately. This is the time when the rubber meets the road and you show up.
I am thankful for family though it is difficult living far away from most of them. We seem to always be the ones that travel to visit and I am working to change that narrative. Hope springs eternal.
This day I am thankful for the energy & ability to declutter my house. It is overwhelming as I have accumulated a LOT of STUFF, but we are planning to move to be near our son’s family as soon as possible. Even after our home goes on the market next week I will keep going through items in our storage area to cull even more. Many things have been dropped off at charity shops , trashed, or are ready to list on FB Marketplace. I am also thankful for our realtor here who checks in with me often to make sure that I am “still vertical!” LOL. Thankful for 43 married years as of yesterday. DH & I have been through a LOT together - some good, some bad, & some downright ugly, but we have come through it all together.
@LDA, Happy Anniversary!
@LDA, Happy Anniversary!
@LDA, Our wedding anniversary was yesterday as well! (25 years). Congratulations!
@Karen A. and LDA,
Congratulations on your anniversaries! May you have many more happy years of honeymooning.
And LDA, you are an inspiration to me. I'm sure all the good stuff you gave to the charity shops will bless others. Now that I'm quarantined with pink eye, I am determined to cull out a lot of unnecessary items as well. Some day I may have to move, and the clutter will be an even worse problem then! Good luck on your project.....but take a day off and celebrate your anniversary!
@LDA, happy 43rd anniversary. My DH and I made it to 43.5, and we'd still be working on it if it hadn't been for Dr. Alzheimer's ghastly disease.
Good luck with your exam and appointment today, Kristen.
A heartfelt thankfulness for the final all-clear from my dear DH's surgeon one year after a scary, lengthy operation. I was so relieved that it took me a couple of days to fully let go of my anxiety over it.
A fun thankful that our DS is visiting from afar with our granddaughter. A great follow-up after a hospital visit.
So, Kristen.... What happened to that other 0.7% -- were you having an off day? Bad night's sleep? So not like you ... ;-}
I'm sorry!!! I'll try to step it up! 😉
@Kristen,
Oh, don't beat yourself up about a slightly lower score! You are a hard worker and a compassionate lady and you're already a blessing to the patients you see.
But as to being wished "good luck," Thomas Jefferson said that he was a great believer in (good) luck and found the harder he worked, the more he had of it. That describes you to a T.
@Fru-gal Lisa, Um... We were kidding....
Hahaha,yes. I might be a bit of an overachiever in school but I am not REMOTELY fussed about a 99.3%. lol
@JDinNM, Oh, I know...
@Kristen, and @JDinNM,
Lol!
Good luck on your exam Kristen! I hope it will be both successful and enjoyable.
This week I am thankful that although my relationship with one sibling is strained and painful, I am getting on really well with my other sibling
That a friend has moved to the place where I live and that we enjoy taking walks together in the weekends
That so far we're managing 2 hours walks without my knee hurting (genoarthrosis)
That the season for berries and soft fruits is around the corner
That I enjoy my work and feel valued
That I have many interests and are rarely bored
I love bleeding hearts so much.
Thankful for:
New Pup and Rescue Pup. Rescue Pup is adorable and so smart, and New Pup is the cutest, prettiest thing imaginable. The trainer I had and the staff at the vet's couldn't get over New Pup. And the trainer taught Rescue Pup "down" and "sit" in three minutes. He wanted to adopt Rescue Pup but we love him too much.
Having this cottage so I can comfortably house friends and family when it's not rented.
liking rainy weather by the ocean. Cozy inside.
Being able to turn down the full time job I applied for. I decided a full time 40 hour a week outside the home is a bad idea for now.
Being able to look forward to summer.
@Rose, that 40 hour work week plus a commute had me stressed out, just thinking of it on your behalf.
@Central Calif. Artist Jana, Me too! heh. Plus two puppies at home. Oh well, I know it's for the best but I felt unsure about it.
@Rose, yeah, turning down paid work feels kind of backward or upside down, especially after getting the interview, prepping for it, going there, and then nailing an offer. But you'll find something that you can do from home, either all or in part, because you have a ton of skills.
@Rose,
I feel the same way about bleeding hearts. I need to acquire some for my garden.
And yay you for turning down that job. You listened to your gut, always an important thing to do.
A lot on my list this week!
1) grateful for a fabulous spring break with the teens. We opted to squeeze in a last minute ski trip & the weather & lack of lines... we all skied in long sleeved tshirts. It was so much fun. It was our "last" spring break most likely, as DS18 will be in college next year.
2) there was a rather large rock fall & while it did impact the drive & slowed us down, it definitely could have been a lot worse.
3) I'm always eternally grateful for ski trips without injury. Especially as DS17 is a daredevil. I also got hit by a snowboarder (so mysterious, as there was literally no one else on this run) & while it bothered my neck, grateful for my helmet & generally feeling okay afterward.
4) DH & I were able to grab cocktails before dinner 2x, and had lovely "dates" before dinners.
5) Now that I'm home, grateful for my very large coffee mug. Which, is a funny story, because it was a gift from DS18's previous girlfriend & has an awkward Stranger Things design & his first/last name. I would have tossed it, but then realized it was the perfect size for my new coffee - I froth oat milk & combine with espresso & you need slightly more space than a standard mug. This one is perfect. Stranger Things & all.
Thankful for modern medicine! Had a headache and was thinking how grateful i am to be able to pop a Tylenol and feel better after a bit.
Good luck on the exam, and thanks for the flower picture.
I have thanksgivings! I'm thankful that:
1. Daughter #2 had a safe return from Norway with no crazies, no (comparatively) long delays and no plane parts falling off her plane. Also, she got the fancy section this time, and could lie flat to sleep, which she described as a game changer.
2. Daughter #1 and her family are unharmed after a man sprayed military-strength pepper spray on the walls of their hallway in the hotel where they were spending the night in order to attend the memorial for my brother-in-law. My son-in-law and two of my grandkids, ages 8 and 5, were exposed to it as they were leaving their room. The hotel was evacuated while emergency crews aired the entire building. Police found the suspect and made an arrest because the man did it in front of security cameras. No motive was obvious at the time of arrest.
3. The memorial service for my B-I-L was lovely. The pastor asked for comments by the attendees and about 6 different people, including a pastor, stood up and briefly and sincerely told of ways my B-I-L impacted and changed their lives for the better. What a gift to the family that was.
4. When I heard my dogs barking their "prey" bark, I was able to rescue a large, female box turtle (I googled it later) from their clutches before they killed her, since they've killed a turtle before. I'm thankful that we were near my shed so I could grab a shovel and scoop her up to carefully lift her over the fence into the open area behind our yard. I guess I can be thankful also that I learned (a). female box turtles are about twice the size of males and (b). turtles can lunge at dogs and jump off of shovels. Re: (b) I was able to get her back on the shovel and she didn't jump off again.
5. It was a non-venomous rat snake and not a venomous snake that got all tangled up in the bird netting on the blueberries, because my neighbor was gone, my lawn guy couldn't come for hours, and the FWC operator told me (incorrectly, as it turned out) that they don't "do" snake rescues. I'm thankful we have a pair of leather, elbow-length gloves and that, while snakes make me quite nervous, I'm not terrified of them, because I spent 30 solid minutes snipping mesh to free the snake. I had to hold the snake, you see. After I was done, of course, an FWC officer called me - he'd received the message but only after he got back out of the woods, when he had cell service again. He said he will certainly rescue a snake in trouble. He told me to keep him as a contact if I should need help another time, which was nice of him.
and a bonus:
6. My new windows are in, and hurricane insurance paid for them!
@JD, holy guacamole to #2, 4, & 5! I'd be a quivering useless mess if I'd experienced even one of those things.
@JD,
my goodness, what scary, dangerous and strange incidents you and your family had to deal with!
@JD, I'm glad that (except for your #2, which was horrifying) your BIL's memorial service went so well. Please tell your sister that I keep both her and you in my good thoughts.
And you certainly deserve the Kindness to Reptiles award for your #4 and #5. Me, I could have handled the box turtle, but the snake would have given me pause.
I have a huge thing to be thankful for today. Early Tuesday morning my oldest texted me from his bed with a very polite "sorry to bother you but I'm having some abdominal pain and I was wondering, have I had my appendix out or not?" A quick confab ended with DH taking him to the ER, son throwing up in the car on the way there, and getting admitted and given a CT scan which showed a bowel obstruction.
He had what is called a Meckel diverticulum, a common congenital abnormality of the small intestine, which had collected stuff and created a calicified bolus, which had dislodged and caused the obstruction. The surgery went very well, and the surgeon removed the diverticulum so it won't cause any more problems. Son is now recovering and working on walking and eating so he can get the heck out of the hospital.
So! I am thankful for:
--Our good memory that you do not mess around with abdominal pain (our youngest had a horrible experience with a perforated appendix), and that we were able to swiftly get him to the ER.
--That they did a WBC, saw his white blood cells were elevated, which prompted them to do a CT scan. If they hadn't, they might have sent him home to wait it out.
--That our second oldest, who right now is done with classes, was ready and willing to be at the hospital with his brother last night, so DH and I could get some much-needed sleep. 2nd oldest has been there most of the time, actually, including keeping me company while his brother was in surgery. It is so helpful to have a family member there, especially to take notes when the nurses come and talk about care, and the surgeon comes in at 3 am (!!!) to chat about the healing process....
--For a decent surgeon who was able to identify the Meckel's diverticulum (they're common but rarely symptomatic in adults) and remove it.
--That our insurance still covers our son; he has his own insurance through his employer, but is still eligible to use our insurance for now.
--That my husband has a flexible work schedule so he can take some real food over to the hospital (rather than the sugar-filled Ensure they're offering him).
--For the beautiful horizon rainbow that showed up yesterday while we were visiting at the hospital. It seemed like a lovely promise of hope.
@Karen A.,
Your sons sound like magnificent young men. For the oldest to text "I hate to bother you" when he was in pain - my goodness, how polite! And for the second son to stay with you all, that is one very considerate and caring gentleman. You sound like a close-knit loving family; how I wish all families were that wonderful. Get well wishes to your eldest son, and I hope you and hubby and DS#2 all get some rest. Glad to hear the insurance is covering this and that you had a top-notch surgeon (even if he comes by at 3 a.m.).
@Fru-gal Lisa, when he was settled in his room just after surgery he started mumbling something. We asked him to repeat it, thinking he was in pain. He was saying, "Sorry for all the trouble..." and when we explained what they'd found he kept saying "Oh, dearie me..." like an old Irish guy. He's a hoot.
Aww, that is so precious.
@Fru-gal Lisa, I second everything you've said. And I endorse Karen A.'s "you don't mess around with abdominal pain." The morning that DH, after a night of my being up and down with gut pain, found me throwing up green bile, he collared me and said, "We're going to the ER. Now!!" Good thing, since my appendix ruptured on the way out.
@A. Marie, Yikes! I had appendicitis when I was 16, only they couldn't figure out it was appendicitis, because apparently I had a shy appendix that was hiding on all the scans they did. So the doctors had me sit in the hospital, figuring it was an ovarian cyst or something, until finally they did open surgery, whereupon my appendix ruptured as soon as it hit open air.
Thankful for this morning starting place.
Thankful for the good coffer-filling rain we are getting although it makes for rather dismal lighting.
Thankful for Miss Molly who thinks going out the front of the house for her morning "constitutional" (with me to "observe" her) is different than going outside in back on her tie-out for a short length of time.
Thankful for my warm, little home with it's messy yard. The perennials are going leaps over bounds and with no mind to the fact I want to spread them out. It is currently a little spotty with color, rather than with swathes of color with the exception of the stand of goldenrod. The goldenrod is the busiest "restaurant" for bees and other flying patrons when it is in bloom.
Thankful the bleeding heart is in bloom on the south side of my house. It is so beautiful.
Thankful (as is A. Marie) for the cardinal couple that has taken up residence in my yard somewhere. Haven't located the actual nesting spot, but I know they or the heirs of the ones that lived across the street have moved into my lot.
Thankful, that though I appreciate many bugs and insects, the population of the kitchen ants has reduced substantially. An errant scout creeps through once in a while but a finger smoosh does it in.
1. I am thankful for the beauty of spring. The wildflowers are in bloom but the mountains are still covered with snow.
2. I am thankful for an astonishingly good book written by a brave woman. It is challenging me.
3. I am thankful for teledoc. I discovered my daughters pinkeye at 6 am on Sunday and by 7 am a Dr. sent a prescription to the pharmacy.
4. I am thankful that during my pregnancy (and frequent trips to Labor and Delivery) I met many different OB/Gyns. When my OB left I had experience with several Drs and know who I wanted to go to.
5. I am thankful for my husband who thinks it natural that men change diapers and get up in the night with crying babies.
@Rebekah in SoCal, may we learn the title of the astonishingly good book?
Thankful for:
Finding a good dentist who easily pulled a tooth that died and started a bridge.
Sunshine both early in the morning & late into evening.
Being able to watch granddaughter play soccer.
Good & close PT people.
The end of school is coming & we get to be at our MO home for an extended period.
Well, I came down with viral pink eye after subbing in a class of special ed preschoolers in which one child had gone home with pink eye and having to wipe another little kid's runny nose...and touch all kinds of surfaces. (The secretary later told me, when I called to report my illness and urge them to sanitize the areas where I worked, that all the classrooms have had kids with pink eye!) So I am thankful my eye doctor worked me in----- this is the first time I've had an eye infection of any kind, and because of last summer's cataract surgeries, I was very worried. (Those artificial lenses are permanently implanted!) He gave me eyedrops and ordered me to stay home for 10 days. I still had upper respiratory symptoms, so I'm thankful my family doc also worked me in, and she allowed me to get a steroid shot to try to knock it out really fast, along with some more Rxs. It's going to be difficult to stay home from work for 10 days -- if I don't work, I don't get paid. Plus I had to pay income tax, quarterly Medicare bill and a car payment right in a row, with an installment on property tax coming up real soon. Plus all the usual bills, of course. But I'm thankful I'm starting to feel a bit better and that I have food in the freezer and pantry, the mortgage paid off, a savings account emergency fund and some funds in investments I can fall back on if needed.
I am feeling a lot more thankful than last week, when I got sick. I'm thankful to be better today.
Thankful for beautiful walks in nature.
Thankful that family are visiting next week!
Thankful to have friends at work.
I am not thankful for the 3 golden eagles soaring overhead right now looking for a kitty treat. I have turned 2 flat bed trailers into kitty hideaways for when they are mousing in the fields and the eagles show up. I used no climb fencing to skirt the trailers, allowing the kitties to get away. They are huge birds!
I am thankful for Max the Maine Coon whom we adopted last week from my aunt, he is the brother to my Gustavus Maine Coon. He came to the kitchen for breakfast with the rest of the cat herd. I pulled out a dog harness that fits him perfectly. Even though he was born on this farm, he is not familiar with it, so we will walk him around to acclimate him.
The oak trees are starting to leaf out, the poison oak is leafing out too which makes it safer to identify and safely grub out.
I have late daphne, lilacs, violets, johnny jump ups, wood violets, wood hyacinths and tulips blooming.
The 6 bird houses are housing tree swallows.
This week I am thankful:
*for a good conversation with a prospective piano teacher for my kids. We are scheduled for a trial lesson next week.
*that two of my children won a writing contest they entered.
*that not every day presents quite as many emotionally-charged outbursts as today.
*for warmer weather.
*that I made time to exercise a little yesterday.
I’m onsite for a work conference and I am beyond tired so I am thankful everyday that my hotel is very close to where the conference is being held.
My team at work is a dream to work with and I am so thankful of how supportive we are to each other. We’ve all been onsite close to a week and can easily share when we’ve hit our wall. No one gets sassy or snippy because we are all tired, instead we ask how we help each other and offer support.
I was able to go out for dinner with my cousins that live where we are holding the conference last night. I hadn’t seen them for a while so it was a treat and I really needed the hugs. I was also able to have lunch with a friend from home that moved to the city where we are holding the conference. It was a perfect break and really fun to catch up.
My husband has been sending me a picture of our dog each day. I look forward to that message from home and I love to know he’s thinking about me.
Is your voice getting hoarse? I have been to a couple of blogging conferences and my goodness, I got so hoarse from all the loud talking you have to do in a big crowd!
Thankful Thursday! I am thankful that I finally found my main set of keys! They went missing a few months ago. I have a back up set but it’s nice to have two sets just in case. And I knew it had to be in the house somewhere so I didn’t want to spend the outrageous $ to replace the car key. Today while looking for something entirely different I found my keys in a tub of Nerf blasters. ??????? Just glad they are found. Plus the key chain is a one of a kind creation for f my child.
I am thankful
-for there being a whole bunch of t-shirts at Goodwill that fit my post-mastectomy, still-heavy-from-chemo body. I have been wearing my husband's shirts for two months, and I look and feel terrible in them.
-for the two bike rides I took this week. It felt glorious being back in the saddle. I have overdone it this week, so I need to rest the next couple days, but I hope this is the beginning of feeling good again.
-that it looks like we will squeak by with cash for our office space build out and not have to take the personal loan that was our backup.
@Amanda in VA,
I hope you get well and feel better right away, brave and beautiful warrior woman! Kudos to you for getting out and bicycling some.
This week's I am thankful:
- that I got my first real smile from my grandson. It melted Nana's heart. I love that they live close by, and I get to see him multiple times a week because he is growing so fast!
- that the orthopedic doctor suggested a steroid injection and more PT before we consider ligament reconstruction surgery. While I am tired of being in pain after falling and spraining my ankle almost 8 months ago, the recovery from the surgery would be difficult since there is no way to get into our house without using stairs.
- for being able to get together for dinner with good friends. It was so joyful to spend time with these ladies that I have known for over 30 years but don't get to see in person often enough.
- that we got all flowers I purchased last weekend planted. Now I just need to make time to plant all the bulbs I got from our Buy Nothing group.
- that we will be able to get together as a family this weekend to celebrate our son's 27th birthday
I am glad you got to see a c section. My first was a c and my doc asked if doctors n nurses could come in to watch and I said yes. The more the merrier!
Thankful for last weekends beautiful weather!
For 2 days of me not having to cook.
For an item on my wish list my son purchased for me. Yay me!
For our newly formed work puzzle club. Holy smokes it was such a serious group. We got a lot done in an hour.
Thankful and frugal we found a perfect box to use as a puzzle board. Worked out really well and hey it was free.
For free dirt. Enough to fill a very large planter.
We really appreciate patients who say yes to letting us watch!
- for Jeff Maurer's writing
- for Kristin's writing
- for a talented and honest OB/gyn: how you give the patient the news matters
- buds on the fruit trees
- bats at dusk (outside)
Hand-me-downs, freecycle, and scrounging. Little things such as an acrylic cookbook stand (they’ve gotten expensive since I last bought one) to a big one such as a hinged exercise bench.
Good friends.
Meeting a new neighbor. Really I’m the new neighbor, the couple has lived in that house for 35 years. The new neighbor giving me the excess winter irises she dug up. (Now I get to get myself into gear to plant them. But it’s nice outside.)
Having a good, reasonably responsive contractor available. That bathroom leak isn’t going to fix itself. For having some funds left in my House Happens fund that I can get it fixed right the first time.
Off topic - When you all comment on a post how do you know someone has responded to your comment? I read Frugal Girl via a Feedly app. Not a subscriber. To comment I go to the actual website. I have started to comment more often but would like to know if anyone has ‘responded’. Do you all just keep going back to that post and scroll thru everything?
Sadly, there is not a good plugin for me to use to offer that functionality. It used to be more commonplace, but since not a lot of blogs have such an active commenting section these days, the plugins for this are rather obsolete. I wish I could offer it, though!
@Maureen,
Great question. I've wondered the same thing.
@Kristen, Gotcha! Thank you for responding :).
@Maureen,
I obsessively scroll...my secret is out.
@Maureen, once I've read the comments, I press the "reload current page" icon at the top of the menu bar. It reloads everything and takes me to the first new comment / response after the reload of the page. I then just scroll through everything that I've previously read, noting any new comments that have been added. I may do this a couple of times throughout the day to see new responses or comments.
@Maureen, I scroll through looking for answers to my questions, or responses to my comments. This is the only social media site I participate in, other than my own blog, which rarely gets comments.
Thankful for:
A decent dentist. I hate going to the dentist (not the work, I am just incredibly uncomfortable with people that close in my face), but this one is the best I have ever found. No long waits, in and out, explains everything, and doesn't try to make small talk. I had my cleaning today and I mentioned how the crown I got last time was incredibly sensitive. He took a look, determined what he thought may be the issue, and fixed it on the spot instead of making me schedule another appointment.
Grandparents to watch the littlest one when I need to do things like go to the dentist.
The sweet and pure heart of the little one.
Portable air conditioners and fans since the big air unit quit working and we've been in the 80s this week.
1. Windows open for nice weather!
2. Walks in nice weather.
3. Reading on the porch in nice weather.
4. Bird songs audible indoors and out in nice weather.
5. Beautiful springtime blooms in this nice weather.
(Yay spring)
Kristen, you are one cool cookie. I can't stand seeing blood come out of people and nearly fainted after my infant son's long-ago eye surgery when a nurse handed him to me and he was crying bloody tears. Had there not been a chair behind me, we both would have hit the floor.
Today I am thankful for a good talk with a financial advisor. We are working to set up a trust for our adult son who has autism and it's been difficult. Also thankful for a lovely day, for our rescued puppy growing into such a good, smart dog, for my big, fluffy, affectionate kitty, and a delicious meal out with my sweet family.
Oddly, it's not like I even have to try! I'm not using any breathing techniques or distractions or anything; for whatever reason, this is just not hard for me to watch.
I feel compassion, but not lightheadedness. 😉
@Ruby,
I'm not generally all that squeamish, but I think seeing an infant cry blood might bother me just a little...that sounds pretty horror movie to me.
@Ruby, I'm with Becca about the bloody tears. And I'm glad you have a good financial advisor, as I do (see my earlier comments).
I started to comment yesterday about the gray hair topic and my incomplete message disappeared suddenly. I didn’t have time to rewrite so I’ll just comment here that I’m thankful for my gray hair… my hair is thinning due to age? Hormone imbalance? Mineral deficiency? Not sure. But what hair I have I’m thankful for it, gray or not.
I’m thankful Spring allergies aren’t overwhelming for me this season.
I’m thankful for great long-term friends and wonderful gatherings with them lately.
I’m thankful for a few special dance events coming up. One is a 40’s evening and my husband and I are really looking forward to the evening.
I’m thankful for a new prescription for my glasses. I can see so much better now.
I’m thankful for the deep, rich, challenging and life-giving teachings in our church. We have some gifted young teaching pastors with wisdom beyond their years.
I’m thankful for the maturity of our son and daughter and for the strong relationships we have with them. We don’t take that for granted.
-I am sitting at the kitchen table watching the cats watch the birds out the sliding door.. Thankful for the joy they both bring to our family.
- The sounds of spring. So excited to finally open the windows to hear the cheers and aluminum bats at the baseball/softball game at the park down the street.
- Our 16 year old daughter found a part time job. She is learning the ropes and will be ready to go when school lets out. This is her first "tax paying job". She has goals and needs the funds to make them happen.
- Hubby's birthday is this weekend. I am so thankful we found each other.
-Stability. It may sound boring to some but it is a thankful status that I recognize all the time.
5 minute thanks here at the end of the night before a thing:
-for good sleep last night. Good sleep has been brutally impossible to come by for a few weeks, and my mind and body were shutting down due to extreme fatigue. Hopefully this is the end of the rocky sleep spell.
-for energy to get up and do...anything! I cleaned the house a bit, rearranged a few rooms, knocked out some shopping, hung out with my kids and prepped for the weekend, all because I slept last night. It's probably a mercy I haven't slept this well consistently in a while, since I think I'd burn myself out.
-for little ones who tells me that they love me. I hope they know how much they're loved. There's been so much brokenness in our family as of late, I wonder if that message has gotten lost.
-for the warm sunny weather of last weekend that invited us on an adventure to see new things. Kids were still talking about that great trip today.
Always, always sending you love, friend. Hang in there. I know this is a long period of hard.
@kaitlin, Even when I sleep regularly, I'm not sure I get done all that you get done! Hang in there! (I don't know you, but I hate what you're going through.)
It's been a long but wonderful day. A friend of mine was attending a conference in my city; another friend (we were all coworkers once upon a time) was able to come out for the day and friend #2 and I spent the day together. We met up with friend #1 for dinner. It's been, I dunno, 20 years since we've hung out together? Soooo hugely thankful for that.
I have a cat with short legs and I sometimes call him Corgi Cat!
I tried to find the Wander and Thrive FB page and couldn't but I think I realy need this in my life - can you share a link?
Oof, so I double checked, and even tho she shared it with my via facebook, it looks like it's one of those times that Facebook shared an Instagram reel. So apparently the account really only exists on Instagram.
I'm thankful for my cat, who always makes it clear how much he has missed me when I get home from work (not so thankful for his habit of sleeping on my head, but take the good with the bad)
I'm thankful for no more snow, knock on wood.
I'm thankful for a good job that has made money worries almost non-existent over the last 4 years (also thankful for no more roommates, other than said cat!!)
