Thankful Thursday | a job offer

This week, I am thankful:

that I have a job offer!

I interviewed yesterday morning for a new grad job on the floor where I work as a tech, and I got an offer letter that afternoon.

Kristen in scrubs.

I think they are anxious to hire me. 😉

(I won't actually start with the new grad cohort until August, but it's nice to have my employment plans solidified.)

for the happy experience of being noticed in a good way

I have been working on this floor since last June, so one of the interviewers joked that this has been a very long working interview.

The manager of my whole floor (which is two units) said she's noticed my work ethic and my people skills/charisma, and you guys, that made me so happy. I actually teared up (with happy tears!) when I was walking out to my car.

Because of some things in my history, this sort of validation is especially meaningful to me, and I am grateful for the boost of confidence.

that my final exam countdown is in the 30s

This is very exciting! By next Thursday, I'll be down to just about a month left. Yay!!

that next week has some time for working on projects

I have two fairly big projects to do before the end of the semester, and it has been hard to find time to work on them.

But next week, I have some days with no lecture/lab midweek, which means I can hopefully knock out most of my project work.

I hate having projects looming over my head, so I would love to get them both done next week, which would be early on both counts.

That'd really clear up my headspace!

for some days in the 70s

Yay for not needing to run my boiler (which, as we have established, is currently problematic.)

Yay for open windows!

cat in window.
Chiquita appreciates a good open window every now and again

Yay for it being warm enough to wear my Miffy the bunny shirt. 😉

Miffy the bunny tshirt.

for an empty weight room

I had a midday gym session after my interview and my goodness, it's so nice and empty at that time of day.

weight room.

Unfortunately, midday is not usually a very convenient time for me to work out!

that I can still squeak by with an A in this class

I had my third exam this week and I got a 52/60. That's an 86.67%, which is about typical for me this semester (but definitely lower than my usual!)

exam screenshot.

I did some calculations, and despite getting mostly Bs on exams, I can still snag a low A grade in the class because there are other project/assignment points.

Sooo, as long as I get at least a 52/60 on both Exam 4 and on the final exam, I will get to keep my 4.0.

It is not the end of the world if I don't, of course. But since I have actually managed to keep it thus far, I'd kinda sorta like to graduate with the satisfying 4.0.

for tree leaves!

It's a little hard to see, but there are baby green leaves in the tulip poplar trees in my front yard.

spring leaves.

And every day, the green becomes a little easier to see.

that I got to answer Elisabeth's fun questions

In case you missed it, I did a gratitude interview over on her blog yesterday.

An excerpt from my answer about how I define gratitude:

It’s like a process of becoming more awake to what is true in your life. With no effort on your part, your brain will tell you a story that goes something like, “Your life is mostly terrible. Every day is filled with hard things.” But that is not what is actually true and real! At least, it’s not the whole story.

Every day does have hard things, yes, but every day also has some good and wonderful things. So you have to make a practice of noticing those good things. Then you will see your life as it really is: a varying combination of both pleasant and unpleasant things.

On that note....

What are you thankful for this week?

  1. Congratulations on your job offer!! What a weight off to know that you won't have to worry about job searching later. I also so appreciated your article on Elizabeth's blog. It made me think about those extremely temporary relationships I've formed with people at conferences and how they are actually precious interactions and didn't necessarily need to be maintained forever.

This week, I am thankful for:
    - Making it to yoga class at a new time with a new teacher
    - Reading a book that I hope is now sending me on a journey to cultivate more peace and acceptance
    - My van that runs consistently and is big enough for me to put my bike in
    - All the beautiful flowers that are blooming
    - My language exchange partner who is so good at being positive and finding fun things to do around the house that he shares with me in our conversations. Right now he is building his own telescope for about 25% of the cost of a commercial one.

  2. I bet they are as happy to hire you as you are to be getting the job! Congratulations! I am thankful to also be appreciated at my job. It hasn’t always been the case, so I’m glad that it is right now.

  3. The past couple of weeks have tipped the scales heavily in favor of unpleasant things. Nevertheless . . .

    Thankfuls:

--I have had daffodils from my little flower garden on my kitchen table for a couple of weeks now, and now the tulips are starting to bloom.

--My middle son has had a crazy week with track meets and FFA events, but he keeps assuring me it's still fun, which is all I want to make sure of. This child was a great challenge as a younger kid, and I am honestly so impressed at how well he has handled moving into middle school and all the activity and responsibility that came with it.

--The tiny store in the village ten miles away was actually open and had cream when I went on Tuesday. Had I not been able to get it there, we would have been out until Friday. Milk in my coffee is just not the same.

--One of my Lenten practices this year has been praying the rosary every day. I started it before some very challenging events, and I'm so glad I did. It has been such a great help to me to have that daily prayer time, which I didn't really make time for before. I mostly prayed for other people when I started it. Now I'm mostly praying for myself and my family. But in any case, it has helped me focus and comforted me, and I'm so grateful for that.

--I have been the recipient of such tremendous support--from friends both online and in my daily life, extended family, acquaintances, professionals, and especially my husband--as we have navigated a very difficult situation. We will be dealing with this for some time, but knowing there is support and sympathy has made a big difference.

    1. @kristin @ going country, I'm out of the loop and not sure if you've shared what's going on (and don't feel the need to if you haven't shared), but you and yours will be in my prayers. I'm thankful you have the support you need!

    2. @kristin @ going country, Ugh, and congratulations on having a job to look forward to! With money going to you instead of the other way around! Yay!

    3. @Jody S., I haven't shared in detail, no, because it's not really mine to share about in detail. But thank you.

    4. @kristin @ going country, I send continuing best wishes to you and your family in dealing with your challenging events.

    5. @kristin @ going country, Thinking of you and your family at this time and hoping things go better than expected.

    6. @kristin @ going country, so sorry you are in a tough time. Proverbs 3:5-6 is a continual comforting presence in my head as I navigate my own tough times. How do people get through tough times without faith in our all-knowing, all-seeing, all-caring, all-good-all-the-time God?

  4. Congratulations on the job! And being so close to finished school!!

    Thankful:
For no school this week. I’m getting caught up on stuff and was able to curl up with. A book during our snow storm.

For blankets—perfect for snuggling, calming kids down, making forts, wrapping up baby dolls, wearing as capes—the ultimate toy/tool.

For friends who affirm and build up those round them. It’s so much better than being unseen, unvaried, and criticized.

For my old dog who is starting to act old. He’s a perfect boy and I tell him that all the time, especially now that time with him feels like it’s dwindling.

    1. @Kaitlin, You are doing the perfect thing for your dog. I'm sure he appreciates having such a supportive carer as he starts to navigate perceptible aging.

    2. @Kaitlin, oh i hope you are wrong and that his time is not dwindling. maybe he will rally. good luck with him.

  5. THIS POST IS THE BEST THING ON THE INTERNET TODAY!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Of course they are anxious to keep you! These are smart people.

You're right that it doesn't matter if you keep your 4.0 at this point, but I would bet money that you do.

  6. Oh congratulations on your job offer; how great to know so much about where and who you'll be working with, and how well you'll fit there - I'm so happy for you!

  7. Congratulations, Kristen! As a former Human Resources administrator, I can assure you that you're the kind of person we were always looking for and could rarely find - conscientious, dedicated, cheerful and considerate. I agree with Birchie - they were smart people to snag you when they could. You wouldn't have been unemployed for long. So happy for your hard-earned and well-deserved success!

    1. @Mary ~ Reflections Around the Campfire, "...conscientious, dedicated, cheerful and considerate" I need to write those four words down to always take with me to work!

    2. @Marissa, or you could just put a photo of Kristen on a wall or desk for inspiration. Wink, wink.

  8. That is awesome Kristen!!!! Way to go getting a job! We all wish it was that easy. And yes it was nice for someone to notice/validate your work ethic and charisma. I think that also is what makes me happy for you. People tend to notice the negative and not the positive. Oh wait, that was in Elisabeth's blog yesterday! 🙂

  9. Ok I may have squealed a little bit when you said you got the job!!! How wonderful to be recognized and appreciated for your hard work and for who you are!!

  10. Congrats on the job offer. I am so thankful that I am not job hunting. It's pretty awful out there from what I've been told and things like ghost jobs and illegal quotas and the like have made it really difficult for some people to get a chance.

    I'm thankful for
    * Being able to hang clothes on the line. We've had April Showers and cold weather so a lot of my hangup stuff stayed in the laundry room for a while
    * For having reliable transportation.
    * For having a lot of books to read and occasionally some time to read them.
    * For bookshelves to store said books.
    * That my wife and I are finally able to get a sitter and have a date night this week. It's been far too long since we've been able to swing that. Plus the little one wants to see her baby sitter and stuff.

  11. I'm stopping by after reading your guest post on Elisabeth's blog. Sounds like you've got a LOT to be thankful for this week. Just from reading your blog posts I imagine you have amazing people skills, charisma, and a strong work ethic. And it sounds like it's all paying off! Congratulations!

  12. Congratulations! They are clearly thrilled to have you, and it is always so nice to be wanted and appreciated. You deserve all the good and wonderful things that are coming your way.

  13. Three hearty huzzahs, Kristen--both for the job offer and for the additional validation!

    Now, my thankfuls:

There are two pieces of good news re: my NDN. The first is that her 2024 tax paperwork is now all squared away; I helped her go through it and produce the necessary signatures and checks, and I dropped it all into the mail yesterday. The second is that she has formed a good relationship with her current home care aide (the third aide the agency has tried) and is **finally** letting her do some much-needed housekeeping. Hip hip hooray!

The news re: my NDN2 (the one who had the major water break in her house two weeks ago) is of course somberer: She has finally agreed to return to TX with her son and his family, at least temporarily. It's the best decision she could have made under the circumstances, I think, and I'm thankful that she has such good family support.

And I'm thankful as always for my friend Mr. Fix-It, who is coming over later today to help with my latest problem in the house: My refrigerator has developed an issue. Even if he can't fix this one, at least he should be able to tell me whether I should call a repairman or get a new fridge.

    1. @A. Marie, sorry about your fridge. i hope it is a reasonable fix and you don't have to buy a new one. good luck.

  14. Reading this post feels like the equivalent of snuggling under a very cozy blanket! Open windows (we're getting a mix of snow and ice pellets where I live today, so I'm living vicariously through you)! Job offers! Fun t-shirts!

    Today I'm thankful for:
    - My kids. Sometimes motherhood is...challenging. But there are these little moments that make my heart just burst. Like my son bringing me in a crocus from the front lawn, or asking me this morning - I'm down and out with a horrible cold - if I wanted a Magic Bag for my feet.
    - The gray day. Usually I want sunshine, but since I'm recuperating, I'm enjoying that the weather is matching my need to stay inside and hibernate.
    - Soup. We had chicken noodle and butternut squash soup this week and both were so easy to pull together and so hearty and delicious.

Thanks again for sharing your gratitude practice. You really are an inspiration, Kristen.

    1. @Elisabeth, ugh, did you get an airplane cold? It is so disappointing to come home from a great trip and get sick. Blessings on you, my adventuresome friend!

    2. @Central Calif. Artist Jana, I'm wondering if that's exactly it. My husband was sick when we arrived home, and now it seems to have made its way through our family. I don't usually get this sick with colds, so I'm wondering if it's not a regular "Nova Scotia" bug and something we picked up as one last souvenir from our travels.

  15. Congratulations on the job offer! And the factual compliments. 🙂

Thankful that we didn't have any damage in yesterday/last night storm (crazy lightning going sideways across sky) or storm earlier in week.
Thankful that teen dentist appointment went well, as usual. Teen has had same (children) dentist whole life & allows kids to stay through college. Plus dentist is really interested in child's life which is really rare.
Thankful that it is warmer today & no chance if rain so can dry out from so much water this week.
Thankful we are only getting rain instead of freezing rain storms like UP North where Mackinaw bridge was closed for 3 days because of huge amounts of big pieces of falling ice (3"+ thick) & high winds. Hoping it will be open today for people.
Thankful my dad is managing radiation that he started this week. Unfortunately it is about an hour away which means multiple stops on way home to bathrooms.
Thankful my dad's partner/lady friend drove him first day & will try to be available most of times to go with him.
Thankful for Kristen's blog that is a always a place to learn & share with each other.

    Have a great weekend.

  16. Congrats on the job offer! You’ve worked so hard (in many ways) to get to here. It’s great you are getting the recognition you deserve.

    - I’m incredibly grateful we got through these recent storms without any major damage. Sunday was pretty traumatizing. I could not see even an inch out the windows, just a green glow and straight line winds blowing the rain directly into the window. It was so loud in the basement, it sounded like the rain was pounding on the floor above us. Yesterday, we had more extreme weather come through, but somehow the storm split and went around both sides of us.

    - I’m glad our current dog is not aggressive and not determined to get past my temporary chicken wire fence fix. It was like a full time job trying to contain our last dog, even with the intact fence.

    - I’m extremely thankful my husband continues to have his job and we are able to have health insurance and all the other essentials.

    - I continue to be grateful I live somewhere where science and human rights are still a priority.

    - I’m also thankful for my meditation app. It’s been a lifesaver these past couple months, and helped me through my flying phobia a couple weeks ago and my weather anxiety yesterday.

    1. Also, there is something wonky with the site today. When I was trying to comment, it kept scrolling to the top and wouldn’t do anything when I tried to submit the response. I had to reopen the site in another tab for the reply button to work.

  17. Congratulations! I know you are thrilled! Plus, there isn't any mystery as to how the job will go - you know this place and the people you will work with.

    1. I'll join the chorus - I'm thankful for my job, although I'm also thankful I'll be retiring in less than a year. But my job is good, the people are nice, and I am appreciated here, something I haven't always experienced at work. Okay, almost never, before this job.

    2. I promise, I don't love this grandchild more than the others! She's come up a few times lately here, but the others are just as dear to me. The 19-year-old took me out to eat at a nice place 45 minutes from home for a late birthday gift this past weekend. She drove, insisted on paying for my meal, and we talked the entire time. She opens up to me and we have real conversations about deep subjects and everyday life, for which I am so thankful. I know some who aren't so lucky with their grandkids.

    3. I'm thankful that my oldest daughter is taking me for a day of just hanging out together this weekend, for another late birthday gift. My birthday is really spread out this year! I always enjoy times like these with my kids.

    4. I'm thankful that, barring any unexpected circumstances, my younger daughter doesn't have to travel for work this month. She was gone almost a full three weeks out of February and traveled twice in March.

    5. I'm thankful that my tiny new fig tree survived the freezes this winter and is busily popping out leaves. I'm thankful for the perfume of the Meyer lemon and Satsuma orange that are starting to open. I'm thankful for the bright white blooms of the English dogwood as they open. I'm thankful for the scads of still-green mulberries on the dwarf trees and the tiny blueberries starting to form on the bushes. I may lose some of this produce to birds, bugs and weather, but Spring always brings hope of a bountiful harvest.

  18. Congratulations, Kristen, on your job! You're going to be such an asset, but really, you already are. 🙂

  19. So thankful for the posters on this forum. I had commented earlier this week about my spouse, Early Onset Alzheimer's and the cost of care. The number of compassionate responses was so nice.
It was our 25th anniversary that day and I was the only one who knew it and I was MOROSE!

Thank you to all of the lovelies who responded

    1. @jess, I know all too well what it's like to be the sole "memory keeper" for a couple. And I also know all too well a lot of the other hits that you're probably taking. If you ever want to contact me directly, ask Kristen for my email.

    2. @jess,
An anniversary can be a lonely day. May you have peace and strength as you travel through this period, and be able to find the happy moments, as tiny as they may be, as often as possible.

    3. @jess, Aww, life can be so unfair! Sending you peace and comfort as you navigate the hand you've been dealt. If you can find an Alzheimer's caregiving group, I'd highly recommend you go. Talking to people who understand is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. I can't speak to the spouse angle (but I know A.Marie has you covered there) because my mom was the dementia patient, but I can say caregiving nearly ruined my life and my plea to you is please, please take care of your own needs and seek out all the help you can get because it really does take a village. Wishing you well, I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

    4. @Bobi, and jess,
I 100% agree with Bobi about taking care of yourself while caregiving (well, it's important all the time, but especially now). I didnt heed that advice while helping take care of my mother in law, who had multi-inftact dementia. Quite frankly, there weren't many genuine offers of help - my mom did offer, but I knew that offer came with strings attached (there would have been passive-aggressive negative comments about my cluttered home, my sons behavior, and any number of other topics. She was uninterested in cooking a homemade meal for us, which was desperately needed). My work plave and boss were unsympathetic and unbending as I attempted to work full time, caregive, and take care of our son. I ended up lonely, exhausted, and distant from my DH, to the point that our marriage was in a precarious place. It's now in a very good place, throigh much work and counseling.
Jess, sending you prayers and love as you navigate this difficult phase of life.

  20. I join the others in wishing you all the best in your new job. I remember getting my first GN/RN job & it was the best feeling!
*This weekend is our Friends of the Library used book sale. I am so thankful for the people I work with & how great everything looks
    * For these 2 puppies. They are a lot of work, but the joy they bring me is tremendous
    * For my son & his wife. They are such hard workers & enjoy each other so much. I like basking in their positive energy
    * I was outside last night with my dogs & was so grateful to live in a rural area without light pollution. The stars & the moon looked unbelievable
    * For an abundance of food & a desire to eat as healthfully as possible. I have a meal plan for all weekend because I know I’ll be tired after the book sale shifts

  21. Congrats on the job! So exciting to see after all of your hard work in school. Very inspiring to see you successfully building a new, wonderful life. GOALZZZZZZZ!

  22. Congratulations on the job offer. Though I am not at all surprised -- you would be an asset wherever you landed.

  23. Congrats on the job offer! Very exciting!

I am curious though, you had previously expressed an interest to join Labor and Delivery unit. Are you still wanting to pursue that (or another specialty)? Or have you decided you are happy with the unit where you have been working as a tech?

And my thankfuls... Too many to count.

Most importantly, that all of my family is safe and no damage to our homes from the tornadoes and severe storms last night.

That although the report on the swallow study test for my little boy was not as positive as we had hoped, we are getting the support we need to help him.

That my cousin's baby in the NICU has been improving so much and a month after he was born, they are finally able to hold him and snuggle him. They live far away but I'm loving all the pictures and updates my aunt is sending.

That I am able to take a little time away from work tomorrow to read stories to my daughter's 4k class. I love to see how the kids all interact at school. It's such a joyful place!

That we are having a combined birthday party for my two kiddos on Saturday. We are pushing the easy button a lot instead of doing it the most frugal way, but we have the financial resources to do so and I only have so much energy in 3rd trimester... My newly 5yo is so excited! (My almost 2yo doesn't get it but will have a great time when it comes haha)

That my job offers paid prepartum leave 4 weeks before baby is due and a generous paid leave after baby comes. This is not the norm for the US and I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to rest a little ahead of baby and time to dedicate to her once she is here! Without worrying about paying the bills.

I could keep going, but maybe I will stop. I don't usually comment with my thankful list, but I'm surprised how uplifting it was to actually write it down instead of just thinking about it. So many blessings in my life right now, even though some things are hard. <3

    1. I do want to consider labor and delivery down the road, but I want a wide base of skills for my first year as a nurse and a med surg floor is a perfect place for that!

    2. @Kristen, i learned from my retired hospice nurse friend that most new nurses start out in med surge.

  24. Congratulations on the job offer! I'm doing my happy dance in celebration!
    This week I'm thankful:
for the brand new belt I found at a local thrift store that was exactly the size and color I was looking for.
that I found a use for another skein of yarn I was given--a scarf for a friend.
that I jumped on the easy-to-make bagel trend. They really were easy to make and they taste great as well. Since I didn't have any bagel seasoning I added some grated chedder and a little oregano. Yum!
that the makeshift roller bandage I cut from an old thermal tee-shirt is working much better to hold a dressing on my arm in place than the roller bandage that was originally used. That one just made me itchy.

  25. I'm surprised there's not a line waiting to hire you. Job candidates of your caliber are rare! Congratulations, you are very deserving of success and happiness!

    1. @Bobi, I’m guessing there is a line waiting to hire Kristen! And after a couple of years, I bet her school will be asking her to come teach or mentor other nursing students. Maybe a publishing company will be pursuing her to write a book on surviving and thriving through nursing school.

  26. Congratulations on your job offer. It is wonderful that they recognize and appreciate your hard work and positive attitude.

    This week I'm thankful
    - that our son's soft sculpture art project is done and he was pleased with the results. He designed the piece, and I sewed it into being. It was fun working with him on a project.
    - that our grandson is recovering from his ear infection
    - for all the lovely flowers blooming in our yard and in the neighborhood
    - for the unseasonably warm weather here. It will be mid-80s through Saturday
    - for my job. While I don't love the project I'm currently working on, I do love my company and appreciate they have found funding to keep me employed while we wait for a contract to be awarded

  27. Oh, Kristen, I am sooooo happy for you! Congrats! Your hospital is getting a blue chip employee, for sure, and its patients will greatly benefit. As the old Virginia Slims commercial used to say, "You've come a long way, baby, to get where you've got(ten) to today!" And you have!
    1. For the rain. I don't have to water my yard!
    2. For being debt free except for the car.
    3. Good eyesight thanks to the cataract surgery over a year ago. Miraculous!
    4. Rose bushes in the front yard are budding, and I may even have a couple of small blooms. And my grandmother's prized purple irises are blooming in the back. (See below).
    5. Online communications.
    ----
Oh, and tomorrow would have been my grandmother's birthday. I am thankful for the love (and hugs) she gave me for all those years, and especially for her being such a good example of a Christ-following woman.

  28. So many responses to my questions about Foxfire (Ordered and received “Sometimes a Shining Moment” from the library)
The grown-up neighbor kids, come by to visit when they are back at their parents’ house.
My sister’s infinite patience and willingness to keep our mom in (somewhat) independent living.
Many good books from the library.
My neighbor who brings me those mini cucumbers whenever she shops.
Our friend with an orange grove who lets us pick.

  29. Congratulations on your job offer! OF COURSE they want to snag you before someone else gives you a better offer.

Any clue as to why you aren’t scoring 100% on your tests this semester? Must be a notoriously more difficult term, because you are super diligent in your study habits.

    1. One comfort is that pretty much everyone I know in class is having the same experience as me with grades; I think this is just a really hard semester!

  30. WELL DONE! on the job offer. But as has already been said, those are smart folks at your work; they recognized a gem and grabbed it. Your 4.0 is also safe, I am sure, because Kristen does what needs to be done, with a smile. Go, you!

  31. Look at you with a great grad job! You rock, Kristen! Crossing fingers for your A to stay.

Right now I an grateful for yesterday's rain, for a tough but fruitful talk with our son about expectations as a member of the household, for my Demon Puppy recovering from a gastro illness, a peaceful neighborhood and a loving family.

  32. Big congrats on the job offer!!!!
    - Along the same note as your job offer, my husband has been picking up more jobs, very thankful for this answer to prayer! There's many ways this particular job-type is a nice fit for our family right now.
    - For a little rain last night!!!
    - For good health
    - For my two teens

  33. Congratulations, Kristen!!! I love the Miffy shirt as well!

This week I'm thankful for lots of sunshine, positive feedback and an ice-cream in the park.

  34. Lots of good things this morning:

I finished a wonderful trip to the 3 national parks in Florida. They were beautiful and inspiring. I was reminded again that nature is unfailingly creative in its adaptations and symbiotic relationships when face with survival challenges. I am glad to remember I am a part of that nature as well. I have visited 30% of the 63 National Parks and have plans to reach my 40% goal by the end of the year.

My husband and I are successfully developing better communication skills. We are in the middle of a two year renovation, navigating a generational family farm business, and rebalancing our life with me retired. This has strained our "tried and true" interactions. We need a few more tools in the tool box for our marriage. Thankfully we have both come a long way in pausing and "do overs". Our most effective tool is our shared sense of humor - especially regarding each of our weaknesses. Humility ( in terms of remaining teachable) and respect go a long way in a marriage I have found.

  35. Congratulations to you on your job offer! I still remember getting an offer in February for my May graduation (I was interning at the company) & what an absolutely incredible relief it was for me. And, that was 25+ years ago!

Things I'm thankful for this week:
-The Calm app (which, incidentally was free with my credit card), for helping me get my meditation on, during a time when I really need it
-That DS18 feels comfortable inviting friends over to our house. I love getting to know (and, almost always feed!) his friends.
-That DS19 had a successful job interview, and dS18 is starting a job this weekend.
-A friend offered to refer me to a role
-That DH & I still want to go on date nights. We are planning one for this weekend, after a wild past few months. We need the time together, and I cherish that we both still look forward to date nights.

  36. Congrats on your new job!!

This week I am thankful for:
    - my husband. He is thoughtful, loving and always supportive. I know how blessed I am.
    - that my daughter's foot is doing better.
    - that my youngest is graduating college in a month!!
    - for sunshine. Sunshine always makes me happy!
    - for my job. I work in a very supportive and positive place. I try to never take it for granted!

  37. Kristen, so thrilled to hear about your job offer.
Isn't it great to have a verbal positive affirmation for your work ethic?

I have always believed we do the best we can, and sometimes even more, in whatever job we have (ALL jobs have value.) and we will get noticed. Good/great notices good/great.

One less thing to worry about and no more interviewing (official as opposed to ongoing on the job.)

I am grateful that an escalation specialist reached out to me this morning in the ongoing nightmare of maintaining my health aide due to a major change in how the state handles this with a totally different program and company running it. This person can't solve ALL the issues/problems with the new company, but it's a start. After five days of calling with no one calling back, after I spoke to my state assemblyman and state senators' reps and appealing to the head of disability for the state, FINALLY someone trying to help. Fingers crossed.

I am especially thankful that I somehow learned of an advocacy group called Caring Majority Rising, which has provided all kinds of resources, assistance, information and a wonderful series of "Water Cooler" zoom sessions where folks from all areas of concern about this major change to a Medicaid program have assembled along with reps from our State senate, assembly and other advocates have provided valuable information.

I am grateful that I have Internet access and the knowledge and ability to deal with the paperwork (and the politics and other problems from technical, financial and other perspectives) and the unhelpful reps. That I was able to locate and ask for help. That people have been helpful and that I have been able to help them with info and resources.

A wonderful support community has been formed during this whole ongoing mess (hours and hours and hours). People are seriously stressed (Including me with high BP and BS numbers and not being able to sleep from the worry of losing my home health aide, which could happen due to the inability of the company the state appointed to handle this "transition" (It's not a transition. It's an entirely new program and process.)

I've never been big on groups per se because some have been less than helpful. But when you find one where everyone is really working to share and listen and offer solace along with information...it's my major source of support in this nightmare of a process. I have expressed my gratitude in thank you emails/texts to both individuals and organizational staff. REPEATEDLY. They have even been arrested when protesting to get attention for our plight. They and my fellow "consumers" (how we are designated in the program) and our PAs (Personal assistants but they are actually home health aides who do a lot of other things for us and keep us sane and healthy.)

I am grateful that despite the numerous people charged with helping who do not help, that there are others who are genuinely trying to help me and my aide through this process.

I am grateful that despite the chaos in some government departments due to loss of senior and other staff, that there are still people working hard to help.

I am grateful for the epic stance taken by Sen Corey Booker this week. THANK YOU for speaking on our behalf.

I am grateful that the citizens of Wisconsin could not be bought.

    1. @Irena, That's terrible, what you're having to go through to deal with the new program and keep your home health aide. I'm sorry you (& others) have been put in this position. Your persistence and resilience are super impressive!

  38. We celebrated my husband’s birthday last night! I was able to snag a reservation at our favorite restaurant ON his birthday so he could enjoy his favorite dish (the restaurant closed last year but was reopened by another restaurant group much to our delight but reservations are tough to come by).

We’ve had a couple of rounds of light snow this week. I am excited for spring and warmer weather, but the snow was so beautiful!

My son is starting track next week – he’s trying something new!

I got upgraded on tomorrow’s flight. Yay!

I had a really good puppy snuggle session this week. Our puppy likes to be near us, but he’s not a big cuddler. One day he was super clingy so I sat on the couch with him and he curled up on my lap and went to sleep. It was heaven.

  39. Congratulations on your job offer!!!! First time commenting here although I have been reading for several years. I also work in medicine (I'm a pulmonologist) -do you mind if I ask are you joining a med surg floor? If you are, its a fabulous place to start building a solid foundation for practice! Speaking of gratitude- I can't tell you how grateful I have been over the years for all of the amazing pulmonary, medicine and MICU nurses I have worked with.

    1. Yep, it’s basically a med surg floor. I figure it’s a good place to get exposure to a wide range of skills as a new grad. I don’t want to specialize too soon and pigeonhole myself!

  40. I am feeling so very thankful this week that . . .

    1) Our business ended the month of March in a better place financially than I had hoped possible. That allowed me to write a big, fat check that wiped out most of the debt we had accumulated in the last 18 months of medical emergency after medical emergency.

    2) After today I am four weeks from finishing the semester. It has actually been very easy teaching a course I have already taught. But still I am looking forward to, after the month of April, almost 6 months with no teaching. And my health is finally good. I am about to get so much writing done!

    3) The hardest part of our office move is behind us. It was a lot of work and stress renting our commercial space and moving our own operation back home. But as of Monday we were fully out of the office. Now we just have to sort through and find places for everything at home. It won't be easy, but it will be so much less stressful than the bit that is now behind us.

    4) My projections show we are covering all our tax payments and mortgage and everything else just fine over the next four months. Our new tenant starts paying rent after that point and our employee is back from maternity leave. Anything can happen, but based on what I am relatively certain is supposed to go in and out, we should be just fine. We should even be able to pay off this last bit of debt, which will be such a relief.

    5) Our family is on the mend. In the midst of the last week of moving, three of the six members of our family got the flu. (We know because after a week of fever, my husband finally went to urgent care where he was tested.) Thank goodness for the flu shot, which likely kept three of us from contracting the virus at all and three of us from having an even worse experience. Even still, I am glad to see my children back to full health and my husband almost so.

    6) I turn 44 tomorrow. There were points in the last two years when it was anything but certain that I would reach this age. A cancer journey will make you see birthdays as the blessings they are. Praise God for each passing year.

  41. I'll take some time while lunch leftovers are heating up to do my thankfuls. This week I am thankful:
*that we are getting some rain.

*that the presentation about unleaded and leaded aviation gas on Tuesday evening wasn't nearly as boring as I was expecting. (My son needed me to go to this meeting with him.) And I learned quite a bit.

*for an uneventful trip to and from face therapy yesterday. The drive home was rush hour time, and very busy!

*that my all of my children who entered an essay contest won. It's so hard when one sibling wins, and the others are left feeling inadequate. I know it's a lesson to be learned, but it's so nice that the winners' joy over winning doesn't have to be tempered by sadness for a sibling.

*that boy with amblyopia and a good appointment that showed at least some improvement. (Did anybody out there patch longer than the doctor said to? He's cutting him back now, despite improvement, and I don't know what I think about that.)

    *for a little warmer weather.

*for pretty daffodils and other spring flowers. For asparagus peeping up. That I should have a chance to meet my son's girlfriend this weekend. That I was able to watch college boy singing in his friend's senior recital before the video was taken down (technical glitch?) That my family is supportive when a feel blechy and whiney. That Kristen found a job she's happy about.

  42. Congratulations on the job! How great that they recognize what an asset you will be to them and you’ll already know how things work there. Win win for them and you!!

  43. I am just OVER THE MOON for you. What a journey! Your kindness, compassion your LIFE SKILLS, your education, it’s all adding up to one incredible NURSE who now has a GREAT JOB OFFER! YAY FOR YOU!!!

I am thankful for you and for all the wonderful people who comment here.. it is a breaht of fresh air to visit this blog!!!!!!!!

  44. Congratulations on the job offer. I am thankful that the Lord speared us in the storms and tornados over the last few days and will in the days to come. I have been so blessed in my life and I appreciate all the people who have helped me and guided me along the way. I am in a season of life that I know things don't just happen by chance. I know God loves me and has a plan for my life.

  45. This week I am thankful for
    1) an uptick in workload on the new side of my job which, while stressful, reaffirmed that I do actually enjoy this part
    2) supportive noises from both my bosses to hire additional support for me so this unsustainable pace doesn’t have to be forever
    3) an out of the blue message from our beloved old nanny asking if we would have her back in September when the little dude starts big school (yes! Yes! Yes!)
    4) an early finish on Monday which meant I could take my little dude out for afternoon tea (his favourite meal of the day)
    5) my new oven - after three weeks without a working oven, it’s very nice to have it back!

  46. This will sound strange, but heart med after 6 weeks of falls and low energy and son had rebound influenza for 1 month. It took 3 visits to get heart med.

Nothing at first when I visited urgent care with 210/110 taken manually. Got low dose BP med at nurse practitioner on visit 2.

At February Red Cross blood donation, I had 110/?.

So now, I have to learn to do little exertion.

So thankful for heart med and low dose BP med.

    Former CNA

  47. This week I’m thankful that my physical therapy seems to be working. Hoping that third time is a charm. The therapist is quite tough, which I appreciate.

My thankful also include your job offer, which you richly deserve. Often, we make what we get by dint of hard work and great attitude. Actually, they are the ones who lucked out in this instance, even more than you.

  48. A very big congratulations to you in your job offer! You’ve achieved so much and should be very proud of yourself.

  49. 1. I am thankful for my faith. Having made some difficult decisions lately and it has guided me and comforted me all the way through. He is faithful!
    2. My vacation from caretaking starts tomorrow and you guys.... it is SO desperately needed. My family has shouldered a lot over the last 4 years caring for an aunt with advancing dementia, bringing my husband through cancer treatments, a flood in our home that forced us to move out for 5 months and replace walls, floors, furniture, paint, you name it. We have so much to be thankful for but it has not been an easy time. I am looking forward to putting part of that load down and feeling the much needed relief that will come.
    3. Coupons from CVS that saved me over $40 today. These were useful to acquire allergy medication, some laundry things for vacation, Easter items, face wash & moisturizer and sunscreen.
    4. For our church and the lovely feeling of coming home to so many familiar faces when we walk through those doors. There are so many that struggle with church hurt and I am truly grateful to have been brought to this circle of believers.
    5. For the beauty of Springtime. I love seeing all the tiny leaves, flowers and sunshiney days. This helps me to be grateful as the pollen is the highest it has been in 30 years and I am struggling with no voice, a cough that rears it head every night at bedtime and some congestion. The highest level of pollen in GA in 30 years. Goodness. Thank God for Claritin!

  50. Congratulations on your job offer. How wonderful for you and your employer. It's nice that everyone knows what they are getting into.

I am happy for you that you received positive affirmation from the hospital administrator. I am sure it is well deserved/earned.

  51. Congratulations! There’s something particularly satisfying about being an offered a job by people who already know your work well, and whom you already like and respect.

  52. Congratulations! And I'm zero percent surprised, but very happy for you. 🙂

Thankful that my workplace is close enough to my daughter's university for me to stop over after work, which I did today. For not losing power during recent storms. For my son finding a good apartment to move to. For my job, including my coworkers. For goofy cats and my husband, who adores those cats (men who like cats generally are good guys, in my non-scientific observations).

  53. I am thankful for your Thankful Thursday posts, because they are good reminders to me to also look for the good and appreciate it. Also, want to say that your Miffy t shirt is ADORABLE!! We are currently expecting rain and snow here in Denver up thru the weekend, so I will hold on to hope for warmer days (and shorter sleeves) ahead for us soon too.

  54. I'm late, but congratulations to you, Kristen! So well deserved, and what a wonderful thing to know you will go right into a job doing what you love.

  55. 1 - That you aren't in the IT field "I hate having projects looming over my head" - that is ever present in IT. No offense but unlike too many, you picked a career field you like, not one for the money.
2 - I have the work flexibility and financial means that allowed me to take my cat to our local vet THEN drive said cat 60 miles (one way from the vet) for an ER visit at a college vet ER. Yeah the cat will require surgery. Glad I did *not* got to our local ER vet (read $$) only to be told cat needs a specialist (our vet .$). Local vet - which is why I am a loyal client for visits and meds - did all the calling so I was assured prompt ER service. College is one of the best vet programs so I know he's in good hands.
3 - co-worker filed for retirement. Scheduled a meeting with boss's boss (who used to be my boss). His first words were "we're not going to burn you out". Yeah, you're not but glad management is not being orange pox stupid. Place your bets on whether Kristen will be gainfully employed before I am retired. You don't have to bet money, diet soda is an acceptable bet.
4 - Aforementioned feline is doing better on the antibiotic (suffice it to say tissue you shouldn't see, much less out of a body part, is no more). He's a bit miffed at me (I give him his meds) but he'll get over it.
5 - Aforementioned feline travels well and is an excellent patient. Driving a busy interstate with a quiet feline was much appreciated. Back roads on the way home (and when we have to take him for surgery) is less stressful for the driver. I do love GPS but not small town speed trap speed limits.

    1. Haha, there are a LOT of reasons I am not built to work in IT. It is not my calling.

I'd rather deal with body fluids. 😉

  56. Congrats on the job offer, Kristen! So glad they recognize excellent people!
Do you think you will take it? Do you still want to do labor and delivery, or have you come to enjoy med/ surg- oncology?
You will be fabulous at whatever you do!

    1. Yes, I plan to take it. I love so many things about the floor where I work.

I will consider specializing into something like L&D down the road, but first I want to establish a solid base of skills that will make me versatile in the future. I don't want to pigeonhole myself right away even though L&D would be really fun to do!

  57. Congratulations on crushing your months-long working interview! They are lucky to recognize your talents early and snap you up. It sounds like a really good fit since you already know people and processes at that hospital.

Grateful for friends who check in, fresh-baked bread and modern medical technology.

  58. What a testament to your abilities that they want to hire you! Are you accepting, or are you going to see what else is out there? Thanks for taking us along on this journey. You are a wonderful example to us all.

  59. congratulations on your job for august. that is spectacular. i am grateful the hubby is recovering nicely from surgery. our former nanny is also recovering from her cancer surgery. that my mother-in-law is still around. that we are renting a car and going to washington dc for spring break. we were supposed to go there when covid hit the world. so this is very exciting. we are taking buddy the cockapoo and we have to fine him a sitter for april 17 when we have a tour of the white house. i have always wanted to c the white house.

  60. Congrats on your job offer!
Robins, skunk cabbage, the street sweeper and peepers. All my official signs of spring. My forsythia is blooming too.
My husband; he puts up with me.
My car that is still plugging along.
Not having to worry too much about tariffs.
    Warm-ish days and cool nights.

  61. That is amazing to have a job offer in your pocket, it must be a huge relief! XXOO

  62. Thankful for a new job, too!

I’m planning to start nursing school in the fall, and I just got a job as a tech at in a really good hospital system in our area.

  63. - herbal remedies friends gifted or sold to me very budget. I have been dealing with more prominent cycle pain & sciatica flare this week and have used several of the remedies from my friend!

-sunshine days. I sat out on the patio yesterday for a phonecall and it was almost 70 degrees after a week of gray days

-friends to do errands with: I don’t drive and a friend was going to the next state over. I tagged along and was able to consign some baby items

    - free time: although I am unexpectedly unemployed, it gives me time to pickup odd jobs, do life with friends & their kiddos, and job shadow friends to learn about remote work.

-a full pantry: I’m in a chaotic time going through divorce, being unemployed, planning a cross country move, and reporting DV, having a full pantry is such a BLESSING. My meals might not be fancy but I know I have stockpiled enough to have sustenance at the very least.

-a bittersweet thankfulness; when friends move I get their leftover housing & pantry items to rehome. Three friends have moved in the last 6 months. Not only do I get a few items but I get to pay it forward for some folks. This week I was gifted a bunch of farm apples and they are so yummy!

  64. Congratulations Kristen! They are obviously very lucky to have you. I'm glad you like working there enough to want to continue on there as a grad!

  65. I'm thankful we survived the last few days of crappy weather with no damage. There was crazy wind and rain here in central Arkansas and all over the state.
We lost power for about 4 hours, but that's nothing compared to people who are still without power after 2 days. And I'm grateful for the electric dept techs who work in trying and often dangerous conditions to get the electricity back up and running. I'm sure done of their own homes were in the dark as well.

  66. Belated congratulations! I’m behind on blog reading and so happy to read of your job offer after watching your press through nursing school!!
