Food Waste Friday | a good week!
Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born. If you're not a blogger but still want some food waste accountability, feel free to participate by leaving a comment.
Thanks in part to my thorough fridge clean-out from last week, I have very little waste to report this week...I just lost a clementine, which looked fine on the outside but was moldy in the middle. We were in the midst of lunch when I discovered it, though, and I didn't stop to take a photo.
So, here's a random photo to help keep this post from being boring. ๐

But if you had been there, you would have understood !
Thanks for doing this. I just don't say this enough, really do appreciate the thought you put into this linky but more so your posts each day.
No waste here this week. We are generally just starting to run out of the food stock. good thing we grocery shop today and tomorrow.
This week I threw away something delicious! It's a very strange turn of events, but I blame the unseasonably warm weather.
Eep! I put in the wrong link! Ignore that first one, unless you want to read about library marketing ๐
I was doing so well ... till I tried a new recipe for OJ soup. Not good at all - the whole thing went down the drain. (It was pouring outside and I needed the pot.)
I'm kinda glad you didn't take a picture, because that sounds like a yucky surprise to find in a clementine! At least it went into compost!
I wasted some leftover gravy that we never got around to using and a couple tomatoes from the garden (yes, I STILL had them) that I never got around to making into tomato soup ๐
I tried a new recipe this week for pork butt with apples and onions...I had such high hopes, but the sauce was too sweet for me. Combined with a so-so cut of meat (next time I will plan and drive the hour to the butcher instead of buying at the grocery store), these leftovers just not my favorite. I made a couple lunches of them and then scrapped the last portion. Lessons for next week's plan!
1 clementine sounds ok to me! You know you have the elimination of food waste bug when after taking an inventory of my Fridge last night in prep for 'No Waste Tastes Great' I changed the menu at the last minute for a dinner party I'm hosting. The girls are coming over for a pre-Christmas pow-wow. I had text out a menu of Spicy Butternut Squash Soup, Chicken wrapped in parma ham and my take on 'Eton Mess' earlier this week. Butternut soup will now be Broccoli and Cheese soup after pondering what to do with the head of the green stuff sat on the shelf! Friday's 'Food Waste Friday' whatever the occasion!
ps - Did my second shop at Aldi today and beat my impressive ยฃ8.89 underspend by a further ยฃ3.85 - ยฃ12.74 under my ยฃ50 target (so purchased 3 bottles of wine to stock up!)
At last! NO Food Waste this Friday! All through the week, my husband, Glen, says, "Eat it up...Food Waste Friday is coming close!" We laugh...and "eat it up"! Even when we are shopping (which we do together), we purchase with Food Waste Friday in mind! ๐ Thanks Kristen for this! Cheeryshirley
I love that your husband gets involved too. Now that I've starting taking photos and linking up here my husband will comment when I take out my camera in the kitchen. He usually refers to it as my photo for my "Blog [post] of Shame" ๐
Susan@Emperorp ~
That is so funny...your husband calling it your "Blog of Shame"! ๐ My hubby refers to Kristen's Food Waste Friday all through the week. When asked what he would like for lunch, he often cocks his head, raises eyebrows, and comments, "Well, Food Waste Friday is how far away? You don't want to get caught, do you?" Then, goes off chuckling! We are both so into this thing, it is amazing! ๐
This is the first week where we haven't had food waste in a LONG time.
Though we have some homemade pudding that needs to be eaten.
Can I ask how long your canned goods stay in your home? What do you keep in stock all the time? I feel like a few of these have been staring me down...and it's making me twitch. I wonder if I should just use stuff from my freezer and pantry for the next week and just stock up on fresh veggies....
My waste this week was awful. Seemed like we were throwing away food every day and I'm afraid I've got more coming this weekend. Sigh.
Bad week for me, too. Everyone named Jen takes a turn at bad food waste this week! Some lovely Raspberry sauce got moldy, the last piece of cornbread and the last serving of chili hit the trash, the last quarter of a lime got moldy, seems like there were a couple of other things that I can't remember.
I had some waste this week. Two loaves of bread!
We had some pumpkin seeds and some scalded yogurt/ricotta cheese that went to the compost. All in all, not a bad week!
Honestly with the clean out before and after thanksgiving for our trip, this week had almost no food waste. Maybe just a tiny bit of romaine leaves. Often times when I buy fresh romaine, I have to take off the outer leaves, or tops of some leaves, etc. as they are not good. But nothing else, that I can remember. Think I did see some mold on some cheese that will need to be cut off soon.
I WANT that salad - it looks so yummy!
A late in the day post and link up. I had a fun and rewarding day, both with my family and moving out a lot of items from our home. I love passing items on to others who will get greater use out of our stuff. My home and my heart feel lighter tonight.
As for the food waste. Only two things. One was consciously done. The other happened because I acted unconsciously while grumpy.
Thankfully I learned something from both losses ๐
