A first-ever for The Frugal Girl: a giveaway of my own

I know I'm supposed to be posting about baking today, but I've got nothin' for ya! I plan to bake a little something to share with you tomorrow, though, so we're just flip-flopping Wednesday's and Thursday's posts. 😉

green gift wrap

Two years ago when I posted about how to make cloth gift bags, Katy of The NonConsumer Advocate suggested that I do a cloth bag giveaway, and while I thought that was a great idea, I never really around to it.

Well, until now.

This week I made a small red velvet gift bag specifically for one of you!

To make it, I used the last of the fabric from this jumper that was given to me as a hand-me-down when I was a teenager.

(Yes, I totally wore it. In fact, it was one of Mr. FG's favorites, and I wore it for our engagement pictures, which I would share with you if they were digital. So you'll just have to imagine me with puffy bangs in a velvet jumper. Or not. That might be disturbing.)

Anyways, this jumper has definitely done its time as a jumper and is serving us much better as a pile of gift bags!

I'm not a professional seamstress by any stretch of the imagination, but I think this bag will serve you well. The top edges are finished neatly so that they'll look beautiful when you tie the bag shut, and the inside edges are zig-zagged so that the fabric won't fray.

I'm including a silver ribbon that I salvaged from an Ann Taylor bag (Worry not...I wasn't actually shopping at Ann Taylor. The bag was filled with hand-me-downs. 😉 ).

So, every part of this gift bag is repurposed except for the thread that I used.

I made this bag from the bodice pieces (it's all that was left of the jumper!), so it's about 9.5x 8.5 inches, which is perfect for small gifts.

If you'd like to enter to win this bag, just leave a comment. I'll randomly choose a winner 48 hours from now, at 7:00 AM, EST on Friday. I'll contact the winner by email to obtain a mailing address and if I don't hear back from the winner within 48 hours, I'll choose a new recipient.

Because I'm paying the shipping costs for this, I'll have to be a meanie and say that it's open only to readers who live in the 48 contiguous United States (edit: WilliamB pointed out that shipping to APO and FPO boxes costs the same as domestic shipping does, so if you've got one of those addresses, enter away!).

If you live outside the U.S., though, don't lose heart. Cloth gift bags are super easy to make, so if you've got very basic sewing skills, you can whip up a bag by following my tutorial.

See you tomorrow for some baking!

  1. May I suggest allowing APO and FPO addresses as well, since shipping to these addresses is the same as shipping to the lower 48?

  2. I'd love to win! Oh, and just a heads-up shipping to an APO/FPO does require customs paperwork this is available at the post office-it's not awful, but definately a pain IMO.

    1. Good point - I forgot about the form. It's not hard at all, you can it do while standing in line. The hardest part for me is finding it at the post office in the first place. It does mean you have to go to the post office, though. Sorry!

  3. Inspired by your original post on these bags my daughters and I are keeping a lookout at both the fabric store and Goodwill for a good deal on velvet fabric or velvet clothing. We want to make pretty Christmas bags too 🙂 Maybe we'll win this One to start. Our collection!

  4. It is a great idea and a beautiful bag! I am new to your blog and it has definitely got my wheels spinning with what I can do with an old velvet prom dress that I have at my parents house!

  5. I would like to note that if you're sneaky, you can get some great deals at Ann Taylor, particularly the LOFT store! 🙂 Periodically they'll do 30 or 40 percent off their already reduced clearance prices. I've gotten quite a few lovely items of clothing for under $15 that had original price tags of $80+ ! 🙂 I do LOVE the ribbon and the velvet though - so cute and festive!

    1. Ooh, I love sales where you get to take an additional percentage off of clearance sales. They really blow my hair back. =P

    2. I can also vouch for what Megan said. I've gotten some really good deals at the LOFT. The clothes fit me perfectly and are so well made that they last for a long time. Just my two cents. 🙂

  6. Ooh, pretty! Count me in. I just realized that I remember the cloth gift bag tutorial being posted last year, which means that I've been reading your blog for about a year now, and it's fantastic! Time flies 🙂

  7. I'd like to try my hand at making these and it's so much easier if you have one in hand to look at as you go along- so please enter me also! Thanks for all your frugal tips- I'm still working hard to be a SAHM now that my kids are older. Hubby is super supportive so that helps a lot! We wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas!!

  8. I love the sweet memories your repurposed items invoke. I love looking at former clothing and remembering the time and place of their being worn. You are such an encouragement to me.
Thanks for sharing your advice, hints and memories.
    Joan M

  9. I would love to win! When you did your post about making cloth gift bags, I was inspired. Hubby and I just put our flannel sheets on the bed. They were an after-Christmas purchase last year and came with two white flannel pillowcases. I dislike flannel pillow cases, so they are now destined to become gift bags! I'm planning to leave one of them as is for larger gifts and cut the other one up for smaller items.

  10. Would love to win your bag.
I've made a few myself, but none out of velvet. And certainly not out of your vintage jumper!

  11. Love it! Every time I read about your sewing adventures, I want to go buy a sewing machine. I am a perpetual reuser of paper gift bags though, so this cloth one would be great!

  12. Several comments:
Puffy bangs, HAH, I love the image that conjures! Not in the least because I was both a puffy bang coiffed hair person and a jumper wearing one too (especially when I was teaching 1st grade, pre-babies).

Love the velvet bag. It is very nice of you to give it away at your own expense.

Love Whoppers too. Do they come along with the bag?!! 🙂

Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  13. What a great idea - to repurpose clothes. I'm about to give away baby blankets, the soft fleece kind. Do you think they could be used to make gift bags, or would the material be too challenging with a sewing machine?

    1. I found an idea for getting more use out of baby blankets in an issue of Family Fun magazine. One mom made big floor pillows out of them. Her older children now sit or lay around on them on the floor while watching tv, reading, playing games, or whatever. I thought it was a great idea especially since we have oodles of baby blankets around but no babies anymore. 🙂

      1. My mom saved all of her maternity clothes from when she was pregnant with me and my brother and my Mema was able to make them into baby blankets to use when I have kids! Such a sweet idea! Now, the pressure they are putting on me to have a baby even though I've only been married a year and a half is not so sweet, but I'm sure they have good intentions! 🙂

  14. The bag is beautiful. I could definitely use this for my daughter since she is a lover of everything soft and girly, and especially since I can't sew. Thanks!

  15. Love the bag and, selfishly, think that I would keep it for myself to keep in my gym bag to put jewelry in when I work out 🙂 Although I think I've gotten better about not wasting food as I've gotten older, I def appreciate the Friday food waste posts. I try to think about how to repurpose food. Last week I had a pie crust and some buttermilk in the frig and started thumbing thru my cookbooks (the kind that churches sell, the best kind) and found a recipe for buttermilk pie! I made it and turned out great and felt good to be able to knock out some food I wasn't sure what to do with. Keep up the good work!

  16. OMG! This is gorgeous! I thought so last year, too, when I saw the bags. 🙂 My mom is all about homemade items, and while this isn't homemade by me, she'd love to receive her gift in it. Thanks, Kristen, for everything you do here!!

  17. What a nice giveaway - thanks for the opportunity! I went and checked the original post and loved the one made out of the pajama pants too. You've inspired me! I have a sewing evening scheduled with a friend this evening and I'm thinking I can look through my fabric (ie Goodwill clothing stash) and see what I come up with. Also - I knit and use Goodwill sweaters unraveled as a yarn source or if they aren't that kind of knit, but wool, they can be felted - another source of raw materials!

  18. I'm impressed that even as a High School-er, you were a practicing frugal girl and kept your jumper for all this time! I would love to win!

  19. My husband had always said I was a tight-wad and held on to a penny until Lincoln blinked. Not to mention making fun of my shopping at Goodwill, tag sales, etc. I now correct him and proudly tell him I am not tight but FRUGAL.
    God Bless,
    Elissa

  20. Ohhh... So pretty! I'd love to know all the wonderful things you can do with left over fabrics. I have tons of old fabric I've been keeping, but not enough ideas. I love this one. Thanks for taking the time you do to share with us.

  21. That bag is lovely. I've been hoping to make some gift bags this year, although it might get put off till next! 🙂

  22. What a fabulous way to repurpose old clothing! I just happened to have inherited a hideous velvet dress, in a bag of hand me downs last week. I believe there's just enough fabric there to make several gift bags. Thanks for the suggestion!

  23. I'd love to be included in the drawing for the bag. In fact you gave me an excellent idea! I'm going to look around through the clothing at church tonight (church gives away clothing for free once a month to the public) and see if I can find something that would make good bags to put the gifts for FIL & MIL in this year.

  24. I'm loving the image of the puffy bangs and the velvet jumper! I wore lots of jumpers, especially when I was pregnant. I'm thinking I'm just a bit too old for them now, though. 🙂

Gorgeous bag. I made a few myself last year from old flannel sheets. They're soft and effective, but not nearly as elegant as velvet.

  25. The bag is very pretty. I have your blog bookmarked and read it every morning. It inspires me and helps reinforce that nothing but good comes from living frugally...

    1. I am bringing back one of my favorite dresses ever, which I refused to get rid of even after my friends staged a velvet intervention! LOL

  26. I just want to say that this bag is lovely. Thank you for offering the directions for making it. This will be handy for wrapping those 'weirdly sized' items!

And if I should be the lucky 'random winner' of this give-a-way, you may keep the bag yourself (or give it to someone less-fortunate in your community) and donate the shipping costs to the charity you wrote about in yesterday's post.

  27. That bag is beautiful! I would love to win it. 🙂 My sewing skills are pretty non-existent as the last time I made anything was in junior high about 15 years ago. (Whoa!)

You've inspired me to consider learning how to do it again.

  28. My mom finally decided to switch to fabric gift bags this year, and I'm a little jealous of her growing collection. This would be a perfect way to start my own, and inspiration to get sewing!

  29. Your bag is beautiful! I'd love to win. I crocheted some small gift bags this year and they came out cute. I think they will hold up for many regifts too- better than paper gift bags!

  30. I would love the beautiful bag. I have every intention of making some this year but they will be strictly utilitarian and made from quilters cotton.

  31. Great idea! I have been using my daughters old and stained clothes and turned them into hair bows. I love upcycling!!!

  32. I need to look at your tutorial! The red with the silver bow are beautiful. Anyone would be excited to win this from The Frugal Girl!

  33. Great idea! Any other cheap ideas? Have you ever made homemade food (such as mustard or dressing) as gifts? How did you keep this a cheap option?

  34. What a great idea! I have some old dresses like that too that I keep for memories sake. Maybe it's time to make some new memories out them...hmmm!

  35. My sister and I are just starting to sew and this will make for a great project. The bag would make for a great gift bag for the holidays, especially for my five year old niece, great idea!

  36. Okay, now I'm totally inspired to try to find time to make some of these myself. I can't bear to throw away fabric so I have boxes and boxes in the attic
of scraps and big pieces. We were given some velvet clothes when my daughter was little (she's 13 now) and because of tiny stains or imperfections I never passed them along. Yep, they're in the attic too and they would be perfect for this.
I homeschool my kids also and you help me keep my focus when I feel like I
couldn't possibly add anything else to my busy schedule. So from one homeschool
Mom to another. Thank you for what you do!

  37. I've love to win; that's lovely. I have an old bridesmaid dress that's probably headed toward being a bunch of gift bags, but I don't see that happening this year.

  38. Thanks I would like to enter too but, I will have to send you something too. That is very pretty. I used to wear those too.

  39. A few years back I bought some Christmas-y fabric after Christmas when it was marked down to $1/yard and made a bunch of bags in assorted sizes. They're so handy for wrapping those strangely-shaped things. Mine aren't as beautiful as yours--mostly printed poly-cotton, and we use curling ribbon to tie them shut, but they're functional and add fun color and shapes under the tree! I should probably make some more; the kids like to grab them to wrap the gifts they're giving and then there are none left for me to use! (Or maybe I should buy and wrap my gifts before the last weekend.....)

  40. Very cool idea to use an old dress for fabric! hadn't thought of that, but i'm sure now I'll be sniping and sewing away ha!

  41. Beautiful! I would love to have a velvet bag for my mother-in-law's gift. Over the years I have made Christmas gift bags from cotton fabrics for our family (we've grown to 18 now in three generations) to avoid some of the paper waste that used to take over. I personalized them so we know whose is whose...son-in-law KC Chief's fabric, daughter appliqued heart on muslin, etc. The problem is making sure I get them all back so we can use them again the next year! 😉

  42. GREAT looking bag...well done, would love it! but even if I don't win, maybe this will inspire me to finally make some of my own, even if not as velvety-fancy!

  43. This is beautiful. My sister in law would love to receive her small gift in this bag so that she may re-purpose it too!

  44. Your gift bag looks very upscale. Without reading this post, no one would guess it's a repurposed jumper from years gone by.

  45. I know it has nothing to do with it but do you do a real christmas tree or an artificial. I found myself wondering last night, though i love a real tree would it be worth buying an artificail one for the sake of the environment..... Any thoughts?

  46. Love the bag! I have four daughters so bags, purses, duffles they are all put to good use. I'm sure we would treasure it!

  47. I remember wearing jumpers like that "back in the day", too! So thanks for the trip down Memory Lane - and please count me in your give-a-way! Your bag is so pretty - would love to win it!

  48. That bag is stunningly beautiful. Seriously, I love the thought of gifting something to someone with a bag like that. I guess I should start going through all the fabric I have to see if I have some I can use to make one!

  49. Bags like this are such a great idea and I have a very old (we are talking 40 years here) velvet skirt in a trunk somewhere. So, if I don't win this, I just might make my own. It's green velvet and if I did win, the bags would be very festive together.

  50. I am pretty sure that I put my entry to win on the wrong page but maybe this will be the right one. I really want to urge you to make the children Bible book markers or something else special out of the dress so they would have it forever because it was their Dad's favorite dress that you wore!!!

  51. I would love to win - the bag looks so elegant. I want to make a few of my own, but its not going to happen this year with a newborn!

  52. Your website is one that I read everyday. I enjoy your honesty and simplicity. And I hope that I win your gift bag!

  53. Kristen (my sister's name is also Kristen ),
I don't often comment, but I really enjoy your newsletters, and all the fun frugal ways you find to re-purpose things. Wouldn't mind winning this one, it's a totally cute bag! Thanks for all the great ideas! ~Claudia

  54. I love the idea of resusing old clothes in new ways! What a fantastic idea and so very green of you! I would love to win this bag!

  55. I actually thought of your reusable gift bags last night as I was wrapping up a Christmas gift and thought I should make some of my own. Thanks for the inspiration.

  56. I would love to have that bag. I have several pieces of Christmas fabric leftover from different projects and plan to make gift bags but........none are velvet.....

  57. I would love to win the gorgeous velvet giftbag. Please enter me for the drawing, (I couldn't find my comment before, so I'm commenting again, not trying to cheat!!!
    Thanks, Trudy

  58. Love the homemade gift bag! The Japanese have a tradition of presenting gifts in "furoshiki", a square cloth with each opposite corner folded in and tied...the recipient would then return the furoshiki to the giver- with a small gift enclosed...recycling, indeed!

  59. The gift bag is lovely! I like this idea for gift wrap because I never seem to have boxes that are the right shape for wrapping - and it's not like I want to clutter up my house with odd-size boxes just in case I need them.

  60. Very very pretty! My finance said he would want to use it as a dice bag for his rpgaming!
I have a PO box in Alaska, but am unsure as to if that is what APO stands for, I have a feeling not... Still I would gladly help half the shipping if needed!

  61. I love repurposing items. I felt wool sweaters from the Goodwill and use for craft projects. Last year I gave felted wool coasters as gifts.

I cut apart my wedding dress(which I made myself and would not have fit either one of my daughters) and made bags for both my daughters to carry at their weddings. I still have enough fabric to make one for my granddaughter and another granddaughter if my youngest daughter ever has any girls.

  62. Enter me! I have been wanting fabric gift bags for a while. I know my husband would buy me a sewing machine if I just asked and then I could make my own...but then I'd actually have to follow through with my good intentions!

  63. I've been meaning to get around to crocheting some gift bags... maybe I'll get the time to do so 🙂

I love the velvet, although my sewing skills aren't quite as good as my crocheting skills 😛

  64. I'm in!! How sweet the bag is.

The jumpers reminds me of a velvet dress that was my moms. Every so often she would let me wear it and I felt sooo special!!!

    Patti

  65. What a great gift wrapping idea (and one that keeps on giving!

Here's a frugal story for you: I once found an old sewing machine at Salvation Army for $12. The idea was to have It on hand to hem pants and for the occasional swell craft project like this. A friend was collecting items to ship overseas to Ghana where she helps fund a school and orphanage. I mentioned my 2nd hand sewing machine and her eyes lit up. She reminded me that a woman could support her family as a seamstress if she had a machine like that. I loved my cheap thrift store find, but truthfully, I didnt use it enough to justify keeping it when it would do so much more good somewhere else. So off it went. I hope it's making a difference for someone.

  66. You always challenge my thinking. I'm not frugal by nature, but you are helping me mend my spendthrift ways.

  67. I love your site!! The gift bag is gorgeous and like everyone else, I would love to win it!! Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

  68. Thank you so much Kristen for the post on making gift bags. It would be wonderful to win the one you are offering. I have been enjoying your blog for several months now and have been inspired to implement so many of your ideas. Thank you for sharing your life and your family with your readers. You are an inspiration to many. Merry Christmas to you and your lovely family! God Bless!

  69. My mom makes something similar to these for children to carry their gifts home from our annual Christmas party. Her bags are bigger, of course, and have a handy drawstring. This year, I asked her if she'd make something festive to cover my sofa pillows for the holidays. She made some great sham-like slipcovers out of material she already had. I was super excited about the easy decorating, and I'll use them year after year.

  70. The bag is beautiful. Count me in as entered. I am inspired daily by your simplified, principled, organized life. Today my oldest son turned four. This would be a great gift FOR MOM 🙂

  71. Beautiful bag! I absolutely love that it is repurposed. Some of the gifts I have given this year go with the theme "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle". Clever, you are so very clever to keep something seeing that it has great potential for another use.

  72. This is too cute! I am so going to make these. You know half the time the gift is all about the wrapping/presentation and what could be cuter than these. I love it. Thanks again for the great ideas.

  73. This is beautiful. I love this idea, I have some leftover velvet from my wedding 12 years ago I have been saving. It would be wonderful to wrap gifts to each other in them each year.

  74. I've knitted a gift bag but that takes a while. I'd love to win this bag and now I have an idea of what to do with some scraps of velvet I've got laying around. Once I saw where you could use a rubber stamp and your iron to permanently press a design into velvet. That could be another use for your jumper!

  75. Thanks for posting this awesome giveaway! The bag is beautiful and would get lots of great use in our house!

  76. What a fabulous reuse project! And I totally had engagement pictures with pleated, high-waisted khakis and big hot-rolled hair!

  77. I would love to win a decorative bag made by you. This is such a special touch to gift giving.
    Sheila Payne

  78. Fun! My colors this year are red and silver. 🙂 And I TOTALLY had a jumper just like that about 12 years ago, only it was brown. Wish I had a pic to trade. haha!

  79. I love this bag! I seriously need to get out my machine which I scored for $8.00 at the Goodwill (had to buy a foot pedal off ebay) and learn to sew.

  80. I really love this bag and your reuse of beautiful fabric. Thanks for the tips and ideas. Merry. CHRISTMAS. THANKS FOR THE CHANCE TO WIN ONE.

  81. Kristin, you are so creative. I am just in awe of you for all you do (home schooling, cooking, blogging, photography, wife, mother, etc). I would love to have this cute bag you made. Blessings and prosperity to you and yours!!

  82. You are inspiring!!! My MIL always says her favorite hairstyle of mine was the one I had during our engagement photos. This was 15 years ago and I am not sure if this is a compliment??? But, I choose to look at it that way! 🙂 I hope I win your adorable creation!
