What we think of the Luxi mattress so far
Mr. FG and I have been sleeping on our Luxi mattress for several months now and you guys have been asking for an update. So, here you go!
We bought the Luxi because it's got a unique design that lets you flip the insides in various ways to switch between soft, medium, and firm. And you can get in in a split version so that each person can have the bed exactly the way they want it.
The mattress comes in a surprisingly small box, and once you free the mattress from its packaging, it puffs up to its normal size in just a few minutes.
(This part is pretty fun; the satisfaction level is up there with popping bubble wrap.)
A lot of mattresses have a funky smell for days, but Mr. FG and I both thought the Luxi was surprisingly low-odor.
The Luxi can go on a box spring or on a simple foundation. We opted to buy a bunky board for our bed frame, which is like a really, really short foundation.
So, what do we think?
Well, we decided to go ahead and upgrade to a king size bed, so that part is super fabulous. We feel a bit like we're on vacation, or at a hotel every night.
But that has nothing to do with the mattress, obviously!
We started out with our Luxi on medium, and then Mr. FG and I both thought we'd like to try the soft version. So, we unzipped the mattress, flipped the insides over, and tried it out.
While we both thought we'd love the soft side, neither of us did! Both of us got back aches, even me (and I hardly ever get back aches from lying in bed.)
We switched back to the medium firmness the very next night and have been sleeping on that ever since.
We haven't tried the firmest side of the mattress because neither of us is typically into firm mattresses!
Is the Luxi comfortable?
I am very, very comfortable sleeping on the Luxi; the medium is cushy without being too soft, and it's supportive enough without being uncomfortably hard.
Mr. FG is sleeping pretty well too, although he wishes that the mattress had a little bit more cush on top with firmness below. Like, maybe this would be the ultimate mattress if it had a pillow top on it.
Are we going to keep the Luxi?
If it were up to me, I'd say yes. But since Mr. FG is the one who typically has more trouble sleeping and more trouble finding a mattress that is comfy, the ultimate decision will be up to him, since I'll probably be happy with whatever.
We both thought we'd end up using the firmness-modulation aspect of the Luxi more than we have. Since we're both on the medium firmess side, I don't know that it was exactly necessary to buy a mattress with modification options. But it IS nice to have the option there, and it was nice to try the soft side and figure out that that definitely wasn't right for either of us!
Things I love:
- Luxi gives you a generous in-home trial period.
- If you don't want the mattress after the trial period, you can return it for a full refund. It really is a risk-free trial period (unlike Sleep Number's "free" trial period, which will cost you several hundred dollars at LEAST if you decide to do a return. Weird kind of "free", if you ask me.)
- Buying a mattress online is so much less stressful than visiting a mattress store. Brick and mortar mattress stores are frustrating and confusing and high pressure and it gives me great pleasure to bypass them in favor of giving my money to an online store that has good customer service.
At the time of the writing of this post, Luxi is running a $200 off sale, so this is a good time to buy.
(Not affiliated in any way...I don't stand to benefit in the slightest if you buy a mattress from Luxi).
____________
Hopefully I covered everything in the post, but if you have a question about the mattress, let me know in the comments and I'll do my best to answer.
P.S. So far, no one has gotten all six of the cookie answers correct! So if you haven't thrown your guesses in, there's still time. 😉 If no one's gotten it totally right by tomorrow, I'll pick the person who got closest first and email them the $50 Amazon gift card.

I have a question about returning the mattress, that I didn't see addressed on their website. How would you go about packing it for return? Seems impossible, after seeing how it arrives. Or do they pick it up?
We don't have a Luxi mattress, but like Mr. FG, we wanted a little more softness on top of our own mattress and ended up adding an egg crate mattress topper. That made the mattress just right -- so that might be something you could try.
How is the hot/cool factor? I've heard so many complaints about mattresses generating too much heat and I like to be warm but not hot.
They look pretty expensive. Do you think they are a good value?
And, it sounds like you're thinking you might return it at some point, will you write about that experience if it happens?
Thanks! I have been waiting for this post.
I have not been hot on this one like I was when we tried a memory foam mattress from Costco, so I'm relieved about that.
If we return it, I'll definitely blog about it!
Thanks for the update, Kristen!
We have been talking about replacing our 15 year old
mattress; it's becoming quite lumpy bumpy.
How did you dispose of your old mattress?
It was one we were trying from Costco, and they accept mattress returns...so they came and picked it up. Very easy.
This looks so neat! Mr. Picky Pincher and I would love to eventually upgrade to a king sized mattress, and I'm leaning more towards ordering an online mattress just to avoid the horrible mattress store salespeople (seriously, some of them are worse than car salesmen, I swear). It's good to know that this mattress does the trick! It'll be interesting to see how long it holds up, too.
Before you decide to return the mattress, Mr, FG might want to try the firm option. That might make the top feel a little more "cushiony" (not a word, I know), which sounds strange, but certainly worth trying before having to look for another mattress.
I thought the same thing. I didn't think I liked a firm mattress, but I slept on one and have decided it is for me! No more hip pain.
We've been looking into upgrading our current mattress, which we've had for about 6 years. It's definitely seen better days. We've been looking at the SleepNumber, which is incredibly comfortable (at least in store when we tried one out.) I'll have to give the Luxi a try!
We looked at the Sleep Number bed too, but man, their "risk-free" trial ends up being awfully expensive if you return the bed. That put a bad taste in my mouth.
We were all set to purchase the sleep number till we Googled the reviews on mold and mildew.
Thanks for updating, I like a firm mattress but hubby likes soft, so this might work for us
Yes, if you have different needs, this could be perfect!
There's a TV commercial here in Illinois now claiming that it is mandatory to replace mattresses every 8 years. I had never heard that. But I will say that I never knew how uncomfortable I was until we got a new mattress! It was at least 20 years old. The new one made a big difference and we bought a mid-priced one from a major manufacturer during great sale. It's harder to make the bed because it's much harder to lift or move the mattress, but it's worth it to not hurt so much every day!
I'm looking for comfortable, easy-care sheets with a nice, subtle pattern, maybe plaid, dots, stripes, nature images. Seems like I can only find solids these days. Any ideas?
Jenny: I've had really good luck with LL Bean's sheets and they have nice patterns and colors.
I invested a lot of money 4 years ago into a Tempurpedic. It has adjustable head and feet and 4 different massage settings. I paid $4000 for it,but hands down was the best money ever spent. I have some health issues and sometimes a lot of body aches and pains. It is a 4inch thick memory foam that looks like no one has ever slept in it. On my harder days physically you can find me in bed on the computer, reading, folding clothes etc. I would do it all over again.
I think they make mattress pads that are pillow-top like. You could try one of those or maybe one of those egg carton like pads would give it a little extra cush on top of the firmness.
My sister's guest bed is a mattress that arrived rolled up in a box from Walmart. I doubt it would hold up to every night use, but it works great for a guest bed, and it even had it's own frame.
That said, I dread replacing our mattress. I got a luxury brand at a discount house that takes the floor models and broken sets from high end stores and sells them. I love it, but my husband complained for several years that it sometimes made his back and kidneys hurt, so he started sleeping on a mid-grade mattress in the guest bedroom to see how he liked it. He said it was great, and wanted to switch the mattresses, since they were the same size, but he broke his collar bone and had to keep sleeping in the guest room so I wouldn't accidentally roll over on him at night. Now he says the guest room mattress is uncomfortable and that he never really liked it (!), and he likes our own bed's mattress. How on earth we are to pick a mattress out when we finally have to get a new one, I don't know.
I never thought it through until a conversation about mattresses was had recently - what do they do with the mattresses returned after the trial period (at Luxi or elsewhere)? A friend was told "they" (not Luxi) basically throw it away, or it is destroyed (not entirely sure what that means).
Do you know anything about this? If a trial mattress is, indeed, thrown away or destroyed, how would that factor into your personal decision making process for getting a new mattress? Asking because I'm curious; not judging.
Also, a few HassleLess Mattress locations have popped up in our area. There are no employees - so you go in & try out the mattresses at your leisure without pressure from a salesperson. I haven't been myself, so I don't know the exact logistics of it, but I can see it being a worthwhile option for those not wanting to be pestered or otherwise deal with salespeople.
I'm not sure what Luxi specifically does. I know some manufacturers like Casper either donate the mattress or recycle it, and hopefully Luxi does too. I guess I should ask!
About what happens to returned mattresses, I recall a television story that aired several years ago that did an uncover type story on this. They found at least one company that resold them as new. I don't recall which store it was but it stuck in my mind about possibly getting a used mattress when expecting a new one! One would hope returns are sold somewhere as used or donated. If destroyed, it isn't very environment friendly. Companies that get high numbers of returns and do it for free have to make up the cost somewhere.
We bought a sleep number bed last year. The store experience wasn't bad at all surprisingly and we went a couple times before we bought one. The salesman actually suggested when to come back to get a better sale price! We first thought it was way too expensive but when we compared to others that we liked it wasn't much more and the others weren't adjustable. The mattress is super light so very easy to move. We bought an optional cooling pad and heating pad and we love both. The heating pad is awesome in the winter. We'll keep this bed for a long time. No affiliation to sleep number - just a satisfied customer.
$1300 for a Luxi King sized mattress?
Plastic surgery Nose job?
Are you certain this is The Frugal Girl website?
I bought a queen sized Perfect Sleeper from Posturepedic for $589 for the complete set (mattress & box spring).
What happened to your frugality?
Just wonderin'?
The nose job? Uh huh.........uh huh.........
I'm not sure if maybe you didn't read the post about my nose surgery, but it was a medically advisable procedure and was covered by my insurance (thanks to Lisey's tonsillectomy, we'd met our deductible for the year already). I couldn't breathe through my nose, my surgeon fixed that, and I'm so grateful.
There are cheaper mattresses out there than the Luxi, but I am not all about paying the lowest price for the cheapest thing. If an item works better and lasts longer, I'm willing to spend more for that. If you don't have the money for a more expensive item, then I'd not recommend buying it. But if you have the money to invest in an item that works better for you and lasts longer, I think that's a smart choice.
If you don't agree with my choices, that's fine. But it would be great if you could use kinder words to share your comments.
It's clear that she doesn't really read your blog or she would have known your surgery was medically necessary and that you believe in paying more for longer lasting items.
Such un-Harmonic words! Thank you, Kristen, for sweetening them as only you could. I hope Alice sticks around long enough to absorb some of your brand of kindness.
She's actually not a new commenter or reader.
More than one reader uses alternate names/email addresses when they want to leave critical comments, although I'm not sure why anyone bothers because IP addresses don't change when you change your username. So, it's not like I'm confused about who is leaving comments. 😉
Wow, Kristen, I'm super-impressed that you actually replied to that comment and didn't just delete it. You are always so clear that people should make the right choice for them at the time, and that it can vary depending on so many factors. Sorry that this troll is throwing you shade.
Agreed. I find that comment unkind too.
We need a new mattress. It's my husband's from when he was in 8th or 9th grade! Mattresses are so expensive, though, and it's such a long-term purchase. Thanks for an honest update and review!
I've been trying out a new Tuft and Needle mattress this fall. If you wind up not keeping the Luxi, you might consider giving it a try! It doesn't have the adjustment options you mentioned, but it is super comfortable and I love it!
I agree with Bethany. We've had our Tuft and Needle bed for over a few years now and we love it. I'd say it's medium-firm. At first my husband complained about there only being one option, but since then we have gotten used to it. This company cuts out the middle man, so their prices are great. We have a queen and got a full for our niece. I'll never pay in store retail prices again. Oh, and if you don't like the mattress they donate it to foster families! Or at least they did at the time I got mine!
Try Brooklyn Bedding! We got one of theirs and it is soft on top and firm underneath. Same trial period/returns/etc. We have had ours for about 8 months now and love it!
Does anyone have any thoughts about the mattresses from Ikea?
Lisey has one and it's pretty good. I'd say the edge support is pretty poor, though...you do slide right off if you try to sit on the edge.
Hello, first time reading your blog. I have heard from other bloggers that if you are not 100% confy with the firmess of the mattress you can email or call them and they will send you a special layer for the top (like a mattress topper) made for you for free until you are fully satisfied. This is because they domt want you to return the mattress of course.
We reviewed Luxi mattress as well and rate it 9.3/10. Compared with other online mattresses only have 1 firmness scale. Luxi has 3 firmness scale to choose, and during our testing we found it's more bouncy than traditional memory foam mattresses, a great choice for under $1,000
Good luck trying to return a Luxi mattress. It is impossible. I've been trying for 9 weeks to return mine because no matter how I layered it, it just didn't work for me. They refuse to accept a return. Their latest explanation is that I didn't layer it correctly. Well, I've switched those foam layers every which way but it doesn't make a difference. Do not do business with this mattress firm. They are simply scam artists looking to walk away with your money.
I was originally pretty stoked to try out this bed in CALI King as my wife is a firm stomach sleeper, and I'm a medium side and back sleeper. We tried every variation we could but never could find anything that was even tolerable for more than a day or two. and the weird no-go zone in the middle is less than desirable. I asked for a return in the middle of last year and was contacted (after over a month of emails back and forth with customer service) by a gentleman that wanted to try sending us differently configured layer to see if he could make us something that worked. I agreed, however never heard back or received anything from them. So again after phone calls and emails, I finally just asked for a refund. They agreed and I filled out paperwork, set up the donation that they coordinated, and took photos as requested. The Only reply I've gotten from them since february is that the refund is in process. So now I've donated the mattress AND haven't received a refund. Customer service has been nearly non existent since purchase last year. I based my purchase on all of the rave reviews, but I can see no possible way that there are great interactions with LUXI. At least I haven't seen it.
UPDATE:
I have since received my refund. I also discussed with the owner and he acknowledged that they are going through growing pains and they working to improve. I wish them all the best, but it just wasn't a fit for me.
I would be very careful about buying a Luxi mattress. I’m having the same problem with trying to return. Customer service is pretty much nonexistent and when you do finally get a response they just continue to come up with excuses as to why they haven’t started the refund process. They will tell you that EVERYONE loves their LUXI mattress and nobody returns this prefect mattress. And god forbid anybody not like it! Please give me a refund on my mattress LUXI!!
I have yet to receive a refund. They finally sent me an authorization return form and I donated the mattress. This has been over 6 weeks ago and I haven't gotten a response since. I'm begging everyone DO NOT BUY!
