Food Waste Friday | New! Improved! With a FWF Button! (plus, Liseys' new project!)

I think I just might have broken my exclamation point button with that title.
!!!!!
Nope, it still works.
Ok. So, the first marvy-fab thing for today is that those of you who participate in Food Waste Friday can now grab a fancy-schmancy button to perk up your posts. If you copy and paste the following code into your Food Waste Friday post, this little graphic will appear.
If you blog on WordPress, just make sure you're in html mode when you copy and paste the code, or it won't work properly.
A thousand thanks to reader Jen from Dear Mommy Brain for gently nudging me to get this done and for sending me the code pattern.
The second newsy bit I have for you is that Lisey and I have been working on a baking blog. It's called Baking With Lisey because Lisey loves to bake/cook and I'm a disaster at making time to help her with it. So, I'm taking an approach similar to the one I'm using with my crafting negligence, except Lisey and I started a whole new blog, and we'll be posting recipes once a week.
Hopefully this will help me make time to bake/cook with Lisey, and hopefully you'll have fun watching us! Since we'll only be posting once a week or so, I highly recommend subscribing via email...that way you'll always know when we've got something new up. Go on over and check it all out!
Alrighty! On to food waste.
I have some grape tomatoes that went bad (not dry, just bad...you know the way they get thin-skinned and really mushy?), and part of a lemon that got moldy.
And I think I might have a few spinach leaves that are slimy, but I'm feeling too lazy to go check right now.

Joshua's 365 post: The Answer!

I had a major cupboard clean out, meaning I chucked and chucked and chucked...but mainly dried beans ! Aged and hard.
Fridge all photographed as usual - I'll be adding the FWF button is a few mins as I always give a shout out to FWF for the original inspiration behind No Waste Tastes Great. No waste for me this week just a two-tier 40th Birthday cake to decorate this PM. Busy day!
Can't wait to check out Lisey's blog, my nearly 7-year-old will enjoy it I'm sure - we'll both'll love getting inspiration on the baking front!
FWF button on and looking good! Thank you it makes my weekly link back so much nicer!
ps - added some html code to get it to centre align on the page when in HTML mode.
I cleaned my refrigerator door. It was in better shape than I thought it would be. Looking forward to seeing what you and Lisey will bake up.
This is my first time linking to the food wast friday, I am so excited. Only had 2 things wasted in the fridge this week, for me that is good. I will be adding the food waste button to my blog, thanks for that.
Yay! New button proudly displayed 🙂
I lost another satsuma and my yogurt.
Excited to follow the baking blog!
Don't know if you've ever tried freezing grape tomatoes when they start to go bad/wrinkly/thin-skinned. I throw them into a freezer bag, and then when I think of it, toss them into a stir-fry or crock-pot recipe where they can "pop." I don't even notice that they had started to turn, and saves from the waste!
I just linked up for the first time. I feel like I've been bungee jumping or something. There is something strangely, and surprisingly liberating about posting about food waste! Thank you SO much for sharing this wonderful idea. I love hearing your frugal tips and living experiences every day. Seriously, you make food waste look good with your amazing skills as a photographer. I didn't even know that was possible!
I just want to thank you for spelling out exactly how to use the button and letting us know about doing it in the HTML mode! Otherwise I probably never would have figured it out myself!
I second that! I would not have known how to use the button. Suddenly a whole new world is opening up!
I couldn't get the button centered, I'm not sure why. Maybe I'll figure it out by next week.
I was able to use up a lot of thing that would have been thrown out, including an icky Stir-Fry transformed into a delicious soup (pictures on my blog).
Happy Friday!
If you want the button centered just make sure you have center tags at the beginning and end of the HTML that look like this.
HTML
They are actually already printed in the code above, so that is a peculiar that it didn't automatically center. Let me know if you need any help.
Thanks Jen, I'm not sure what the problem is. In the code it looks like it should be centered. I went to the "visual" tab and centered it the not techy way and it worked.
I'll just make sure I do that from now on. I'm new to blogging and just starting to figure this world out. I've got a lot to learn. ;0)
I used code to centre mine - worked ok 🙂
I did a major clean out of my freezer and was sad to see all of the food that had been in there for so long I didn't remember buying it:(
Tonight I clean out my fridge. I have already made a menu and shopping plan for the next week so I am hoping to come back next Friday with very little waste!
Still waste-free in 2012! We've had some VERY close calls, though. 🙂
I like to saute borderline tomatoes with garlic & seasonings and put them over chicken. And add cheese. There's always cheese. 🙂
Wow, no waste so far in 2012? That's awesome! Congratulations!
That's impressive.
LOVE IT!!!! So glad I could help.
You're so good to only have those things go bad! This week was my absolute worst since sharing our food waste with you. Next week will be better! Have a great week and thanks so much for the linky!
Oh! I'm so excited for Lisey's new blog! I'll subscribe today! Are you still going to do Wednesday Baking here, or will all the baking move over there?
I had a bad, bad, very bad food waste week. An entire package of ground beef, some potatoes, a tomato, and some unknown yucky things from the back of the fridge. Next week will be better.
Oh boy, not a good week for food waste around here. Washington was hit with a heavy snow last week, rare for us. Followed by an ice storm, even more rare. Our power went out on Thursday and didn't come back on till early this past Tuesday. I ended up throwing out just about everything in our fridge and freezer. Thankfully since I shop weekly and it was towards the end of the week there wasn't a lot in there.
As a moral and morale issue, I declare that weather-related disasters don't count. What could you have done about it, eh?
We wasted Celery, some groundbeef and a bunch of leftovers that managed to find themselves at the back of the frig and very gross in nature. Annoyed mostly about the meat. It was expensive grass-fed ground beef. Mom didn't use it and left it to thaw in the sink,I tried to save but it wasn't successful.
I really like the button, very nice! I've noticed when we eat out more, we have less food waste, shifting the burden to the restaurants. I think I need to start planning weekly menus.
I've been neglected my FWF posts because I've started cleaning out my fridge at odd times like a Tuesday at 11 PM. So a picture just isn't happening right now. I promise to get better! Maybe the button will help!
So this week I wasted: some leftover Chinese that was bad to begin with, some random little bits from dinners (why do I insist on keeping things that aren't even a full portion?), a lemon that went strangely hard very fast, and about a 1/2 cup of buttermilk that was leftover from before Christmas.
I did manage to save a few bananas and get them in the freezer, and I took my applesauce that had been languishing in the fridge and bagged it up and stuck it in the freezer.
You did great this week! I had a terrible week but now I'm ready for another month with a clean pantry and fridge.
I would love to follow Lisey's blog, but my virus thingy doesn't seem to like it . . . :0(((
J x
I didn't do very well this week. I wasted half a pack of green sprouts for the second time in just a few weeks. 🙁
Thank's for the button!
I love the linky! I lost black beans, green beans a small amount and some homemade yogurt that I tried to sweeten with agave for the first time and no one liked it. They prefer sugar or honey 🙁 Boo. And it was from Organic milk too.
Only one thing but it was a doozy: a 4 c. Tellfresh of tomato sauce, brown rice and home-cooked beans. I meant to spiffy it up then freeze for several lunches but it kept being put off (notice how my language suddenly shifted to the passive voice?). From a cost perspective it was less than $1 but it's still 4 c. of food that went to the compost pile instead of my stomach.
Some lettuce, especially the boston lettuce. For some reason it developed a real brown rotten spot and had to toss quite a few leaves. But used the rest of it, as we had a dinner salad one night. Let's see, I think an orange or two and that is about it.
In my half hearted attempt to clean out the pantry so far I have discovered two bags of extremely old tortilla chips that are ridiculously stale. But that is it so far.
You're always so good at this using all your food thing! Baking blog? Fun!
Thanks so much for the FWF button! I've been hoping you'd make one! I had a bad lemon this week, too. Sometimes when a recipe only calls for part of one or just the zest, it's hard to find a use for the rest.
Kristen,
Thanks for this great site, promoting other bloggers and helping us to spend our money wisely!
I don't have our camera...it's been in another city for over three months and I refuse to buy another one until I make one good solid attempt to retrieve the one I have (even though it is all but totally broken). So that means I don't have pics for food waste Friday BUT I can tell you that I have cleaned out my freezer. Do I have to talk about the mass quantity of freezer-burnt food? Well, anyway, hopefully I don't waste food again because we probably lost over $50 in food. Ugh... But if I do and I have a camera, I'll join the party!
Our blog is about being a God-loving, frugal, simple family in Louisiana! Check us out!
I hate to see my food go to waste in the fridge. Its like watching the dollar bills rotting in front your eyes.
Wow, great visual!
I didn't do a blog post this week as I was busy cleaning like mad to get our house ready to meet with a home management company (we're trying to move out of state and are going to rent our house). But the only thing I wasted were some dough balls that were meant to be made into tortillas. Instead, they sat in my fridge for three weeks and molded. 🙁
I love the button and am looking forward to using it for next week!
Finally linked up. I was all ready to link up on Friday with some fabulous news and then made a heartbreaking discovery in my fridge.
I love the new button. I got that up straight away. A little bit of the Frugal Girl on my blog. I feel like a real groupie now 🙂
All right, this week's weird food-gone-bad:
From the freezer, a bag of okra (I don't even remember buying this! I have never cooked with okra in my life!), and some cheese pieces I put in there after the 4th of July. In the fridge, a few rubbery apples I missed last week, some slimy red pepper slices, and a few slimy salad greens. While cleaning out a box of assorted junk and papers from college (um, graduated in 2004), I also found a packet of instant oatmeal and a packet of takeout duck sauce.
On the other hand, I did eat up: baked beans, some cucumber and tomato, and the vast majority of my salad greens. I think to keep motivated, I need to remind myself of the things I MIGHT have wasted if I were being less vigilant!
