Food Waste Friday-I didn’t waste any vegetables…

Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. I started doing this in March of 2008 to help motivate myself to use up my food instead of wasting it and it’s been very effective. Since it helped me so much, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.

This week, all of my waste is meat related.  I have one deli slice of ham, which I forgot about (there was cheese on top of it!).  A quarter of a chicken breast is inhabiting the Pyrex container (there were three, and I did manage to eat two of them).  And then I have some pizza.  Somehow, we got behind on eating pizza, and while these might still be safe to eat, pizza gets dry and rubbery after it’s been in the fridge for a while, and I really don’t want to eat it!

Maybe next week I can avoid wasting veggies while also managing to avoid wasting anything else.

That stuff isn’t so bad. I know what you mean about pizza getting dry and rubbery!

My mom used to put leftover pizza in the freezer and then stick it in the toaster oven when we wanted a snack. It came out really well and actually was a lot crispier the second time around.

I’ve decided that cilantro is a lost cause. I can either spend twice as much to get half the amount and not compost some of it, or spend half as much and compost some. I pick the latter.

This isn’t the only resource dilemma I’ve run into recently. Twice as much Thai fish sauce for half the price, more than I can use in the 4 years before it goes bad. Oscar Meyer Deli Creations sandwiches for $.25 each – except for the sauce not worse than buying deli meat but ouch that extra packaging. Running the dryer twice to shrink a too-large sweater to my size instead of buying a new one. How does one select between different types of waste?

Wasted pizza! I’ll be shocked if that ever happens in this house.

We had yucky meat too. The last remains of a disappointing dinner.

I don’t think that I have ever thrown out pizza, and we have it every Friday. I will admit thought that it is me who doesn’t let it go to waste. I LOVE pizza!!!

How did that double post get there? Kirsten, if you have the ability, I’d appreciate it if you could delete the duplicate and this post as well. Your readership thanks you.

Sorta off topic, but I’m surprised that you buy pre-packaged deli meat… I find it to be much more expensive than just getting a 1/2 lb of sliced meat from the deli. Knowing you, I bet you had some great coupon for it though :-P

well done on the veggies. We wasted evaporated milk this week. I was annoyed with myself because I’d even put it in a see through container, but I just watched it grow mould – why do we do that??!!
