What I Spent, What We Ate | I might have a taco problem.

What I Spent

I'm clockin' in at $168 this week. And I'm without a grocery photo.

Sorry about that.   I did buy food, promise. 😉

What We Ate

Monday

Grilled shrimp, mashed potatoes, and salad.

kabobs

Tuesday

I'd redeemed my Swagbucks for a P.F. Changs gift card and we went out to use it.   The restaurant was pretty busy, so we had to wait a while.   But our waitress was great, and we weren't in a hurry, so we didn't mind waiting.

She was super appreciative of our patience, and she gave us copious amounts of fortune cookies at the end of our meal as thanks.   So, that was pretty awesome. 😉

Wednesday

Fish tacos!   Here's the fish taco recipe  that's my fave (and it requires no frying. Whee!)

Thursday

Um, we might have had tacos again.

grilled chicken tacos

But I totally do not have a Tex-Mex addiction.   I can quit anytime I want.

Friday

I haven't decided for sure, but I do know that we're not having tacos.

Even I have my limits, people.

______

What did you eat this week?   Any tacos? 😉

  1. My girl would love it if tacos were to appear here. This week I have tried to ensure that we eat at home. We have had roast chicken and salad, tonight the chicken was turned into sandwich filling, sushi has been enjoyed, BLT's have happened too. I am determined that we will waste less. There has been a lot of fruit and avocado too.

Since we four cities from home and near Costco I joined this week. My initial spend was not well planned. But as I learn the store my savings will have to increase or the membership will go.

  2. I had some flight delays coming back from vacation, so our food menu wasn't planned. I know I spent about $65, but then hubs went out and bought more supplies.

    Monday - frozen pizza.
Tuesday - hubs surprised me by making roasted vegetables (butternut squash, potato, red onion, bell pepper....) and I requested we serve it with rice... and a spare packet of Chik-Fil-A sauce! 😀
Wednesday - cheese ravioli with ham, pepper, and onion in a white sauce
Thursday - I had leftover ravioli and hubs ate a large Caesar salad (power greens mix with lots of dressing), and we both ate a ciabatta roll on the side
Friday - no idea, because I have to travel for work; hubs might have the last of the ravioli

  3. I think I finally learned this weekend that most of my food shopping should be done in BJ's Warehouse. I think I am going to reconfigure my budget so I can do a large shopping at the beginning of the month and use the local food stores for fill ins.

For $88 I was able to buy so much meat and staple items I was amazed.

All meals were made an eaten home this week and that always makes me happy.

Monday: Stew with carrots & potatoes. Tossed Salad (tomatoes & cucumbers were from the garden) Garlic Bread

Tuesday: Chicken Enchiladas. Rice. Tomato & Cucumber Salad

Wednesday: Cheese Steak Sandwiches with Peppers, Onions & Cheese. French Fries.

Thursday: Leftovers (this has become a weekly thing, nothing goes to waste this way)

Friday: Pasta & Broccoli (broccoli is cooked and then sautéed in olive oil & garlic)

  4. You have a taco problem? How about we "taco" 'bout it?

    I couldn't resist. 🙂

    This week we ate:

Monday: Chicken wings with chips. Not healthy, but delicious and just what we needed.

Tuesday: BBQ chicken sandwiches with corn. It turns out that we only had one chicken breast, so I defrosted some pulled pork for myself. Not too shabby! I topped mine with pickled jalapenos and it was awesome!

Wednesday: Spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread. The marinara and meatballs were homemade. 🙂

Thursday: We went out to eat for Mr. Picky Pincher's professional society officer induction. We ended up paying $50 for the two of us, but the money went to charity, so we're not too upset by that.

Friday: Ugh, this weekend is going to be crazy with house renovations. I think I'll whip up some hot dogs for everybody, since my father in law will be in town helping us.

  5. Well, this week was kind of odd.
Monday, I didn't feel well. We had a bacon-tomato-spinach sandwich, which my husband cooked.
Tuesday I made eggplant parmesan. I definitely felt better!
    Wednesday was leftover eggplant parmesan.
Thursday was my daughter's birthday, so we had her and her little family over for dinner which was: home made chicken and dumplings, acre peas, and fried squash n' onions, plus homemade ice cream, all her favorites. This was after I worked a nine hour day -- I must be crazy. I knocked myself out doing all that, so tonight will be much, much simpler and easier. I'll be keeping my granddaughter for the night tonight, but she's prepared to eat something light after last night. She's 10 and easy to please.

  6. This week we ate salad. Salad for lunch, salad for dinner! We did have fajita tacos out last night with our church friends 🙂

  7. Lolz, tacos are my family's go-to dinner. I batch cook beef and black beans. I freeze them in sandwich-size containers. I load up on tortillas and pre-cooked shells when they're on sale. I stock up on shredded cheese when that's on sale and freeze it too. I use cabbage because it lasts longer than lettuce and always have tomatoes on hand. Hmmm, Grocery Outlet had Muir Glen organic salsa on sale for a buck, so I bought 36 jars. Cholula is from Costco, two at a time, naturally.

Taco Tuesday can be held on any day that ends in "y". This week it was Monday. It is often followed by Burrito day, especially when there's lots of shredded cabbage left over.

It's also my favorite meal to serve a group, which we do often. On those occasions, I make Pico de Gallo and Guacamole. From scratch, of course.

If I alternated between tacos and pizza every other day, my posse would never complain.

    So, yeah, tacos.

  8. Soooooo, we are not supposed to eat tacos daily? Who knew?!! lol

M - Baked chicken, mashed potatoes, broccoli with lemon
T - Si and turkey meatballs, Salad
W - Leftovers as the refrigerator was overrun with them!
T - Chicken strips, mixed vegetables, applesauce with strawberries
F - Planning on burgers, oven fries and fruit

  9. Monday: my husband had a meeting at church so the girls and I had a hodgepodge meal from the freezer consisting of pierogies and fish fingers with sautéed bell peppers.

Tuesday: chicken thighs baked in the oven with mashed potatoes and random raw vegetables on the side

    Wednesday: leftovers from Tuesday

Thursday: chicken burrito bowls using the rest of the leftover chicken thighs. Yum!!!

Friday: tonight I am making sweet potato and black bean enchiladas there will definitely be sour cream and guacamole on the side along with a green salad. Can Not Wait.

I'm with you on the Tex-Mex thing... it is definitely a delightful addiction!! Guacamole makes anything better.

  10. I agree with several of the posts....tacos are awesome!! I think we have tex-mex at least once a week in my house. It pleases everyone! And such an easy meal that even my husband can pull it off (he does not like to cook very much ;-).

  11. I could eat Mexican food every. single. day. Happily!

Restock week after eating down the fridge prior to leaving on a multi week trip. Spend was $95 for two, but that included several on-sale bulk meat, chicken and fish purchases, which when repackaged and frozen will last for weeks/months.

M - Salmon, roasted Brussel sprouts, brown rice
T - Roast chicken, mashed red potatoes, asparagus
W - Chipotle cicken enchiladas, brown rice, salad
Th - Veggie fajitas, rice, steamed yellow squash
Fr - Stuffed poblano chiles, Mex Caesar salad

I believe I just counted three Mex- inspired meals out of five. 😉

  12. I love tacos so this article was a hit. I may have to just stop by the store on the way home and grab the ingredients!

  13. Hi Kristen,
No tacos here, but since my hubby is an amazing fisherman, I can see your recipe making it to our table very soon. Thanks for the great recipe.
Our shopping/ menu runs from Wednesday to Tuesday, so far we have eaten
Wed-Steamed fish with basmati rice and Asian greens
Thur-is our pizza night - takeaway, it's our little treat
    Fri-chicken and mushroom pasta bake
Sat-today, there is enough of the pasta bake left over for tonight as well
Sun- I am going to make a beef and red wine casserole with cheese and parsley dumplings in the slow cooker
Mon- will probably be left overs, again
Tues- tempura fish (whiting ) basmati rice and Asian greens
I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

  14. It's Saturday so I have to ask - was it Taco Pizza night?

I think your Tacos Twice is better than my Smorgasborg Several Times this week. It was at least twice for dinner and some serious last-minute scrounging for brown bag lunch and even so, I had canned soup twice. Not too bad in that I didn't eat out instead but pretty sad on the planning front.

There's even a good reason to clear out some freezer space. In a few weeks I'm visiting friends who raise meat fowl and hogs for sale, and I want to get bring home a cooler-ful. So lots of chicken legs, pork chops, and burgers in my future. I wonder if I could get a friend to stash a turkey for me, in case my nephew has time to visit and make a turducken. Before he moves to Norway. Urk!

  15. We not only eat a lot of tacos but burritos & carnetas also, love them all.
Roasted chicken, pulled pork, pancakes & sausage, hot beef sandwiches, cream of broccoli soup. So it was a good week here in, definitely ate in all week. I'm really working on waste but having trouble with my CSA boxes. Do to the amount of rain this season & being organic things are not holding very long

  16. Love tacos... I have a special secTion in my recipe binder just for tacos.

It was a rough week. Too many evening things.

Sunday: spaghetti with meat sauce with stir fried zucchini and garlic bread ( cooking light recipe)
Monday - Beef tacos from America's test kitchen
Tuesday - Salisbury meatballs over mashed potatoes from skinny taste with green beans
Wednesday - lime marinated chicken with brown rice and tomatoes/cucumbers (weight watchers recipe)
    Thursday - ate out Boundin.
Friday - ate at a French cafe
Saturday - calzone pizza with a side salad

  17. I'm sorry to hear that you feed your family tilapia fish.
Are you aware that it is the worst, most polluted fish to eat?
It's dangerous to your health. The farmed fish is fed chicken and pig poop and other byproducts.
Plus a crap load of chemicals.

Tilapia is worse than eating bacon!

    Here's the proof:
    http://www.eatthis.com/tilapia-is-worse-than-bacon

You'd be better off getting wild caught, frozen flounder, which is sold at Aldi at a fair price.

Now you know. I hope you will correct your ingredients in the future.

  18. The only "taco problem" I can imagine is not having enough tacos. Tacos (or tex-mex in general) are the one thing our entire family could eat daily. What's not to love?
