What I Spent, What We Ate | Starting off with an expensive bang

What I Spent

Let's see...I popped by the produce stand and spotted a box of bruised apples.   So of course I brought them home. 😉

I paid $15 for 33 pounds.

I also paid a few dollars for 6 ears of corn.

I was nearly out of frozen berries, so I trekked on over to Costco, which I spent $110.92.

And I spent $116.62 on other regular grocery shopping.

That puts me at $245 for the week, which is a little on the whoa side of things.

But I had a low spending month in August, and I just know that Costco weeks are always going to be pricey, so I'm not worried.   I think my weekly average is still gonna be jusssst fine.

What We Ate

Monday

I spent my day staining my deck and painting my laundry room, but luckily I had some bratwurst in the freezer and they were super fast and easy to grill for dinner.

bratwurst

I think we had a salad with the brats but my memory is failing me a bit.

Tuesday

I had to go to a meeting, and I left a taco salad at home for Mr. FG and the kids.

Wednesday

I defrosted some pulled pork which we ate on buns.   We had sauteed green beans as a side, along with veggie straws and apple slices.

Thursday

Let's see...the girls and I ate Apple Pfannekuchen, Joshua ate a leftover pulled pork sandwich, and Mr. FG ate two slices of pizza that he picked up on the way home.

It was a haphazard night.

They happen.

Friday

I haven't made deep dish pizza in a while and I'm wondering if maybe it's time for a batch...

How to make Deep Dish Pizza at home

And that does it for my weekly food report!

  1. There has been a roast dinner of pork. This was turned into sweet and sour pork. Tonight was chicken rolls. We have also had steak and veg. One night was sushi. The last meal was a lamb and vegetable Morrocan dish.

    1. So proud of myself. Just started meal planning and grocery shopping with a goal of little food waste, no takeout and no restaurant eating for one month! One week in and so far so good. Thanks for the inspiration. Karen

  2. Hamburgers and fresh veggies/fruit, roast Parmesan chicken and broccoli, spaghetti and green beans, leftover roast, rice, and peas. It's been a hectic week so kept it very simple. Tonight will be homemade pizza....or frozen pizza

  3. Let's see if I can remember...

M - Tuna melts with applesauce and a salad.
T - is our weekly family dinner night. My mother and I are in a bowling league, so we meet in the town I grew up in and have dinner with my younger brothers and my step dad.
W - BBQ chicken sliders with macaroni & cheese and roasted potatoes.
Th - We went to my MIL for dinner and had some delicious meatloaf.
F - Tonight will be haphazard for us as we have a million errands. I'm going to pop some frozen french bread pizzas in the oven and serve them with homemade applesauce (We get 1/2 bushel at our local orchard for $15)

We are in a tight financial situation (of our choosing, hammering out our debt), so I have set a budget of only $50 per week on groceries for our family consisting of my husband and I, our 3 y/o daughter and two dogs. People look at me like I'm crazy! But, we've made it work, we still have delicious and healthy food.

  4. That deep dish pizza looks awesome! I want to do more homemade pizzas, but Mr. Picky Pincher seems to dislike most of the doughs we've tried out.

    This week we ate...

Monday: Homemade Salisbury steak with roasted parsnips and broccoli. This was REALLY GOOD! I'd never had a parsnip before; it was like a carrot-sweet potato kind of flavor. It was weird at first, but it turned out to be pretty good!

Tuesday: I found a crazy recipe in a library cookbook that I just had to try out. I made a Cajun crawfish macaroni and cheese casserole. I'd never eaten crawfish before, so it was a real treat! I topped mine with some hot sauce, and boy howdy was it good!

Wednesday: We were supposed to have linguine alfredo, but ended up eating out with Mr. Picky Pincher's family. Oops.

Thursday: This was quite a spendy day for us. We finally closed on our house, and ended up eating out for every meal! Yikes! We did pick up Pappadeaux for dinner, and I treated myself to a very fancy king crab with a crème brulee as a dessert. It wasn't frugal, but we were able to celebrate our big life moment with family, so I call that a win.

Friday: I'm not sure what we're eating tonight. We're starting work on the house, so something quick. I did defrost meat to make Swedish meatballs with a dill sauce, so hopefully I have time for that.

  5. I came down with a cold so my appetite and my energy levels came and went. So sometimes I cooked and sometimes I didn't.

    Saturday - Chicken tacos

Sunday - Steak Frittes, preceeded by raw cut up veggies and followed by fresh peaches from a neighbor's tree. Yum!

Monday - can of soup with crackers

Tuesday - Steak with a salad made from sliced garden tomatoes, blue cheese, olive oil and balsamic. Also yum!

Wednesday -grilled chicken breast, artichoke, and mac and cheese

    Thursday-leftover mac and cheese

Friday- not sure. We shall see . . .

  6. Monday: Last day of our Lake membership so we ate pizza at the lake
    Tuesday: Jambalaya
    Wednesday: Bfast burritos
Thursday: Bday for my oldest son. He chose t-bone steaks, mash potatoes, salad. We had pie for dessert.
Friday: I have some leftover chicken meat I have to use so Chicken Pot Pie

  7. My spending last week went higher than expected. I have to improve that this week.
Sunday was a crockpot roast meal, because a crockpot puts much less drain on a generator than a stove does, plus, it's easy.
Monday was the holiday plus our power came back on, so we celebrated with boiled shrimp from a bag in my freezer, corn and homemade vegan cole slaw.
Tuesday we had fajitas using leftover roast, seasoned with homemade seasoning.
Wednesday, we had pasta with veggie packed sauce.
Thursday, we had more roast, and I used saved juices to make gravy, serving it over rice, with corn, bell peppers and tomatoes on the side.
    Tonight is anyone's guess.

  8. Monday we had grilled sausages on the grill with green beans & fried potatoes.
Tuesday was baked almond, pecan crusted chicken breasts with buttered garlic noodles, cherry tomatoes with cucumbers.
Wednesday was leftover chicken on top of huge salads, served with french fries on the side.
Thursday I had a secretaries dinner for work, so hubby & girls had subs at the club.
    Tonight is planned pizza out!

  9. Monday-Baked salmon, mac and cheese, and something else but I forgot.
Tues- Baked pork chops and apples with roasted cabbage. For dessert we had homemade bread pudding.
Wed- Sloppy joes with mixed vegetables on the side. I ate mine without the bun as I am currently sick of buns.
Thursday-Ugh, we ate out. I had an unexpected doctor's visit so it seemed like the best thing to do at the time. Does it count that I had planned bake salmon again with broccoli?
Friday-Unsure, but I am trying to cut back so maybe some kind of salad.

  10. This week was horrible as I was working in the evenings and busy all day so pretty difficult to plan meals. I need to get in the habit to make a few meals that I can pull out of the freezer.

Sunday - out to dinner New Mexican place not very good too so felt like a total waste
Monday - sausage hotdogs on bun with potato salad and cucumber salad
    Tuesday - chipotle for dinner
Wednesday - spicy sausage pasta ( ATK recipe)
Thursday - steak lettuce wraps (WW recipe)
Friday - Ate out again at our favorite Mexican
Saturday - homemade meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans.

Very bad week planning wise. But it was totally unexpected that I would work this week. Luckily I didn't shop much for groceries because it would have gone bad

  11. M--bbq'd chicken drumsticks, salad, corn, green beans
T- baked spaghetti, fruit salad, garlic bread
W- mac and cheese, grilled turkey dogs, applesauce (dh was out of town for work)
    T- Mexican restaurant meal
F- leftovers from all week long
S- oven roasted whole chicken, corn, green beans, applesauce
S- brisket on the grill and whatever else strikes me tomorrow

  12. Monday - we had a variety of leftovers from the weekend
Tuesday -rotisserie chicken with roast potatoes with homemade gravy and edamame on the side
Wednesday - spaghetti with meat balls, veggies
Thursday - my daughter's first day of kindergarten. She chose tacos with all the fixings.
Friday - my two favorite homemade deli salads - Thai peanut pasta salad, turkey Havarti deli salad with grapes and almonds, and smoothies
Saturday - chicken nuggets and leftover deli salads
Sunday- my wonderful mother-in-law brought over a taco Casserole to enjoy during the football game.

A side note, I'm 37 weeks pregnant and last night saw that you had Apple Pfannekuchen. I've been wanting to make one for a while and since my husband was our with friends last night and the kids were asleep, I made one for dessert for myself. I ate the whole thing and then made two more this morning for breakfast (I only ate a half this time). Delicious! Thanks for the tip about making more if you are pregnant. 😉

  13. I would love to know what you're using to stain your deck, as that's a project I need to start this month. The last stain we used was terrible -- it started peeling and flaking almost right away.
