Eight are sanded, primed, painted, and waiting for one final sanding and painting.
Six others are sanded.
And then I just have five more that need to be sanded. Yay!
If all goes well, I think I can get them all sanded, primed, and painted by Friday. At least, that's my goal.

Looks great the white. You obviously have real wood cabinets so that helps. Wish mine were wood so I could do the same. Enjoy.
Yep-except for the side panels and inside shelves, they're real wood.
As a person who has worked to restore many types of cabinets I have found in most cases all that is needed is a good scrubbing, a nice primer and a good paint. Years ago I had to restore a wood grained veneer that had particle board underneath because there where areas that had been destroyed. First I scrubbed them with TSP cleaner, using care in the deteriorated areas. After they dried I floated out the entire door(s) with Bondo (car epoxy resin) then sanded to a smooth finish. Using a tack cloth I removed all dust then primed. Once dry I sanded with a fine grit and painted with epoxy paint. (The person I did this for want epoxy paint because at the time it was one of the hardest paint finishes around). So as long as you know what to do any cabinet can be refinished. 😀

They look great. I am thinking of painting a dumb waiter table I got at a thrift shop. What type of paint do you like on your projects?
Are you going to poly? I didn't poly coat my kitchen cupboards and boy do I regret it. The paint has worn off around the handles and certain food spills from the kids have been really hard to get off without a coat of poly.
Well, I'm using Benjamin Moore Advance paint and according to what I've read, a coat of poly shouldn't be necessary. The paint dries to a hard, slightly glossy finish, sort of like what you'd get if you used poly.
Even so, do a poly coat or two. because white shows EVERYTHING! We redid ours 3 yrs ago and every drip and splatter shows. I need to touch up the paint about once a year because I am constantly wiping down the cabinets, about every other day.
I agree I bought the top quality cupboard paint in white and was told I did not need a poly coat and I seriously regret it. I am going to have to repaint them all over. Frustrating!

You are doing an awesome job! We had a professional come in and do our cabinets because I was too scared to take on the project. We paid $4,000 to have it done, so look at all the $$$ you are saving! Plus you'll have the added joy of knowing you did it yourself.

Ooh, that is good to know! As I've been working on this project, I've kept on wondering if it's really worth it and if I'm really saving myself money. So, a dollar figure helps. I'll keep thinking about $4000 as I sand. =P
omgoodness. KRISTEN! They look seriously, seriously amazing so far 😀 This is one of those projects that I feel like a celebration is necessary after. Think of how much money you saved in simply giving these a facelift, rather than replacing? Or better yet...paying someone else to do them!

Just curious but do you stain things as well? All I seem to see is painting things and didn't know why you painted most things instead of staining them since they are real wood. What a good job you are doing though. Hard work pays off.
I typically don't. Usually I'm working with old furniture, and staining that sort of thing requires removing every trace of the old finish. Painting is more forgiving, in that you just need to rough up the old surface. Plus, I do love the look of painted furniture.
I am looking forward to the final results I love the white and it will look so clean in your kitchen. our hard work is paying off.

I have recently heard of the Rustolium cabinet restoration kit, but haven't used it yet. Have you heard of it and if yes what are your thoughts.
A friend of mine used it, and she said that the finish is wearing off on the heavily used areas. I have no personal experience with it, though.

OMGosh it's looking awesome - the white cabinets will give such a bright 'punch' to your kitchen. We had our cabinets built several years ago and I went with a stain finish that is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, but it does darken things up a bit more than I'm comfortable with. When the time comes I'll definitely paint them white. Can't wait to see the finished product with your cabinets!

We are going to be painting cabinets in the near future, we have an investment property that we are doing work on. The cabinets are wood and just need to be painted, can you tell what kind of paint and primer you used and if you used a brush or roller, your cabinets look awesome so i would like to use the same paint and primer, i know there is not guarantee they will look the same but I can a t least start with good materials!!

I'll do a summary post when I'm all done, but I've been using Zinnser oil-based primer and Benjamin Moore Advance paint, which is latex. I've been using a regular brush, a super small brush, and a mini microfiber roller.
The end is near ... in a good way! 🙂
Looking good, Kristen! We got new kitchen cabinets back in 1994 (honey-coloured oak) and one thing our kitchen guy recommended were backplates for under the handles. And 19 years later I can attest that the only visible wear is on the backplates. They used to be polished brass, and now have blackened areas where the fingernails continually hit (only on the much-used drawers and cabinets).
Wow! That's a lot of hard work! And done so quickly too. What kind of paint are you using, oil-based or water-based? I painted a desk with water-based and it got kind of gunky after awhile.
Beautiful! You will love the change. Our doors had the same shape in them, but ours were BLACK WALNUT wood!!! Built in the 1970's when Mediterranean was the style for everything! Hubby painted them white and they were glorious - thought I'd died and gone to Heaven!!
I read your FAQs and was happy to see your post about not being LDS. I was raised LDS, and was saved and left the LDS church as an adult, 18 years ago. You very succinctly outlined the true gospel and I just wanted to say thanks.
Those are going to look great! Can't wait to see the finished room and read your summary post as we are going to be tackling this in the fall I think. I have always complained about not having enough cabinets but maybe that's not such a bad thing when it comes to painting time? 🙂

This is why I have not done my cabinets yet. Just too many steps. But it will look amazing when it is done!
I have to say, it really does look good in white. Having done my own cabinets myself as well, it really is so much more satisfying than paying to get them done.
Thank you for your desire to let us know about painting furniture projects. I'm getting ready to do a great old old dresser that still had the old wooden rollers on the feet and didn't know how to go about it. I can hardly wait to get started and complete my project.
